The ending can be depend on the perspective of how we look at it. Let's say the worst scenario happens. It can be a sad ending in this life, but it can be also a new beginning and hope for the next life.

And based on their convo, they don't really see living in this world and being reincarnated over and over as a pleasant thing. They want both of them to achieved nirvana and their soul become one. The highest level of happiness in their mind can be not a happy ending in this world.

I guess, a sad ending for us can be a happy ending for them.
