Guess you guys are right. I have not read the novel, and as of now, I haven't felt he loves her romantically. I just feel he's treating her like a little sister of sort, that's why he touches her with no second thought and she lets him. In those days, even a male doctor treating a female patient had to go thru a kerchief of sort, no skin to skin.
