cao danshu is just incredible...i have yet to believe anyone deserves her devotion or even admiration. she's so…
Absolutely! I love her character too! Compared with the other similar drama, The Story of Minglan, Cao Danshu is strong and powerful, whereas Minglan is meek and powerless (for most parts). So this drama gives a totally different feeling as far as female character is concerned. I love strong female characters. I always pull my heart out if a female character is weak and helpless.

I wouldn't think so too. I think the synopsis may have put the emphasis on the wrong characters. The characters to watch for of course remain on the Emperor and the Empress, both very lovable characters.

This is a long drama, 55 episodes. 12 episodes in, the princess has just been born and the little eunuch has just been recruited to the palace. We still haven't seen anything yet. So, hold tight!

In the old days, in-marriages were popular.

The summary is actually horrid, I would honestly just ignore it. You can see already in episode 9 when they first…
There are some political conflicts between the factions for sure, but nothing like Royal Nirvana. The conflicts here are basically some trivial matters, like what the Dowager Empress could wear, if the concubines' statuses could be raised, who should be the Empress (the ministers choose his Empress) etc (at least for now). The party that loses the argument tends to be punished by demotion and sent to some obscure places for posts, then called to return to court after some years. So far, there's nothing deadly as in Royal Nirvana. The whole show doesn't make you feel as if you're sitting on a needle rug. In fact it's very interesting (at least for me) if you like more authentic Chinese history and enjoy watching how these people speak - very poetically and use a lot of analogies in their conversations.

Is it worth watching?Based on the synopsis...It seems the emporor is merciful and benevolent and attempted to…
12 episodes in, I would say, yes, worth watching. It's a rare drama that has a lot of depth.

You may find this one good to follow. Not much physical actions, but everything comes from words and hints within words. Need to pay extra attention to everything said. No fast forward for sure. I find it so intriguing because of the way they speak, so poetically and uses of symbolism to indirectly hinting at things.

I hate nasty empresses and harem women scheming against each other too, but there's none here. The Empress is intelligent and kind. So is the Emperor. In fact, this is a drama with a lot of depth. Great watch!

What i dont get is, At first it was a strong female lead, and then, i waited and waited, but we couldnt see her…
You have a point there. She fizzles out, and at the end, she's like a pussy cat. Meow!

It's not drama of the year, but it's not too bad. Watchable.
I'm more into historical, so here goes (in no particular order):
- Joy of Life
- Nirvana in Fire
- The Untamed
- Eternal Love
- Goodbye My Princess
There are more if you want. Enjoy!

I really liked The story of Minglan but I'm still hesitating to begin this one because of the comments right below…
If you like Minglan, you should like this one too.

Hey nice response! Just wanted to add tho: the reference 官家 to address the emperor was, during the Song dynasty,…
Talking about the term 官家, can you please enlighten me? I notice some wives of the ministers/officials also address their husbands 官家. Why is it so? I also notice they only occasionally address the Emperor as 陛下, but mainly use the term 官家. Historical dramas from other eras consistently address the emperor as 陛下only. Did the change come about during the Song era? Did they continue the practice (addressing the Emperor as 官家) after the Song Dynasty?

Two more comments on men's costumes in this show.1. The cuts are almost uniformly too slim. Too many costume designers/tailors…
Wonderful details that I've totally overlooked. Yes, indeed, Wang Kai would have looked so much nicer in the fuller gown as worn by Chu Junchen, as Wang Kai is so slim and his current gown makes him look "flat" (扁).

As for a Western president not wearing a suit, you're absolutely right; Obama was criticized for not wearing one in the WH during some meeting (something like that).

These discussions are absolutely stunning and so enlightening. Thank you so much!

Watched ep1-7. A few comments:1. The editing was a bit choppy. A lot of scenes were cut right after the last line…
What a wonderful write-up here. Absolutely love it! You have very deep understanding of the Chinese culture especially during that era. and have wonderful discerning eyes. Please post more articles like this and help us understand this drama better. I really love the sophistication in the Chinese culture which happened even more than 1,000 years ago. Amazing!
