I want to start watching it for Li Xian. But not sure yet since it's gonna be long
If you enjoy non-linear characters .. of not just OTP but the entire slew of cast .. enjoy complex plots where there is stuff happening in layers .. witty multiple connotation laden dialogues where you need to listen intently lest you miss something .. where the FL is fiercely independent and drama doesn't use the ML to rescue her from her problems .. where the supporting cast and second leads are STRONG dimensional foils to the arc of the main leads .. you are ALL SET TO SLURP UP THIS DELICATELY CRAFTED DISH LOL
She finally showed her true self in the latter days of their marriage. I think he somehow envies her wanting independence…

I LOVE how well he has been written .. and THANK GOD he's so complex with a myriad conflicts wracking him .. His LOVE and his IDEALS and his Loyalties are a darned sack FULL of holes .. that he barely manages to hold together.

I think he was indifferent to her .. she was only in the periphery of his life .. HOWEVER he has STRONG notions of 'what is proper and improper' societally .. For a bit he actually thought he was being 'proper and righteous' by NOT throwing out his wife (because a decent husband would NOT do something like that to his wife .. plus some genuine concern for her post-divorce plight as a woman in those times for sure).
He likes to think he is kind .. and of course he is . . although a simpleton in his understanding of what constitutes kind .. IMO kindness is more driven by empathy than a selfish desire to look upright to the world -which is what he seems to be focusing on at that point.
Later OF COURSE it confounds him when he learns that she HATES his weakness and his outcasting her from his life .. He's also deeply stricken by being caught in adulterous act .. and wants to recover some the respect he has lost .. by violently trying to subdue her .. How can he accept this wife who he THOUGHT was a snivelling scared obedient wimp be SO STRONG and POWERFUL emotionally and in character .. How can he live down the 'yamen-court' granting of divorce .. SHE ditching him in public .. he who is known as an upright noble of a respectable family.
BUT .. he also has enough reflection ability to recognise how admirable she is .. and I think DOES in some respect 'fall in love' with her .. albeit still selfishly and with a deep need to possess her rather than let her be free.
It's Li Xian's Jiang way though .. to let his 'birds' be free to fly and own the world .. He loves in that way.. I THINK ..

Drama will lose it's spice and flavour.
LOVE FL's characterisation too .. THANK GOD she solves her own problems and fights her own battles and THANK GOD ML hardly ever swoops down to solve it for her .. His respectful distance as well as mildly amused attitude, yet confident in her abilities is delightful to watch.
Love what a court player ML is .. gently creating spaces where those who need to be trapped .. will be trapped .. the symbolism of the hiding fish IS sterling. It's his tongue in cheek engagements with everyone around him .. even his manservant doesn't always catch his meaning LMAO.
And the unique way the SML and SFL are being drawn .. they are AS interesting as the main OTP leads .. A good drama gives SOLIDITY and SUBSTANCE to the characters that prop up the tensions and story and organically grow the rest of the cast by their reactions and actions.
This DRAMA needs repeat watch to unpack ALL its treasure .. I feel like doing that even as we wait for new eps to drop.
The last 2 times I felt like doing that was while watching : ~ The Double ~ Will Love in Spring

I AM SO praying Drama does NOT 'tone' him down - normalise him. He MUST retain his personality till the end .. even as we get to see various facets of him (both pleasant and not so above board) .. he must not become suddenly 'righteous and flat and leached' of the character quirks that makes him who he is.
Drama will lose it's spice and flavour.

My pull towards FP has swung me away from MM significantly 🫣🫣 (I feel so sad that Rui Rui was ditched SO quickly - nooooo. His shine has been scrubbed off 🥺🥺)
While MM turns to enter the flatlands and limp-lake.. FP is climbing up the Rocky Mountains - revealing some exhilarating views and fresh air.

PRODUCTION is the BEST in a LONG time - LLTG came close-ish (with some scenes)
