I took the bait, I give it 8.
I know a lot of people loved this one, but it fell flat for me after the first third. They could have done so much more with Rongcheng. The collapsed mall plot felt distracting. I know that was the major point of the show, but I just had no patience for it. The side characters (except Pei) felt flat to me. I think the show runners tried too hard to be different, without actually fully executing that.
Things that worked well:
- the music ⭐
- the chemistry between the leads (arguably, they both have tremendous chemistry with anyone they star with lol)
- the IDEA of the VR game... they just did not maximize the potential
Things that were frustrating:
- XZY's mom
- Hu Xiu's dad getting hit by a car subplot
- The plot with Zhao Yan's husband... felt so unnecessary to go through all that just to make her single so that XZY's friend and she could be a second couple. Bunch of fluff.
Sorry, guys. This one was better than some moderns, but it did not impress me. I would give it a 7.0 but I think the cast performed well (as best as they could with this script).
