2 people falling in love in that time is one thing, but -degrading- the historical movement as only a mere plot device so the two lovebirds can have a “dramatic budding moments” in their relationship is just fucked up.
For example, many authors are romanticizing depression.. depression is portrayed as a plot device so the ML and FL can “bond over it”... sometimes the FL/ML are portrayed as “quirky and different” because they have depression and it attracts the love interest. This is seriously wrong and harmful. Depression is an illness that literally kills people, not a loveboat where the ML and FL can kiss on. The romaticized portrayals of depression downplayed the serious issue into a joke. All because of misleading portrayals.
Because of it, many people are saying “Oh I wish I have depression” without knowing that it’s an illness not some quirky personality trait to attract your love interest... if you put it in Snowdrop’s context many people are going to say “Oh how I wish I live in South Korea during times like in the Snowdrop drama so I can have an oppa to be my knight in shining armour and protect me”. That’s so just fucked up in so many levels.
In snowdrop’s case, I really hope the showrunners can balance all aspects. It all depends on how they choose to write/direct it. One wrong move and they’ll make it seem like romantcize it even though maybe it’s not their initial intention. The problem is the time setting they use is too risky risky... I wished them the best.

It’s not a thing in our history that we’re proud of. Definitely not something we want to see to be portrayed in a wrong “supposedly funny” way / romanticized on TV. It’s really horrible. My parents and many older people I know went through it and I must say those who have never been in the similar situation have no idea how significant and scary it is. So many innocent souls lost so we, the younger generation, can live a better life. So many violence happened that still cause deep traumas for those involved. Everytime I watch a documentary about it I feel so sad. Can’t imagine how someone could make a joke out of it, or romaticize it, for fucking profit. JTBC clarified that the ML is not an NK spy. But on the same clarification, JTBC said Snowdrop will be a dark comedy drama. Knetz cannot accept the fact that such a dark and bloody times of modern korean history will be made into a “comedy” with romance aspects, you may as well call it a “Rom-com”. They compare the drama with the movie “1987 When The Day Comes” which depict the tragedy in a more seriously accurate tone as it should be treated (according to knetz). They argued that if the drama is only going to use the movement as a backdrop for the ML and FL‘s relationship and nothing else, they are romanticizing the lives of people lost while fighting for democracy. Especially given the fact that the people and activists involved in the said 1987 uprising are still alive today.
Note: I’m not really familiar with the uprising but you can compare it with the ongoing protests in Myanmar or the 1998 revolution in Indonesia. Basically it’s about overthrowing a dictatorship goverment and fighting the military/police brutality.
