See, I dont know about the novel because this is my first time even hearing about it. However, from my outside…
you are ignorant - this has been explained a million times that the bl element was between the two high schoolers and not the gangster. try harder tho homophobe.
I usually enjoy bromances. Even then, I can't condone the production company's decision to censor a gay story…
I am personally not a fan of bromance (all though I am not opposed to it) but do understand why production company's in say China have to resort to portraying bromance instead of gay/queer romance since it is illegal for them to do so. But in a country such as South Korea where it is not illegal to do so and they do not have to forcibly censor works it is unacceptable. Especially if the original work was explicitly gay or queer as it is in this case. Yes, the toxicity is insane but not unexpected, I do believe many of these people being so vocal in their support of this drama in the comments here and on other platforms are only doing so with such vigor because they hate gay people. Not all of them of course (some are also just hardcore fans of the actors), but as evidenced by how a number of them word things I think it is a good chunk. Of course, no problem and thank you for reading.
I will probably stop commenting on this soon but I want to explain a little bit more on why the removal of the BL element in this drama is problematic and why BL fans or queer people should not support this.
1. The removal of the BL and queer elements in this drama from the original novel is unacceptable. Not only is the BL element removed but other queer related issues such as the ML getting bullied because of his sexuality, homophobia, and suicide because of said anti-gay bullying. The production company has completely washed this aspect from the work because they are worried this will make the viewers "uncomfortable" or put them off. This type of thinking is why LGBT people are discriminated against around the world have been for centuries. So no, this type of reasoning should NOT be accepted by queer people or their allies. We are worthy of dignity and respect. We are worthy of being seen and being heard. Our stories are worthy of being told and being told with sincerity. I do not care if it makes people uncomfortable, the production company should have chosen another novel or webtoon to adapt instead of this one if this was a concern for them. This is likely the ONLY adaption this novel will ever have and it has been ruined and stripped of such core and important elements to not "offend" straight people, screw that.
2. People pretend not to understand this, but they actually do. They just hate gay people so they act obtuse. If this was a novel that dealt with racism or xenophobia and it was stripped of those aspects and the character's and themes were changed or removed to not make people "uncomfortable" these people would be outraged (and rightly so), but because it is gay people they do not care. Yes, we have a right to be upset and no it is not unwarranted.
3. It is disheartening especially in an age when there is more queer content available then ever to see this regression occur. People were so excited when this was announced to then hear they would remove the bl and queer aspects much to their disappointment. It is a reminder to especially gay and queer people that we are not fully respected nor accepted. It is a reminder that in places like south korea LGBT people are still regarded as a social pariah not worthy of being understood or heard. So yes, it is upsetting to be reminded of this reality in any form, which is what this production company did by refusing to give this queer bl story an honest and respectable portrayal. But in some ways it is a good reminder that there is still a long way to go and that there are bigger issues the queer community faces and that there are still people fighting for acceptance. Yes, it may be just a drama but LGBT people should fight homophobia on all fronts no matter how big or small.
If you consider yourself LGBT or an ally to the LGBT community (and as a BL fan you should) please do not encourage nor support this blatantly homophobic and anti gay drama. Thank you.
I'm a BL fan so I was disappointed with the removal of the gay elements, but the "boycott" doesn't make sense.…
Doesn't matter, if you claim to be a BL fan or an ally of the queer community YOU should not watch and support this. I don't expect the homophobes to understand nor do I expect hetero's who are indifferent to the queer community to get it, but you and other BL fans should. Also boycotts work if enough people are on board. Your demoralization is not helpful.
false equivalency and also not true (hello holland!) but anyway making dumb irrelevant excuses for whitewashing originally gay material is not a good look.
the homophones who watch this I at least understand but the supposed “bl fans” who are supporting this blantanlty anti gay drama whose producers scrubbed all the gay/queer/bl elements from the drama is beyond me. You people are def no ally to the gay/queer community and should be ashamed of yourselves. whatever enjoy this trash.
tbh I won't watch but it's better that way do we really want a 30 years age gap between a teen and a dude who…
it’s been thoroughly explained in the comments below that the romance is between the two teenagers and not the older gangster and yet you and others keep saying this nonsense. stop excusing this blantant anti gay censorship.
Interesting beginning, draggy middle, and lackluster end. Horror elements could have been expanded on and the “mystery/mysteries” could have also been better executed. Not a horrible drama but quite convoluted and incoherent at times. If you enjoy darker content tho it will def give you that!
