I'm pretty excited for Ghost! I sort of trailed off of Drive around ep.17 (and will still probably return to it some day) but this premise sounds much more initially appealing than Drive ever did to me. *crosses fingers*

Wow it was nice to see that a relative "classic" won for the J-drama category. I was pretty torn but I ultimately chose Zettai Kareshi's "Okaeri" because out of the possible choices it's the one I still listen to most.

Also, though I didn't vote in the K-drama category (because I was only familiar with 2-3 of the choices) I definitely approve of Faith's "Carry On" as the winner. I love that song (and drama).

My favorite family drama is Dare Yori mo Mama wo Aisu. If I had to pick a drama family to be a member of, that'd be the ideal one.

11 nin mo Aru! is 2nd runner-up because it was a thoroughly enjoyable comedy, though I'm not sure I'd actually want to be *in* that family.

I just found out about his passing on July 28, 2015. He was entirely too young. May he rest in peace, and... well, I don't know what else to say right now.

I liked this movie a lot! While it's pretty simple thematically, i.e. What makes us a "person" (my preferred term because whatever Jiro is, he is definitely not biologically "human"),
I was invested enough to care what happened to our titular android. The story keeps moving along (though not rushed), leaving no room for boring spots despite being almost 2 hours long. The action scenes are exciting, which is all I can ask of them (I watch stuff more for plot/characters than SFX or fight choreography). And in the end I am left with the feeling that I hope they make a sequel film because I'd love to see the further story of these characters.

God I love this movie so much. It makes me so damn happy, I think I probably watched it like 4 times the first week I saw it. I even bought the soundtrack on CD, import prices be damned.

I don't know if you noticed but the banner for this article (what viewers see scrolling on the MDL homepage) is of Japanese actors/pop idols. I was a bit confused for a moment ("hey, Nino did a Thai drama?") until I realized the pic was unrelated to the content.

I'm so surprised and quite honestly rather disappointed that no one seems to be subbing this. I really thought that being a Nakama Yukie drama (and a rom-com with a handsome younger man!) it'd be a sure thing. Ah well, maybe someone will tackle it in the future...

So... I plan to watch the Ooku J-drama and I'm wondering, should I bother with this afterwards? I mean, is it…
Thanks for answering my question! I already did watch the drama though and I cried at the end of every damn episode. It was great. The movie is definitely on my To Watch list (which is crazy-long, but someday...)

I just really hope the Itazura na Kiss song doesn't win for J-drama OSTs simply because it was streamed and therefore is the only J-drama on the ballot that many voters are familar with (I'm thinking back to the "Best of 2014" polls and how people would obviously vote the the only 1 or 2 J-dramas they saw). Myself, I refrained from voting in the other categories because I was only familiar with 1 or 2 titles (or none at all in some cases) and I kinda wish everyone would follow suit.

I've seen all but Unubore Deka and I agree, they're all excellent (though it pains me to see shows as recent as 2010 considered "older," but I understand there has to be a cutoff somewhere). I'd add Jikou Keisatsu (Time Limit Police) [2006], Meitantei no Okite [2009], and... you know there are a lot that I was going to add but, like IWGP, they're almost genre-defying. It's one of the things I feel J-dramas are much more successful at compared to K-dramas-- blending comedy into other, sometimes seemingly disparate, genres without it seeming out-of-place or jarring.

Anyway, for more recent shows in the next feature I'm hoping to see the likes of Legal High (OF COURSE), Mahoro Ekimae Bangaichi, 11 nin mo Aru!, and the currently-airing Fuben na Benriya. And I'm really looking forward to seeing what BrightestStar & other users recommend that I may have overlooked!

P.S. Great article! It's a pleasant surprise to see some Japanese-focused content, tbh.

The only time I've not gritted my teeth (if not outright screamed angrily) about amnesia is the J-drama Gift (starring Kimura Takuya) and that's because it's the main story of the show, not an device shoehorned in to add unnecessary angst or a "fix-all" for some plot difficulty. Rather, in Gift the main character starts out the show with amnesia and the series's over-arching story is him recovering his memory. Interestingly, the currently airing J-drama I'm Home, (also starring Kimura Takuya!) has a somewhat similar concept, except instead of being a bike courier he's now a salaryman with a wife and child he doesn't remember.

Other than that, yeah, eff amnesia. Even when I really love a drama (I Hear Your Voice) it makes me roll my eyes. And if I'm borderline on a show (Trot Lovers), that's where we part ways. It's too often used as a lazy plot device and quite honestly I've got no shortage of better shows I'd rather watch.

Ryohei Suzuki's physique was just... AMAZING in the movie Hentai Kamen (don't let the cover/premise scare you, his character is actually a super-sweet guy and even though it sounds like it has potential to be total T&A exploitation movie garbage, 100% of the fanservice is courtesy of him and he is RIPPED-- trust me, watch it with friends who appreciate the male body & a big bottle of wine, it'll be a night to remember). So I'll be interested to see his transformation (and apparently massively bulking-up!) as this character.

Oh my god, I just started watching this last night, kind of on a whim like I'd planned to check it out because I liked Suzuki Kyouka in other dramas (specifically Second Virgin, Legal High, & Risou no Musuko, quite the variety of roles). After the first ep though I couldn't NOT watch the second, and the only thing that stopped me from staying up well past my bedtime is that I had to wait for eps.03 onward to download... I'm actually really excited to watch more of it now though, it's incredibly interesting so far!

imo the bromance was the only worthwhile part of School 2013, they should've just made a short 6-ep series about those two and chucked the rest... Anyway my favorite bromances are Beach Boys, Nobuta wo Produce, Water Boys, Tiger & Dragon, Battery, and quite a few Kamen Rider series but especially Kamen Rider W was off-the-charts in this respect.
