as for your female in male body complaint, this is fairly common in yaoi of japanese or chinese production as well. that's because most of this is written by women for women an the feminine man, who is usually a bottom as well, is supposed to be a self insert for female audience
honestly they barely even hear about it in school at all. the rape of nanjing is referred to in japanese as "the…
you should see how russians lie about history. They non ironically say russia was never an aggressor in a war, never lost a war and don't even know about ribbentrop-molotov
Japan acknowledges its crimes enough. Most japanese movies are very humble with the subject. Have you seen The Eternal Zero, or Letters From Iwo Jima? Or anime Grave of Fireflies? Just like germans, japanese are humbled by the fact they were defeated and they were bad guys, so they show war in shades of gray.
Meanwhile other countries, such as poland and korea, show far more exaggerated black and white narratives. The portrayal of japanese in korean movies is even worse then portrayal of russians and germans in polish movies. Particularly, I've never seen a polish movie that would justify collaborators. Humanize, yes. But justify and blame another country for it, like in Gyeongseung Creature? Never.
I've also never seen a polish movie that would portray germans as having inferiority complex to poles, or state that everything germany has is thanks to poland. And mind you, perhaps there would be greater basis for that as poland was under partitions for over a century, while korea was occupied by japan for mere 35 years.
It seems like NETFLIX is moving slowly to chinese market to destroy chinese culture by making nonsense videos…
lol so china invented zombies and mutations? Last I see most forms of sci fi and fantasy will be banned in china soon. China can't even have shows about time travel lmao.
I watched only 13 produced in 2023(14 now). My favorite genres are thriller, mystery, drama and this year felt a bit lacking in that regard. The glory part 2 was disappointing, but shadow detective had nice second season. But it's not on the list. I'm also surprised A Time Called You isn't on the list either, that was a nice one. 2023 is the year when I started branching more into j-dramas and c-dramas and I see myself continuing that trend, tho k-dramas still dominate my watchtime. In 2024 I plan to watch more historical dramas.
yeah but that's to be expected. every single k-drama in that time period is like "ree japanese bad they are nothing…
If you say it's nothing wrong with that, why do you take an issue with me being a so-called japan apologist? They can keep hating, and I can keep judging them for that.
Besides, it's not even that portrayal of human experimentation that is bad about this drama. If you think that's my issue, think again. What is my issue is that every single japanese person is a cartoonishly abusive bastard who is just looking for a chance to abuse "joseon pigs" as they repeat over and over again, except for few japanese characters who apologize and prostate themselves before koreans.
There is no moral ambiguity, either they apologize or they are evil incarnate, twirling literal moustaches and making ugly faces like some saturday morning cartoon villains. Meanwhile, all the koreans are portrayed as literal saints, even the ones who rat out their comrades and betray their own ("they wouldn't have done it if not for japanese occupation!").
The entire dialog between kato and FL right before he wanted to feed her to the monster in one of the final episodes is just fourth wall breaking bullshit, it is clearly aimed at the audience and states that all joseon people are fearless and japanese have inferiority complex to them. One of the final scenes where the monster saves ML and FL involves torii gate collapsing as japanese are defeated and other such ridiculous, blatant symbolism.
Makes me wanna vomit. Reminds me how nationalists in my country (Poland) are portraying germany in movies, which is why I usually don't watch war movies made in my country. However, even polish movies about germany aren't this ridiculous. Not even my country does shit such as excusing collaborators and blaming Germany for it.
yeah but that's to be expected. every single k-drama in that time period is like "ree japanese bad they are nothing…
you know who else never apologized? UK to ireland. Not only that, britain keeps occupying northen ireland to this day. Should irish therefore hate all british people and paint them as the devil in every historical movie? Should they say that britian would be nothing without them and teach hate to future generations?
No, ain't no one have time for that. Last hostilities between ireland and uk (IRA terrororist activities) ceased merely less then 30 years ago, which didn't stop ireland and uk from both joining eu and nato. Koreans and other nations should watch and learn.
yeah but that's to be expected. every single k-drama in that time period is like "ree japanese bad they are nothing…
in europe, we forgave and got over. yet there are still toxic nationalists who want to destroy our unity from within for hollow reasons related to ww2 and thousands of years of history preceding it. if we could do it, so can koreans. fighting!
or they can stay hateful, play victim and cry. keep producing propaganda pieces aimed at japan, and paint japanese as literal devil. who does it favor? Last I looked at the map, it's south korea who is directly threatened by their communist brothers and china. Actually, funny thing about communists is that their main enemy is usa. Little children in north korea are taught about warcrimes commited by americans on their soil during korean war, warcrimes that south koreans don't know or remember.
Looks like national memory can therefore be easily manipulated with a bit of good (or bad) will and propaganda. After all, there is almost no one still alive who remembers 1950's or ww2. Thus people like holocaust deniers can exist.
So why not put this human ability to alter their memory to something good instead? Why should future generations carry guilt of something their ancestors may or may not have done? If instead they can, and perhaps should, focus on the here and now?
yeah but that's to be expected. every single k-drama in that time period is like "ree japanese bad they are nothing…
I know, but I also think it's time to let go of hate based on historical reasons. Especially now that both korea and japan are democratic and threatened by communist china. Thus I find such exaggerations meant to engender hatred based on historical reasons really jarring.
this review is too harsh from pov. i think this season is just for plot building and stuff for season 2. but yeah…
you are right, perhaps I did rate it a bit too harshly. I was mostly influenced by what a slog the final couple of episodes were (after all humans tend to remember the end more then the beginning) and how many reviews are praising it as best thing ever 10/10. I wanted to provide some counter balance.
Three points that I love about this drama: acting, action and Japanese conversations.I highly, greatly appreciate…
that's certainly a very positive way to look at it. I agree that a lot of shows and movies don't make that effort. American cinema is especially guilty of it, certainly you're familiar with russians talking with "russian accent" in otherwise fluent english? fortunately, nowadays it's less and less so

Tho, I never quite liked rom coms when I was half my age, either.
but why does she have eyebrows, didn't ladies of Heian period tend to pluck their eyebrows and then draw fake ones?
