Kudos for the team in making me so invested in the story that my mind automatically ignores the bad cgi. I didn’t even notice that the same set was used over and over again. lol

I gave my rating to this here in mdl a few hours after watching the last episode but somehow the number of users didn’t go up.

I’ve watched the 32 subbed episodes already so when I watched the advanced episodes last night, it wasn’t that difficult to understand. Plus people on Twitter helped. Also I’ve watched so much cdrama that everything is familiar. lol

Knowledge from the novel + kind people who translates real time on twitter + not skipping scenes + rewatching the already subbed episodes. Plus the plot is simple nothing too overly complicated.
Really if you’ve read the novel or have a general knowledge of it, the first 14/16 episodes are easy to understand. Once you understand the characters and their dynamic after you’ve watched the first 14/16 eps , interpreting their actions in the later unsubbed episodes is not difficult at all.
Benefits of a character-driven story as opposed to one driven by plot.

Wuxia is not entirely devoid of fantasy. It’s just that the fantasy element is mere exaggeration of ‘actual’ skills or real life martial arts. . The flying over rooftops, which is about mastering qinggong -an actual martial art but exaggerated for tv.. So disguising is an actual skill but because of mastery of a certain technique, a person can actually look and sound like another. The skill is passed down from master to student, usually perfected for several years.

While in xianxia, the hero may be able to create fire out of no where coz he’s blessed by the gods or it runs in his blood etc. Xianxia involves gods, demons, ghost, etc.

Is it the long hair? Coz this is ancient china setting where having long hair is the norm. Where different hair styles means something like single, married. If I’m not mistaken having long hair means filial piety. Cutting your means cutting yourself from your family. Though I could absolutely be wrong as my source are cdrams and novels. Lol

Youku do have English sub in some of the movies I found on the app so it’s not impossible to add English sub to their series. Though I wouldn’t mind if they go with yt premium route as I have been foolishly paying for that for no good reason. lol

I really hope youku just add an English setting on their current app coz their app is excellent. Videos load so fast and video quality doesn’t suffer even with a slow internet. Speaking from someone who has wetv, iqiyi, viki, primevideo and netflix.

The series spent their money wisely. Also, the camerawork is excellent. It hides so many faults. Plus the CGI is usually in the background so the audience doesn’t really focus on it. However, if they use CGI and green screen for a whole/long scene, the quality becomes obvious like in the later episodes. But the plot is engaging, the characters both main and side ones are compelling and the pacing excellent so everything else is easy to ignore.

I’m actually glad he is taking more diverse roles this time. Though I don’t think he’s doing much fan service outside of the series but let’s see if they provide some during their variety tv guestings.

Yes. Particularly zzh who just finished filming a cop series and is at present filming a cop/peacekeeping movie. All that softness he had as zzs is just gone. ?
