I wrote an explanation of what was said in Mandarin and the Chinese character’s meaning. I believe from my understanding of the character’s meaning is that she was reassuring him that their lifetime together fulfilling, that it was good enough. He was worried of leaving so soon, as he was dying, he wished that they had more time, that he valued his health and body more in his youth. And not used his body so much to attain status. I believe that someone else watched a translation in another language it was translated very well.

She doesn’t say oh one life with is is enough I don’t want to be with you again in another life.


She says our life together is enough, we don’t hav to look to another life, this life with you has been good.
he smiles as the rafter she says it. He wouldn’t have smiled at her like that if she said something hurtful.

He probably does love her more romantically. He most likely wouldn’t have lived long if she died first. She loved him but she has always been practical. She is not a romantic who would waste herself away with sorrow. She will live and live well.

This is not the typical “love” story seen in most cdramas. There is no dramatic spinning and looking into each together etc. This drama is very grounded in reality. Sometimes one spouse can see to live the other one more. My aunt even said once a women will have more blessings or be more blessed if her husband loves her more. And I don’t actually think that XLX loves him less she just isn’t the romantic type in saying those romantic things. She doesn’t flirt with him. But she does run to him when she knows that he is back. She takes care of him. She grabs ahold of him when he wants to seek revenge for his friend. She comforts him in his sorrow. And she looked after his family. There are other instances too.
She can however live her life well even after he is gone, but doesn’t mean that she won’t miss him. When she was old I saw her as pretty lonely, her friends were gone.
She probably would’ve loved to see all of them including him in heaven, but she will wait until her life has ended first.

That’s true unfortunately, at least they wont be subject to the whims of the emperor and other people. Maybe they can move away like Ji’er and establish themselves somewhere where no one knows of their background. At least they are free.

I looked this up online because I watched the drama the Royal Feast and below is what happened. This is during the Ming dynasty. In this dramas Zhu Gaochi’s drama counterpart was depicted as the Crown Prince that the ML helped to get back to the capital, the later became emperor. I was also wondering how the FL’s lead opera singing friend was part of the opera trope when she said that she was sent to the Jiaofangsi as a child.

So below it shows good news for the poor women in the Jiaofangsi. So before the institutional custom was abolished it was impossible for these women to escape, to gain their freedom, cause they were considered as outcasts, as this was essentially a sentence for them being there and they couldn’t’ marry out. They were essentially slaves of the government/emperor.

In the Chinese historical drama Royal Feast, the male lead's father (Zhu Gaochi, the Hongxi Emperor) abolished the institutional custom of punishing the families of disgraced officials by enslaving their female relatives into the state-run entertainment and music bureau (Jiaofangsi / 教坊司).
He issued an imperial pardon that officially:
• Abolished the official slavery status of these families, allowing them to return to civilian status.
• Returned their confiscated lands and property.
• Freed the surviving women who had been forced to serve as state courtesans, musicians, and dancers within the palace's music/entertainment bureau

Ahah I used to dread Chinese class growing up. I am making my girls take Mandarin/Chinese class now. If they don’t do anything professionally with it, at least they can communicate in Mandarin read some characters and watch Chinese dramas with subtitles.

Yes! That is a much better translation. 足夠 Does translate to enough, but fulfilling is a much better way to convey it. I believe that she was trying to say that sentiment and he smiled after she said it. So if she didn’t mean that he wouldn’t have smiled at her like that.

Yes I want to add that when she said this life is enough, that their was complete, good enough that she was satisfied and content with it. I had to rewatch it and what she says in Mandarin that was my interruption.
A lot of times in cdramas the characters will say if there is a second life then… let us be together or something.

She was probably trying to convey and reassure him that she was content with this life, it has been good their life together, that he shouldn’t worry or stress about it. Again that is my understanding of what she said in Mandarin and my understand of what those characters meant.

And XLX never strict me as a romantic person, She loves her family, as evident from the 1st episodes when the peace talisman was for her parents and not her future spouse. And from what happened to her Shen family it kind of dispelled any romantic girly thoughts she might have entertained.
She loves her adopted her family and her girl friends. I believe that she owes her children unconditionally along with both sets of her parents. But she might not love her husband that way. And he definitely loves her more than she loves him. He had to earn her love and she did give it to him, she just didn’t express it in the romantic way that we typically see in cdramas. Were they can’t live out without the other. Their kind, or the lose she feels for him, is love born from companionship and struggles, this kind of love is actually most lasting. The ML is more of a romantic he probably saved himself for the prefect person after his disastrous first marriage and he didn’t ant a repeat of his parent’s relationship. So when he feel for her he fell hard. He was probably very lonely , carrying the burden of being the eldest and the Lin family’s wellbeing on this shoulder s. he didn’t have a personal who he can really tell everything to, so he wanted that, found a person he really admired, fell in love with her deeply.

Her love took time, acceptance, companionship, building a family together, to grow. She can live without him and live well but he wouldn’t been able to live for that long if she went first. They both loved each other deeply but came about it in different ways.

