Thank you for this! Been reading up a lot on different sites to help myself understand. Just want to add the hairstyles…
Yeah I've seen similar hairstyle in Goryeo period dramas. I thought the hair part was okay since the drama is set in the transition period between Goryeo and Joseon, but apparently C-netz are also reaching for it saying that Koreans appropriate their drama, basically saying Koreans have no culture. No wonder Knetz aren't having it.
Thank you for the list Irene. This is much worse than presumed.I am a rank outsider but even I can see how terribly…
The person(s) who came up with the ideas to use Chinese props, Chinese music, and Chinese cultural references in the drama is either an impostor or just totally dumb.
Thank you for the list Irene. This is much worse than presumed.I am a rank outsider but even I can see how terribly…
Right. The production team was probably high on something. Only ONE person spot the mistake and the drama could be saved but are you telling me there are NONE?

Ya I used to be confused with Knetz too but the more I learn about the controversy the more problematic it gets. I can understand why they're mad. If my culture was treated the same way I'd throw hands and sign 1000 petitions if needed. But still they shouldn't use their anger as an excuse to harass the cast members though (and other drama actors and actresses who are unrelated to the case). It makes them look as problematic as the drama itself.
Thanks irene. Do you think this drama could've been saved if they didn't use real historical figures?
Ehhh I changed my mind. I don't think changing the names are enough. They complained about almost everything even the BG music. They need to remodel the whole drama to make it work. I don't understand what the producers were thinking. Are they being sabotaged or something?? hhhh.... some deep consideration here and there and this has the potential to be one of the best drama... what a waste!
Here's a summary of things in this drama that make Knetz angry (This is not my content, I'm just translating it. But I have watched the 2 episodes and can confirm them as true)
For the "I don't understand why Knetz are making a big fuss" people, this is for you.
1. A prince like Prince Chungnyung won't just stand in the corner of the room or even poured drink to a priest. Moreover, the said prince is going to be the very very respected King Sejong The Great 2. Lower-class people (read: non-royals) won't use casual form of speech (Like Marco did with Chungnyung). So in the Korean language there are 2 types of speech: Formal (Used when talking to someone more respectful or an older person) and informal (casual everyday talks with your friend / people your age). You need to use them accordingly. 3. Prince Chungnyung said "My great grandfather was head over heels over a courtesan. His blood also flows in me". A prince won't say things like that. 4. General Choi Young is a nobleman / aristocrat in real life but in this drama he's just a regular person. 5. In history, King Taejong is a king who always protected his people. He even initiated war against the Japanese and criminals to defend his people. But this drama depicted him as a cold-blooded person who massacred his people in blind rage. 6. In history, King Taejong really loved his kids. When one of his kid died he's so devastated he won't eat or sleep properly for weeks but in this drama he locked his son Prince Kangnyeong in a freezer to left him to die. This too is out of the historically documented character. This is not the king that Koreans are familiar with and respect. 7. Some characters are talking with Chinese dialect 8. Characters performing Nong-Ak-Mu which is a dance that the Chinese registered to UNESCO as theirs. 9. Ulju region belonged to Joseon territory. SBS clarified that Ulju is the border between Ming and Joseon. This is false. There's no clear land border at that time because they interacted with ships not by land. 10. The background music used is made using Chinese traditional instruments 11. Prince Yangnyeong used Chinese-styled sword not the usual sword you normally see in Korean historical dramas 12. The shamans performed their ritual not in Korean-style. Korea has their own shamanism tradition. What they did is not it. 13. Hairstyles and outfits that resembled Chinese culture. https://twitter.com/kdramasekki/status/1375199695006363651?s=20 14. Palace interior that doesn't resemble Korean palace design and is too Chinese-influenced which is noticeable with a lot of red colors here and there. 15. The writer's previous unresolved controversy with Mr. Queen.
LOL, although i was hesistant to watch this zombie drama, it did seem promising and potentially good in terms…
There's no way they weren't aware of it unless they're brainless. I believe they thought they could pull a Mr. Queen v.2.0 on JE. I think this over optimism made them unable to think straight about other factors...espescially when you noticed that they have the exact same writer and production company (YG). Mr. Queen and JE are totally different in many things such as the moods, storyline, costumes, characters and literally everything. Of course audiences would've have different reactions. However, they put all that concerns aside and only focused on Mr. Queen's success.... big mistake... They should've take Kingdom as an example instead of Mr. Queen.
