I liked the drama i'm shock the score is so law it was cute !
I agree with you.
Id expect it to have garnered a 8 and some low decimals at the least. I bet it's Novel version would have been a hotseller.
One reason it may not have taken off like a rocket is the lack of chemistry between leads that needed to be an essential ingredient.. The FL seemed to have put "brakes" on the skinship levels in her contract. She literally shuddered and repulsed most of the spontaneous scenes making it all go frigid.
Yup frigid is how the intimate scenes played out. The camera was on eggshells in most such moments.
Compare that to : - Secret - The Smile has Left your Eyes
Not ONE fullblooded electric moment where the screen lights up. A relationship like theirs to work effectively required sincerity.
ππ½ππ½I've left a comment right above also on this failing which I think needed to have been essential part of the structure
I remember watching episode 1, 2 years ago. I never went back. After recently watching Till The End Of The Moon.…
I was in two minds about starting this show, after I read the low - buzz comments in both the Review segment as well at the discussion thread here.
I had come away with such starry eyes after watching TTEOTM... That I went looking for more of Luo Xi dramas.
I however found the Leads chemistry quite lacking - maybe I was biased after watching the sizzle of Luo Xi and Bai Lu in "Love is Sweet" - a romcom.. a show that was so souffle and terrific light watch; and then in TTEOTM.
This is a show that needed some serious skinship and electric vibes to bring in the heart ache to dial up the emo and drama that is to come in the second half and the end game. I didn't sense any "fire" at all.
This is a show that didn't work with stopping at lip touching and cheek peck - cummon they are full blooded adults who are swirling into a maelstorm... The second leads had far more convincing chemistry.. It popped like popcorm off the screen. (Recall the intensity in The Smile has Left your Eyes / Secret) Deep passionate story lines hurling towards the end once the pace picks up NEED some serious chemistry between leads.
She is not stupid, nor reckless. She is very smart, but not street smart, and yes she is a little bit naive and…
I got carried away I guess ;-p And hyperventilated.
I admit, it's just a personal bias, the role as played by Ni Ni stopped working for me post her fleeing from the Qui residence.
It maybe just poor directorial inputs, or her interpretation of it. I found the portrayal increasingly staccato, uneven and even inconsistent with her character as laid out in the initial episodes - I had loved the characterisation.
I am also wondering if the current episode's (post Qui House invasion) uneven pacing has a part to play in this drop in tautness which had gripped and sucked me into the drama.
I agree that Mr Sunshine is an adapted fictional drama but based on real historical events (as is Empress Ki) while TROP is set in a fully fictional world with fictional events, but character portrayal is of 'real humans' in 'realistic' setting, in a historical era which has been pretty well recreated for that period (vis a vis wuxia drama or sci-fi, fantasy settings). So while the two shows maybe Apples and Oranges, I can't agree with characters being apples and oranges :-D
And of course I am happy to agree to differ on this.
I totally agree that strong people aren't always 'wooden', what I probably meant was that "emotion" can be nuanced in facial and body action; as well as placement in a scene in relation to others, or via camera work. I meant taking the easy shortcut of reaching for "teary eye / weeping / tear streaked cheek" shots repeatedly as the only thing on the palette is either a directorial or acting failure because for me it started to get annoying and tiresome,
If it works for viewers it's great, just saying it was detracting for me .. I began to lose connect with otherwise promising leads and storyline.
I hope it all picks up tempo going forward. Am sticking with it with for sure.
One of the commenters actually gave me a tip : to remember that FL is 18 and brash :-D I'll try.
She is not stupid, nor reckless. She is very smart, but not street smart, and yes she is a little bit naive and…
Yes she's been getting on my nerves a lot for the last 6-7episodes!! Given her "supposed" intelligence she's not showing much "frontal cortex" activity .. Besides the minute a director gets FLs to carry "watery eyes" - ready to let go of waterworks .. Strong FL character spines begin to liquefy :-S
Waif like Kim Tae Ri (Mr SunShine) in her teeny frame didn't once give you a sense of the waterworks about to burst or in full flow even!!! AND she came across as SO strong and INTELLIGENT ..
Ni - Ni's role is unevenly played .. inconsistent .. she was great in the beginning and now mostly too "self righteous" to be considered "smart".
anyway I am still holding it in and watching hoping her role and acting prowess evolves!!
I mostly remember her ignoring or blocking him because he flake out on her for a date, or refuse to tell her things,…
;-D LOL
But it's a "saeguk" of CDrama ~ sparky chemistry is as good as it gets .. and if well done .. it's fantastic .. Case in point ~ Empress Ki ~ Mr Sunshine
Does this drama have skinship / kiss scenes between Chen Kun and Ni Ni?
Oh good !! Actually sparky chemistry between leads doesnt require explicit stuff. Case in point Mr Sunshine.
However recently Ive found myself begin to cringe at the fake lip touch and camera freeze holding the shot. Not having such token is far more elegantπ
In the early days of drama watching as a noob to Asian Drama it was all cutesy - now as a veteran often it looks infantile ~ unless the script calls for the quick shy peck
I π― agree with micro replies.
It was my experience also.
How badly this drama needed to have been loaded with passionate chemistry between leads and solid skinship.
I think it would have garnered a 8+ if the relationship had been carved with more throb of life.

OMG. So true.
I totally FFD their segments.
It's the worst and weakest part of the show.
They could have given more Du Lei parts instead.
Am on Ep 18
Truly adorkable...
But I also feel deep empathy and heartache for Du Lei.
It's the first time since Kim Woo Bin in Heirs am I feeling dread and heartache for second male lead
And watched the first episode.
Adorable.
They are both EXCELLENT actors
It's unique!!!
Elegance and style and novelty
Also will give a shout out to "The Red Sleeves" and "Hwang Jin Yi"
And hyperventilated.

No no TROP is not an adaptation of Empress Ki by any stretch of the imagination.
I meant the underwater kiss supposedly in TROP might be a doff the hat at the below water kiss of Life scene in EK.
Saeguk PDs must be aware of all the top rated award winners in the genre
But it's a "saeguk" of CDrama ~ sparky chemistry is as good as it gets .. and if well done .. it's fantastic .. Case in point

So a tribute to the original Period Classic (Saeguk)
Wonder if Mandarin has a special word for their historical setting dramas

Including the MOST FAMOUS underwater Kiss
