I think both you and @nathsketch are correct in your POVs. I feel that Tang Qi was totally misunderstood by Su Cheng Cheng when he said, "so ugly". He didn't actually mean she is ugly but he's bad in articulating how he feels at that moment. To me, I think he meant to say, the make-up is bad (it's running all over her face) because it is not the type he is trying to sell. That's why he is so hard working in researching and inventing better make-up.