In the spirit of fussing about everything and anything under the sun...The Korean film industry is going to loose…
Chinese film industry and the Anime renaissance! What an irony for Knetz.
[EDIT]: I’m not saying that they are wrong for protesting the drama because that’s their culture and not my business. I also didn’t mean that their film industry will go downhill because of this. However, how some of them treat the cast members like trash can be a huge turn off for many Inernational fans.
For those of you who are late to the drama's drama (haha) 1) Koreans are offended because of the heavily Chinese influenced props (such as costumes and foods) used in a Korean historical drama. Even C-netz saw the striking resemblance and they make fun of it. China is claiming Korean cultures (such as kimchi and hanbok) as theirs, so Koreans think that this drama is fueling Chinese people to push the claim even further (said a Korean history professor). 2) Koreans are offended because of the portrayal of the royals in a wrong and disrespectful way. They are written very out of their real life character. For them this is not an AU or a what if story anymore. This is a misleading narrative that gives a bad image on their most respectful historical figures (King Taejong and his sons, especially JDY's character Prince Chungnyung who will grow up to be King Sejong The Great). 3) They made a petition to cancel the drama. So far the petition has been signed by 200.000 people. 4) The royal family association also asked for the drama to be taken down. They are obviously offended at how the drama portrays their ancestors. 5) They initially went on a one week break to edit and reshoot, but the filming location won't give them permission to shoot anymore so they couldn't do that. 6) Brands such as Samsung and LG cut off their contracts and sponsorship until there's none left. They don't want to be associated with the mess. 7) The cancellation is confirmed today 26th of march 2021 8) The only 2 aired episodes of the drama will also be erased from International broadcasting platforms (WeTV and Viki).
In addition * Knetz used this opportunity to bring back the previous MrQ issue since they have the same writer. * As the result , SHS lost brand deals (Chicken Plus deleted her pics and videos from their website's frontpage due to Knetz's protest and backlashes) UPDATE: SHS did not lose the WeMustM mask deal yaaaaayyyyy
Now the drama will also be erased from international broadcasting platforms (wetv and viki) (Source: Sports Donga). It's over guys. There's no way Netflix would agree to air this drama :(( It seems like the situation is really bad in South Korea...
Care to enlighten us why they are suddenly attacking Mr. Queen and dragging its actors into this issue? Was it…
Yeah I don't really get why they drag MRQ just now as well. If they dislike it so much how come did the show ended up being the 7th highest rated kdrama on cable tv.... -_-
Care to enlighten us why they are suddenly attacking Mr. Queen and dragging its actors into this issue? Was it…
It's because SHS's character said "Turns out The annals of the Joseon dynasty is nothing but a mere tabloid." Apparently the annals of the Joseon dynasty book is very important to Korean culture. Its value is probably equal to the Dead Sea Scroll's importance for Israelis and Jews as it records the detailed history of their country. As far as I know they have no issue with Cheoljong being portayed better than he actually was. Cheoljong wasn't an evil king, he's just controlled by the Kims. so the drama's portrayal is not as twisted as JE.
At first when hearing about the controversies over the Chinese food, I too thought that it was an over-reaction.…
I agree! While I'm strongly against Knetz's cyberbullying and cancel culture, they made a right point on the cultural thing. The Jeonju Lee Clan has every right to be offended. Imagine being proud of the fact that you're the descendant of great noble kings only to have them being portrayed in a wrong way ON NATIONAL TV. I too would be enraged if I'm in their position!
I GET THAT THERE WERE DISCREPANCIES AND MISTAKES MADE BUT THEY CANCELLED IT?? WHY COULDN'T THEY HAVE JUST FIXED…
As much as I'd love this to happen instead of cancelling it, they have no funding to do so. At least RWTMR still have sponsorships and ads. All of JE's sponsor and ad deals withdrew their contract because they don't want to be affiliated with it. Even Naju City government (the filming location) don't give permission to use their cultural park anymore so they can't reshoot. It's a fucking mess....
Sadly I don't think anyone wants to be affiliated with the drama in fear they might receive the harsh backlash as well... look what they just did to Hyesun even though she has nothing to do with this drama :((
