if you are struggling to finish an episode and even after 3-4 tries can't finish the epsiode its good indicator…
I have not seen the leads prior to this, but apparently the ML is much loved and the FL gets a lot of hate. In this remake, they're equally awful. For the FL, it may be partly the director's fault since Nodame is a difficult character to play and the remake doesn't understand what her character is like, but the FL's acting is terrible. The ML looks like your average university kid instead of an arrogant musical genius. His portrayal is bland and he has no screen presence. Both have little to no chemistry with each other or with the other actors. The music selection is a mess.
The ML being much nicer is not an improvement - this watered down version misses entirely the point of the character's personal and professional (musical) growth.
If you want a simple romance story, this drama may still cut it. However, the original was an ode to classical music, and charted some wonderful and heartwarming character growth. This remake has none of the elements that made the original so successful.
As a fan of the original one, I'm bitterly disappointed with this remake. • There's no distinct characteristic…
Spot on for all the points. The dialogue is boring and cringey, and the actors have no chemistry, especially the leads. There is no life to the music performances, and the music isn't even synced to the hand movements (some of which are wrong). Some of the characters are downright unpleasant, and no matter how you try to salvage them later on, they still just come across as bitchy or useless.
One of the worst mistakes was using a Bach piece (which Chiaki later plays in Paris) as background music for the face-off between the rival conductors of the A & S orchestras (also, wtf is this face-off? So stupid). So angry that such a wonderful piece of music was mindlessly used as random background music.
They also stuck a character from the Paris arc into the school arc. WTF was that?
Oh no, that's exactly what I feared; that they would leave out the comical aspect completely! Now I'm really hesitant…
There is little to no comedy, they're playing it straight. The characters are watered down (Chiaki especially, to the point where you wonder why he is doing what he's doing, and to what end). The leads have little chemistry, and the other actors look like they don't want to be there, or don't understand what's going on. They butchered Masumi. The drama added love lines and new characters. The music is rather all over the place.
I've just finished watching the first episode and I find it very boring. I'll watch a few more episodes to see…
It's pretty awful. The remake has taken the humour completely out and played it very straight, which makes it really boring. The characterisation is messed up and the music is all over the place. The leads don't have chemistry and their acting is cringey.
China is also remaking quite a few Japanese dramas and films, it's terrible. Usually these remakes end up with tons of filler and the plot and tone are changed so there's not much of the source material left. Ugh.
Thanks for the article, always happy to see J-dramas featured! Ahh, Esumi Makiko, I do miss her but she wasn't really acting much in the last few years before her retirement. She'll always be iconic for Shomuni, but I loved her tons in Love Revolution with Fujiki Naohito, and Over Time with Shiina Kippei and Sorimachi Takashi.
Technically, Nakamura Tomoya is the lead. Koshiba Fuka and Koike Eiko are the main supporting roles - Koike plays the antagonist, so her role is still fairly major.
if he said "kanojo", the word can mean "her/she" or "girlfriend". so it will depend on context. I don't think…
Ahh, okay, I think I remember that bit. Akechi and Ichigo had gone to the restaurant to try the food and suss out the chef, right? So the waiter mistook them for a couple, and told the chef. Akechi probably just let the chef assume what he wanted.
In episode 3, was it the translation/translator or did Akechi Goro call Ichigo his girlfriend?
if he said "kanojo", the word can mean "her/she" or "girlfriend". so it will depend on context. I don't think Akechi thinks of Ichigo as his girlfriend yet, but maybe the circumstances called for him to pretend that she was his girlfriend (sorry, I can't remember what happened in ep 3).
Happy to see a number of Japanese films mentioned, they deserve more attention. Love Letter is such a classic, everyone should watch it, and it is definitely full of feels. The entire segment between the two Itsuki-s is the best. Kanojo wa uso wo aishisugiteru has an excellent OST, and Sato Takeru was lovely as Aki.

Time flies, we're almost at the end~
