Slow burn is cool if there is some explosive skinship at some point - and not the silly "lip to lip touch and camera freeze annoyance" or just the peck on cheek / forehead.

Also when I took a sneak peak - the EXTRAORDINARYLY beautiful cinematography (tones - textures - movement - set design - costumes) looked so lush like a film.. And of course Bai Lu steals the screen soon as she walks into it - the ML falls flat!!!!
No presence (voice - walk - looks - interaction with Bai Lu).. Which would open up our taste buds.. Greedy for the next bite.
So much so that I went back to check if THIS was the ML.. On MDL. Sigh!!

So like you I will desperately cling to the show FOR HER.. And pray that the either the PLOT in enticing enough.. OR the actor puts out gripping acting skills.

WHY does the Emperor Sleep with Xue Shi??
He had a FULL harem of concubines I know ..
But he didnt come across as a horny guy who has a glad eye for the women .. especially a woman he knows is his mom's pawn piece AND and daughter of his 'enemy' who might be a plant (he allowed her to sidle along during court discussions), he also knows she went after XW's girl (he was happy to see XW having a love interest and might settle down in marriage)
Did I miss something in the plot?
Was it because he wanted to control her father ? But he knew she had cut off all links to the family ..

I LOVE Bai Lu too .. So I had also tested out "Only for Love"
I strategised and decided to move away for a while from Period - let SOKP feelz have its full soak in - thus put MJTY on hold after 2 eps .. just as it's heating up, and decided to finish this modern one with Bai Lu first.
It should only increase the taste of MJTY ;-p when I return.
It's also my first Dylan Wang.
Dylan Wang is in EVER NIGHT 2 - I kind of made a face and got bugged at that because I had just finished EVER NIGHT 1 with the inimitable Chen Fei Yu (only he could DO a Ning Que .. you cant separate the actor from the role ;-D ). And even though I was dying to know what happened afterwards I dropped out. Tooooooo MAAAANY cast changes. Ridiculous to do that since so much loyalty was built up and invested in the fantastic cast of EVER NIGHT1.
So this would be a good way to check out Dylan Wang without any comparison with anyone .. He is SO high on the MDL fave actor list I got curious.

Exactly .. it is a serious downer, when your brilliant and super talented actor is 'wasted' in a mediocre script :-( or badly directed drama.
One more scenario is when a SUPER role play by an actor does not live up to his.her promise in a different drama.
One is not sure what happened - he/she was badly directed .. or the actor's skill is limited to that ONE role / type.
Strong / powerful actors can often swing EVEN a LOW GRADE script and carry the show. So it's their talent which turns things around for sure ;-p
Also some actors are VERY discerning about the PD team / scripts they choose .. and so repeatedly come off with flying colours.