It’s amazing that your high school friends’ mother went o mass every morning. Yes the Catholic Church bans artificial birth control but allows natural family planning NFP, which many Catholic couples/women are using now to space out their pregnancies. Saint John Paul explains in the is Theology of the Body why artificial birth control is not allowed. Actually birth control pills can have negative side effects too. The best situation is for a couple to work together regarding their pregnancies, athe NFP could be a good way.

This drama and having watched a lot of dramas previously, I am grateful that I live in this era. Therefore, I was just sharing some thoughts, as I really enjoyed this dream and admired how these women are choosing living well despite the constraints they experience during that era.

The family will stay tougher and not separate because the elder(s) are still alive. After the elder(s) pass then the family’s branches can separate.

I looked it up morbid curiosity I guess. I detest going to the dentist myself especially for X-rays. The dentist can make her ivory, or possibly white jade teeth.

Oh man the third brother’s wife lost all 4 of her front teeth. I don;t know what she will do during that time period. I looked it up the dentistry was pretty advanced but not as advanced as present day. Probably she will have to get dentures. If she tries to implant them again there will be the risk of infection. Man it’s a mess. I don;t like her character cause she is trying to take advantage, but she is going have to cover her mouth all the time. With bad oral hygiene her health will be bad.

I think that she does. His interactions with him are affectionate. She cares for him, and from his long absence in the capital she ran to go see him and went into his arms. SO she does love him.

The episodes ended and she wasn’t done talking to she might mention him who knows.

Yes she has reconciled to who she is now. She is both XLX and SJL. This is one secret that she will never share with anybody. Even her parents dont’ speak the real XLX by name when they were burning paper money. It’s too dangerous. He knows and she knows that he knows that is enough. Who she is now is more than SJL or XLX, her past and new experiences have shaped who she is.
Honestly if the rest of the family knows, like the grandpa who knows what he is will do so save his family from this danger. It’s too much of a risk.

Anyone who knows can hold it against them. Harboring her if people know is a death sentence for his family and her parents.
So it’s better nor to day anything, He loves her regardless, she is who she is in his eyes and heart so it doesn’t matter, who she used to be.

He said that he saw the baby born . The baby was all covered in blood. He couldn’t take it. he probably didn’t realize the pain of childbirth.

Anyways to address the points above about how XLX slapping LJQ could have landed her in a lot of trouble. Yes if the elders all knew about it the next morning she could’ve gotten in trouble by them. But they were in the bridal chambers when that happened not in the actual ceremony. His friends and male family members participated in the antics /make a fuss in the bridal chamber, they probably thought to see the unveiling of The bride, make some jokes and then leave.After she slapped him, LJq ordered his maids to not repeat what happened and gossip about . His mother was told and she didn’t blame XLX for it. IF she slapped him during the bridal ceremony in front of the elders that would’ve been a different story. It was bad enough that she didn’t even want to bow to him to complete the ceremony.
So if the elders knew about the slap they didn’t do anything about it so led me to believe that they didn’t know about it. Other than his friends teasing him about is didn't ruin his reputation nor hers. So sure brides didn’t usually do that but then again men during that time period probably didn’t ask for an imperial edict to marry commoners either. So it is within the realm of possibility that since no one gossiped about it not many ppl knew about the slap.

Yes Madam Lin called Madam Yuan Old sister. This is a term of respect for her, deferring to her seniority.

I looked it up starting from the Han dynasty nobles, the wealthy can have concubines, the number they have depended on their status. Commoners didn’t because they couldn’t afford concubines.

Once Western Europe became Christian, the Church banned the practice of concubines.

Of course there are horrors of men abusing women and forcing them to be concubines, or mistresses. As a Catholic I appreciate the Church banning the practice and upholding the sanctity of marriage. I am Chinese and feel so fortunate that I didn’t live back then. I wouldn’t have survived. Just looking at the situations that these women has to go through in a harem situation I would've died so many times over, or been calculated against.

Well to her credit she is very smart and well trained. From a young age her grandfather educated her in the scholarly ways, her mom educated her in how to be a family matriarch, and her father educated her in the law. If she was a son she could’ve been an official by passing the imperial exams. Instead her career is managing the household and household affairs. She is like a CEO of the back household.
She is also able to read others well and can grasp situations. Also towards the end, Madam Lin said that the 3rd sister manipulated this outcome and not to blame her maneuvering.
Lan Xiang just facilitated all this but this was the outcome that the 3rd sister wanted, for her daughters to have part of the family assets/inheritance.

Other dramas have super smart FL leads too, such as the FL in Blossom. She had a her past life to guide her. Here. Lan Xiang has her childhood upbringing and what she learned in her life as Lan Xiang to guide her.
A s a said in a previous post, she doesn’t get out of all situations with her smarts but her kindness in her past actions allows her to receive help from others. Like how to got out of the brothel.
