Putting aside the fact that Ren Jia Lun stars both dramas, One and Only and Love of Nirvana have a strikingly similar calm before the storm mood, angst, and tragic tale. Ren Jia Lun’s character for both dramas are caught up in political intrigues either through accusations of rebellion, or injustice and revenge.

Romance becomes a variable in their purpose, though it doesn’t make them stray as they are no love fools. To the male lead characters, the female lead characters in both dramas are like flowers or sunshine in their dark world full of spheres, swords, and blood.

Watching these two dramas, you just know that things are definitely going bad. Despite so, the well-written story and characters reel you in, holding a tight grip over you to keep you seated.

If you like romance that takes its time and journeys through separation and reunions, then you’ll find something in common between Pursuit of Jade and My Dearest. The male and female leads in both dramas goes to a series of separation and reunions where they yearn for each other despite the different paths they take. However, it’s not the kind that exhausts you, as it actually makes you feel excited if you’re a fan of slow burn romance.

In addition, although the characters’ personalities are different, the premise and character background of both dramas have some similarities. The male is secretly a smart and powerful warrior while the female lead has strengths of their own. One skilled in martial arts and possesses great strength, while the other is courageous and strong minded. The premise that a peaceful life is suddenly disrupted by war is also a similarity between the two dramas.

Apart from the fact that both dramas are made by the same Director, they have similarities in the characters as well. Directed by Zeng Qing Jie, both dramas have a visually aesthetic cinematography, although I have to admit, Pursuit of Jade leads with its camera works, blocking, lighting, visual effects, symbolism, etc.

In terms if character, both male leads are young Generals while the female leads are independent women who makes money on their own, one butchering pigs, and one doing business. What’s interesting is rhat both female leads can also defend themselves. Chang Yu has amazing martial arts skills, while Dou Zhao can handle bows and arrows.

Both Pursuit of Jade and Back from the Brink starts with a male lead and female lead who were just minding their own business until they finally meet.

A secretly powerful male lead who’s injured. A strong female lead who turns out to be someone crucial and important to them and the story. A love that looms after spending time together, which starts unintentionally.

Cinematography wise, Back from the Brink is far from Pursuit of Jade’s beauty but premise wise, there are some similarities.

The most prominent similarity between these two dramas is the cinematography. The camera angles, framing, blocking, color grading, visual effects, lighting, all so strikingly beautiful and well-done! The details are something to appreciate.

Aside from cinematography, they do have similarities with the mood, although not much. They both also feature strong female leads who has a secret identity.
