Thai BL's get higher ratings cuz they have a much larger viewership as a result of enormous promotional budgets.…
Right - product placement in other countries is usually just having the product onscreen, or at the most how James Bond drove a BMW in a film. In Thai and to a lesser extent Filipino BL it's really intrusive. Those f@$%ing gross snacks and sweetened tea in plastic bottles.

I've helped out Wayufilm with some short BLs like Country Boy, and am helping with a FIlipino series that's not out yet. A lower-budget Thai BL costs about $6-9,000 per hour of runtime, but it would be a lot more for something like KinnPorsche. Actors in a typical BL get $300 or so per ep but make a lot more from fanmeets, and I'm sure bigger stars make more.

I might have been in a dark mood that day.

Thanks. Those all discuss the popularity of the genre, but don't really go into how profitable it is. There is mention of Asian distributors spending USD ten million for BL content at a government sponsored event, which means those companies expect at least a few million in profits, but compare that to the billion dollars Amazon spent on Rings of Power (which was about as good as Check Out. And no hot shirtless guys, although Sauron was cute). You can't really compare anything to American entertainment which is on a scale that dwarves everything else.

I've actually paid for a few small BL productions, but out of love for the genre, not an attempt to make money. BTW, the product placements only cover a small amount of the costs - like fifteen percent or so.

the show is pretty good so far actually but the freaking background music is SO ANNOYING my god, this constant…
How about when that guy was calling Mean and they played the same one second of club music everytime the perspective switched to him? It was like they were deliberately trying to be annoying.

This is unwatchably bad. I can't get through ep three - it's so unbelievably boring and incompetently made. Who wants to sit around for an hour watching people messaging each other? And do they not know how to quickly communicate everyone got into college? Do we need to spend an entire episode on that? The sound is terrible, with the music too loud, especially when it's free download crap we've heard a billion times played another billion times, and this is so lazy that when that guy called Mean, every time it switched to him the same chord was played from that club music - it was annoying.

Did nobody look at this script before they filmed it and notice how incredibly dull and pointless it is?

I'll say it: this is worse than Check Out. At least in that hot guys took off their shirts all the time.

Oh, come on. Every BL is just a puzzle of mixed tropes. And the let's wipe him-trope is actually fun. It gives…
I don't mind a few tropes - it's when they're stupid and just thrown in because the writer is creatively bankrupt that it's annoying. Nobody is going to get sick and die if they don't thoroughly dry their hair in a country where it never falls below 40 degrees, and on another show an uke managed to cut himself with a butter knife. I'm 55 and live in Minnesota, and I haven't had a fever in so long I honestly can't remember the last time I did, but 20-year olds with abs of steel get them whenever a drop of rain or a ray of sunlight hits them. Enough.

And you know what the last thing in the world you want when you're really sick? People waking you up to get you wet and force you to eat porridge.

But as I was saying, I get confused about which show I'm watching because they're all the same. I don't get how people find endless repetition entertaining.

I've never been able to find any info at all about how much money BLs make - I have some data on how much they cost to make, and they make more on the fan meets than the series (and that's doubly true for the actors), but I've not seen a sigle figure on profitability.

I think people always downrate series that are short. I'm not sure why - I'd rather watch a short good series…
I get what you're saying. Maybe Don't Say No would be a good example - no plot, and the same formulaic love scene over and over again for no apparent reason. A love scene should only be there if there's a reason for it - to drive the plot, explore the characters, etc. If it's just gratuious (and usually kind of bad), then we can do without it.

Finally, a review I can agree with. The relationship between Akk and Ayan didn't do much for me. I thought Ayan…
I got to the point that I only watched the first 5 seconds of Akk & Ayan scenes because they were entirely predictable after that. It's like BL Name That Tune.

I think, it is Seeiwe personality (don't say Earth). And yes he is a character who is effeminate. So given his…
I mean Earth. It's like directors have a fetish for him crying. What does being effeminate or not have to do with wailing? Are you suggesting that melodramatic crying is a feminine trait?

And no, adults rarely cry like that. When was the last time you wailed like a child? It's not a question of effeminacy, it's a question of maturity. This series has consistently infantilized Eiw, and the equasion of effeminacy and helplessness is altogether sexist, homphobic, and femphobic.

I'm confused. This is about as coherent as Physical Therapy. Who was that woman in the alley, and who is Nine? Have we heard of him before? Never mind, I don't really care.

It's weird, there was a great moment where Bank played loneliness and vulnerability really well - it was lik it was a scene out of a much better series, but then it went off the rails again.

Plot? In Hard Love Mission?? Might be more likely than you think!! 💚I'm only waiting for the "Putter has seen/met/known…
I think this series is creative an innovative. When the uke got a fever, the seme let him pat himself down with a damp towel. That's a lot of agency to give an uke.
On Hard Love Mission Oct 29, 2022
I'm starting to think I should give up on BL. It's gotten to the point that I can't tell the difference between them anymore. "Wait, I think I already watched this - a guy with a fever that needs to be patted with a damp towel. But wasn't he a dentist or something?"

This whole episode was about an average-looking guy getting photos of him taken. There's a villain in it, but we have no way of knowing who it is. It can't be the guy dressed entirely in black on a beach. Is the writing this bad on purpose?

I mean the second couple. I like them and their interaction, but something needs to happen at some point.

For some reason, BL has abandoned the concept of "plot". It's cute to watch cute boys together, but I can't watch 20 series of it - I want a story to invest in.
Usually Mon does most of the heavy lifting, but this is a real Oak vehicle. It was unexpected and amazing to get contexxt and depth for some of the odder moments of the original movie.

I think you have to go into this understanding it's not really a BL - it's an LGBTQ+ film and explores themes of identity. This is not a fluffy romance - it shows a realistic view of teens figuring out who they are and all the heartbreak of being that age, especially if you don't - or can't - fit in.

Anyway, the first half was quite beautiful.

Santa is a powerhouse of an actor - and so hot. That was a great American accent, too.

It's a pity the director stuck them in Standard BL Sex Position because both of them are very comfortable with intimacy scenes and don't need the weird planking the seme always does.

I could happily live with never having to watch Earth cry again - I'm really over it. And his non-crying acting is better IMO - I think his crying is too childlike - adults don't wail like that. But the minute he stopped I was really drawn in.

I enjoyed the episode and their interacting as boyfriends, but I'd like this series to have a plot - after the first 9 episodes of building up to Cake's leaving, I was hoping for more when he got back rather than just picking up where they left off.

Being a BL parent is he most dangerous occupation in the world. The occupation Russian conscript has a lower death rate. Eiw's mother can't be much older than 40-45.

Ok, that 'I love everything about you' scene was perfection! The music, the build-up, the emotion, the way Santa…
I thought it was a pretty good American accent. There are a lot of Thais in California and that was better than average - a Thai accent is usually really strong.
