It took me longer than it should have to realize that he played Moon Jae Shin in SungKyunKwan Scandal because he looked sooo different from every other thing I've seen him in.
I kinda wish they had just, I don't know, written the main character as Dae Yeong's lookalike cousin or whatever and left the story from the first series completely out of it. I liked s1 so much that I can't bring myself to watch this, even though if this were a stand-alone story I probably would have. I'm not as good at compartmentalizing my feelings for the first series as some of you are, obviously (that's not meant as a snide comment either-- it'd be nice if I *could* because if s2 is half as charming as the first show it's still probably pretty good).
I think I need to hunt down the Gokusen manga because yeah, I was feelin' that too.
My own personal picks would be Shibasaki Kou & Fukuyaya Masaharu (from Galileo, as chatchalita mentions below), and Takeuchi Yuko & Nishijima Hidetoshi, who were fantastic together in Strawberry Night-- yet another example of a non-romance detective show that nevertheless made me ship its characters HARD.
As for the other pairings mentioned, I'll just say that I wouldn't wish Park Shin Hye on anybody (or Horikita Maki for that matter).
Well, here's the thing: Someone is subbing it (http://doramatique.livejournal.com/ ) but they're closed to new members for the time being, mostly because people can't seem to follow instructions. But I imagine if you just keep checking back they'll eventually reopen membership. Patience!
I've only watched the first eps of Kokoro ga Pokitto ne and Ishitachi no Renai Jijou so far. Quite honestly I thought going in that KgPn would be the one I'd prefer and that InRJ might be too melodramatic/"soap-y" for my taste. Much to my surprise, I just didn't care for KgPn (Mizuhara Kiko's appeal is lost on me so far) but InRJ is the one of this pair that I've decided to keep watching.
Otherwise I'm looking forward to checking out Bijo to Danshi, Algernon ni Hanabata o, Tatakau! Shoten Girl, I'm Home, doS Deka, Yamegoku, Dr. Rintaro, Fuben na Benriya, and one not mentioned here, So no Otoko Ishiki Takai Kei. This is assuming they all get subs of course, which is not guaranteed (but a girl can hope!).
(Also can I just add it's really nice to see some J-drama content on this site. Sometimes it seems more like "MyKdramaList", quite honestly.)
I've seen-- and enjoyed to varying degrees-- all her dramas from Kim Sam Soon to present (as you noted, the earlier ones are difficult if not impossible to find). She's one of a handful of actresses whom I especially like well enough to always at least check out her new projects (so yeah, I'll be waiting for Masked Prosecutor next month).
I liked it but did anyone else feel a bit of deja vu? It felt a bit too much like Rooftop Prince at the end. Han…
Interesting observation! I hated that Rooftop Prince ending so much, but I liked most of the show that preceded it so overall I'd say it was good. As for this drama though-- the heroine was such a flat non-character that I couldn't really get into the romance so the ending which was supposed to be heart-wrenching just left me thinking to myself, "Huh, I guess that happened." And the fact that I loved Han Ji Min in Rooftop Prince tells me that the blame lies solely with this drama's writers and not the poor cast who did their best with what they were given...
You have channeled my thoughts exactly on this drama, except I'd say it could've been cut down even more to like 12 eps. or so.
Han Ji Min was totally wasted in this role-- it could've gone to a lesser, idol du jour -type actress because it sure didn't require much in terms of acting chops. Her expressions ranged from mild amusement to mild concern, sprinkled with a few crying scenes that elicited zero emotion from me because she was barely a character. Her role was just basically watching what happened to Seo Jin/Robin, which is fine if this were a character study but it makes for a poor romance in my book.
And wtf happened with the third personality (Terry)?! All this drama over the merging of Seo Jin and Robin, and yet this other, much darker personality appears once and just goes "poof" when they were done using it as a plot device.
I feel bad for the cast because they're not bad actors-- they just did the best they could with what was obviously a very poor script.
I loved the Strawberry Night specials & TV drama but I just couldn't bring myself to watch the movie because... well I adore Kikuta (Himekawa's right hand man) and got the impression that the movie, while perhaps truer to the characters in the novel, changed certain things and basically don't go where I want them to. I know, I know, it's a lame fangirl reason to avoid a film but I prefer to leave the characters as they are at the end of the J-drama.
Thanks for the viewing suggestions! It's always nice to see some Japanese content on the site, quite honestly...
It all looks good (well, most of it) except as a vegetarian my options are limited. I do remember however being so, so hungry during the entirety of the J-drama Lunch Queen because of the omnipresent omurice. I'd love to try it someday.
I went into this expecting a really basic "War of the Sexes" rom-com and what they actually delivered is 1000x better. This show is utterly fantastic and I'm recommending it to anyone who will listen.
I watched the first ep and all I could think was that I'd rather see them pair up with the other points in the "love square" (i.e. her & her father's young friend, and him & his friend's sister). Did not exactly inspire me to watch more. Never say never, but I think I'll stick to Mondai no Aru Restaurant & Gakkou no Kaidan for current shows this season...
tbh I'm pretty underwhelmed with Hyde, Jekyll, and I. Part of it is definitely due to my current K-drama burnout (I find myself focusing on all the tropes) but in this case a good chunk of it is the lack of character development for the female lead. I liked Han Ji Min A LOT in Rooftop Prince (she had such personality!) but in this it's like zzzzzzz-- she mainly just reacts to Hyun Bin's dual characters, with little-to-no personality of her own. For me, well, if I can't get into the female lead then the romance is just flat, no matter how hot Hyun Bin (and Sung Joon!) is...
Oh my god he was off the hook in Hentai Kamen (2013) ... I mean seriously, even if the premise turns you off give it a chance anyway because in the movie at least the character is actually quite the sweetheart (and lord oh lord that body! the man is NOT shy about showing it off). It's cute ridiculous fun through & through.
Not arguing with any of your picks, but I'm hoping part 2 will feature some Japanese actors because I was seriously expecting to find some of my favorites in here (Fukuyama Masaharu, Abe Hiroshi, Kimura Takuya, Sakai Masato, Nishijima Hidetoshi, Sorimachi Takashi, Kitamura Kazuki, Eguchi Yosuke, okay I'll stop now...).

On the bright side, it was nice to see Nagase Tasuku (Kamen Rider Beast) in a small supporting role.
