Bland because there's no BL scenes or... what? Also too much editing? Of what, transition to next scenes? Music? Cinematography? There isn't 'too much' of any of this. You're saying concrete media critic words but...it's almost as if you're throwing them out to conceal your TRUE disappointment of this drama:
Lack of BL. You can dislike it, but even then "shite" is wild! The pacing and plot is solid. The cases are unpredictable. The characters have believable chemistry

Moment ONE: Zhang Ping snatches the paper from Mowen as he's writing and Mowen slams the pen down while calling his name. (I wonder how many shots that took... the paper sliding away was so smooth. GG Song Weilong!
MOMENT TWO: Mowen screaming (你上赶着死我眼都不眨一下!) "I won't blink for your death!" is the translation, and I almost fell out of my seat every time. It's great acting from Mowen don't get me wrong. But it's said with so much honest vitriol that I lose it!
MOMENT THREE: Lan Jue begging Zhang Ping to stop talking while he's holding back Mowen, and then Mowen yanking himself free. The way Lan Jue's eyes got so big and his voice strained (when Mowen shoved him) at the last second made me sort of sad. THE GIRLS ARE FIGHTING. It reminds me of my past when there was a fight at school and someone is trying to calm their friend down, but the other girl keeps digging her grave HAHHAAHHA.
That is all. I can't wait for the next episodes to come out. I miss the interactions between the trio.

I never said every 40+ episodes is draggy lol, as someone who has watched many Cdrama shows OVER 40 episodes where things are done well (example, Nirvana in Fire). As for Rise Of Phoenixes, your comment comes as a surprise as even my friends from the Mainland who loved the show said it was draggy at certain points.
The issue is over-saturation leading to misunderstandings. 40+ dramas became the norm, and then many historical and even modern Cdramas followed suit, leading to an influx of series that kept adding unnecessary plot points to take up time and stretch out the series. The 40+ rule is still weird and stupid, but I think it's an opportunity. I just want Cdramas to follow Kdramas style of short and powerful, without every series being long.
