The thread of Tang San's past life would not pass censorship because it violates one of the prohibitions in c-ent. This drama just couldn't do it, otherwise it wouldn't have been released. If such a thread appears in a book or anime and then they make a drama out of it, they replace it in some way.
As for Ma Hongjun, I think all is not lost :)

Not everyone is disappointed. Even the author of the book was very pleased. It's just that the drama is very different from the anime and viewers who are very, maybe too attached to the anime can't like the drama. Everything in the drama annoys them because it is different from the anime. This is quite a normal reaction, there is nothing to worry about. The drama has its own charm and I personally had a great time watching it and have watched it several times.

This is the only XZ drama that I have watched once and have no intention of watching a second time. It's not some bad drama, I just don't like sweet romances, especially if FL is this type. But if someone likes light love dramas with a pinch of something more serious, they can have a great time. The actors played exactly to make the drama light and sweet with a pinch of something more serious.

Personally, I understand the negative reviews and I understand the very positive ones. In my current moemnt of life, this drama does not meet my expectations and needs, but if I were around my first love and fantasy of a future husband, this drama would be perfect for me.

Nonetheless, I rate it above average because I started to enjoy it quite a bit from a certain point, although I can't remember from which one.

So a little suggestion, if you are not an anti-fan of the actors or the genre, give this drama a chance and be patient at the beginning. Dr. Gu is sometimes Larry Stu, but in a funny way. There were a few scenes where I really laughed. This is a very good drama when you just want to have fun.

Some time ago while watching a YT channel I like (nothing to do with XZ) I heard a clever phrase that made me laugh a lot. "People argue with 12-year-olds from the other side of the world with a fervor worthy of a better cause." We don't know who our interlocutor is, whether it's a mature person with a load of life experience, whether it's a child filled with idealism and nothing else, or someone in between. Don't watch The Untamed. I understand why viewers rave about it, but really not everyone has the same taste and don't force yourself if you don't like it.

Xiao Zhan is the real deal. In the days before 227, he was like a big brother to his fans. He admonished them to do their homework, to dress warmly, to eat well. He had a quick tongue and was direct, so sometimes he was so outspoken that no other idol would dare to do such a thing. He was hardworking, brave and sincere. He did not pose as an idol. He was his natural self. That's how you'll see him in Our Song. People always felt comfortable around him. His fans are mostly people who are unlikely to be interested in show business and often never pursued an idol, because they don't like artificial smiles, posturing, pretending. Xiao Zhan was just real, natural and sincere.

When 227 happened many people saw how this young man who just wants to work honestly was treated unfairly. They began to take an interest in him and discovered that he was a really nice guy. Not a superstar, an ordinary guy who can make you laugh or move you, who makes mistakes but tries to live a good life.

For me, the handsomeness of XZ is 6.5/10, but I like his acting. It speaks to me. To my heart. He's not always perfect, but his lack of perfection makes his characters natural. I'm not fond of his songs, but his voice usually makes me warm at heart. Just warm and sincere.

227 was incredibly cruel. Artists under less pressure give up and even commit suicide. XZ clenched his teeth and although he was humiliated every day, he did his job. This deserves respect. You can compare him to a character in a movie who is falsely accused and subjected to brutal interrogation, torture to make him confess, and he stubbornly refuses to confess. You begin to like such a steadfast person. You want him to be released and have a happy life. If, after being freed, this person, instead of seeking revenge on the invisible enemy at every turn, tries to prove his worth, you root for this person even more. Why? Because that person is worthy of your respect and support.

For me, China currently has no better actor of the younger generation. XZ is not perfect, but he is making rapid progress. He is better in every role. In the drama Ace Troops, he had some weak scenes, some average scenes, but he also had scenes that were absolutely masterful. So he has talent and he has potential, he just needs to have dramas that allow him to show it all. He has the potential to become an icon. He is different from popular artists.

If you don't understand what people might like about XZ, that's cool. Clearly he doesn't hit your taste. Other actors are good too, but they don't hit everyone's tastes either. This gives us diversity.

I personally recommend Ace Troops but not for the storyline. Just look at how the actors play there. The war and post-war episodes are amazing. The kind of emotion presented by XZ is really hard to see on current TV or cinema.

As for special effects and their quality, I think there are several problems. They all, of course, come down to time and money. Xianxia mainly uses very popular faces, and popularity can disappear overnight, especially if a scandal arises and the whole production can then be thrown out. So producers often want to have a drama on the market as soon as possible and making good septic effects takes time and money. Several companies are hired to do the effects on one drama and they also work on other dramas. So sometimes a scene has to lie and wait until a specialist finishes an earlier job. If someone is in a big hurry, they can hire a faster but inferior company and then we get shoddy special effects.

Douluo Continent is one of the better examples. Some of the effects are so-so, but then the producers got extra funds just ne special effects, they came out really cool.

I too am of the opinion that it is better to wait and have better quality. But some people like the actor/actress so much (I'm talking about in general, not this drama specifically) that the quality of the drama is irrelevant to them, they just want to see their beloved artist.

As for this particular drama, I think it's safe from scandals and because of the cast, it's an opportunity to sell itself to the world, so the creators, including the special effects companies, are trying very hard to make something world-class. You know, such a super c-ent showcase. At least I hope it is.

In my opinion, everything is business as usual. Xiao Zhan has always celebrated his birthday very modestly.
