On Kareshi wo Loan de Kaimashita Feb 17, 2019
I watched 5 eps of this but I find that I just don't really like any of the characters. And I get slapstick humor, but this is full-out *punching* and... I think they're playing it for comedy but I'm just not finding it funny. Now that I've started Yokohama Ryusei's current drama (HajiKoi), I don't think I'm gonna finish this b/c I don't want to bring my negative feelings for this show over to his character in HajiKoi.

I actually didn't have high expectations for this show-- at first glance it sounded kind of generic and I've learned that when there's that much pink in the show's banner, it's generally not for me. Not to mention, I'd been (reluctantly) watching Yokohama Ryusei's other recent drama, Kareshi wo Loan de Kaimashita, and it had left a very bad taste in my mouth.

Well this show is almost the polar opposite for me-- I've been totally loving it from ep01. In fact, now I'm reluctant to go back & watch the last few eps of Kareshi wo Loan... b/c I don't want my negative feelings for that show & its characters to carry over to Yuri-yuri when I'm watching future eps of HajiKoi, which is the *much* better drama.

This is tagged as "Older Woman/Younger Man" but I don't think it is, actually. I skimmed through it unsubbed and...
...it seems that Hirayama Hiroyuki's character is Rinko's love interest, not Ryusei Ryo. And sure, she's 5 years older than him but when you're 41 & 46, that's not a very significant age gap (not compared to the 21 years between her & RR).

I'm not quite sure why but I feel a pressing need to see this.
...Actually I think I probably know why. A lot of it has to do with Ibushi Kota in those booty shor-- er, I mean, wrestling trunks. You know.

Just in case anyone is confused (as I was initially), there is an episode 00 which is why the ep count only goes up to 12 despite there being 13 eps total.

in ep 10 there where 2 picture on the wall and in between them there was the chair whoo was the guy on the right???…
The 2nd Prince of Legend is Iwata Takanori (actor & member of Sandaime J Soul Brothers & EXILE). Incidentally, the 1st Prince of Legend (on the left) is TAKAHIRO (actor & *also* a member of EXILE).

Imagine being paid $10 each time just to reciprocate when Takato (Suzuki Nobuyuki) flirts with you... sign me up!

Anyway, despite my comment I actually think his little brother Ryu is the best choice b/c he actually likes Kanon for who she really is and doesn't harbor any weird, idealizing misconceptions about her like the other boys.

If I had to guess though I'd say that Kanade is probably endgame just based on stuff like order of introduction, prominence in promotional pics, etc. Though it'd also be kind of cool if she didn't end up with *any* of them, actually. Really turn the story on its head.

I really need Tanai to get his sh*t together, figure out that Runway is not into him, and give Guide his full attention. At this point, his pursuit of Runway feels like a half-hearted routine that's he's stuck in.

I didn't even realize the drama series is a sequel, tbh. I'm really enjoying that, so I'll definitely watch this whenever it's out. Besides the basic premise (Miko seeing ghosts & engaging in the titular "room laundering"), it doesn't seem to really touch on the events of the movie (as described above), so I don't think the drama will spoil anything for the film.

Look, I think we're just going to have to agree to disagree here. You seem more interested in defending the show from and & all criticism, and that's a type of fandom I have zero interest in interacting with. Good Day.

(Also: "calling the writers names"??? Huh?)

"I don't think getting raped was a happy ending for Techno"... Right, that's my point. But the show is clearly presenting it as a so-called "happy ending" *-- the musical cues in that scene are not the ones that were played during the more confrontational/"dark" scenes in the drama (like when Trump would appear), they're the same upbeat score we hear during all the other couples' "cute" scenes.

The fact that *that* relationship isn't the one chosen for a "realistic" ending-- when glossing over the real-life implications of that event is the biggest problem in the entire show-- is where my problem lies. We're asked to hand-wave away a rape in the name of romantic comedy, while insisting on a realistic ending to an admittedly rushed, but not completely untenable, relationship's storyline. It's clear they expected to make another season which would have at least resolved the latter issue, but it doesn't excuse the poor wrap-up of this first (and now only) series. I stand by my assertion that this last ep was a complete mess, stylistically and tonally.

[*I should clarify that by "happy ending" I don't mean all issues have been resolved, etc. I simply mean leaving the characters and their relationship in a positive place, whether it be as established couples or just with the potential for further development, even if we don't get to see it.]

Suddenly expecting a "realistic" ending out of just this *one* couple, when all the rest get their "happy endings" (even the ones that truly don't deserve it, and have relatively little character growth or story build-up to support it) doesn't fit with the tone of their story up to that moment.

Sure it would've been rushed if *everything* had been resolved in that last episode, but imo they shouldn't have even started the TinCan angst if they knew they couldn't finish it in the episodes allowed.

I think they should've just paced it slightly differently and left their story with the kiss at Tin's house, which is a satisfying ending point-- clearly not the end of their story, but not a complete slap in the face to their audience.

Right?! Like it wasn't even foreshadowed in that *very same episode* which is just so sloppy, especially compared to the rest of the show.

All their scenes before their final scene together were everything we'd come to expect from TinCan in the (admittedly rushed) last few eps-- Tin wooing Can; Can finding himself starting to enjoy, even reciprocate, the attention; complete with the usual upbeat musical cues and straight-up encouragement from Pete & Type. And then completely out of left field, an ending that no one expected b/c it doesn't make any sense. Now *Can* is the one suddenly developing trust issues (!!!) and not wanting the burden of a relationship?

I think what it comes down to is that I don't understand why *they* were the couple that had to get the sad ending (in the drama, which I am not accepting b/c it's not canon). It's like we were shown the equivalent of a mostly-cute romantic comedy but out of nowhere they decided to make the last 10 minutes into a crime drama and kill everyone off just to be gritty and "realistic". *eyeroll*

Worse yet, it doesn't even feel like a proper "sad" ending-- all the nerves are left raw & exposed for those 2 characters (and therefore the audience as well). In terms of writing, TinCan's story in the drama ends right at what would be the climax and there is no denouement in which we come to understand how/why this all came about; i.e. This was *clearly* a mid-story lowpoint meant to be resolved in s2. Otherwise what was the point of their whole storyline?! "Hey here are some things that happened to make this already super-guarded character into a shell of a man who will never trust anyone again, have fun!"

Ah... sorry for writing so much. I am just still absolutely seething about what I just watched.

Only almost? :-( call me a baby but I DID cry during his crying scenes and then again during the flashbacks. I'm…
I cried too, but I'm rewatching it with friends so now I'm *obligated* to watch this garbage final episode again, with them this time. I'm legit buying a cake and writing "sorry" on it and bringing it the night we end up watching this sh*t.

Well I finally got a chance to watch the extended final ep with subs and...
...it's still a complete dumpster fire. Just so... utterly tone-deaf in so many ways. It boggles my mind that a show that was so good for a majority of its run went out on this note.

But now I'm really trying to figure out what to rate this. The small handful of shows I've rated "10" were definitely not perfect, but I rated them on a scale of how happy they made me and how satisfying it was to see them unfold. But none of them completely "shat the bed" ( so to speak) at the end quite like this one. I wish I could rate eps. 01-13 and the final ep separately.
