23 to 30 was about the same age gap in the Japanese version but the actor playing the supposed 30 year old looked about five years older and the actor they cast to play the younger guy looked 17. It was incredibly uncomfortable to watch.
This series is such a dark, twisted, beautiful trainwreck. Hira and Kiyoi are like two broken puzzle pieces who only fit each other. You can't call it healthy but you also can't look away. I wouldn't label it toxic though. Hira and Kiyoi are both exactly where they want to be and getting exactly what they want from the relationship. I think the drama does a great job of lulling you into thinking it's a typical bully romance but the POV switch is like someone flipping over a table and upending all of your assumptions and expectations. It's so incredibly uncomfortable and unsettling to watch but I can't stop thinking about them either.
I do find the reactions to this drama extremely funny, people are freaked out which is reasonable honestly but a lot of people are also missing the point of two fucked up people being fucked up together and somehow the whole mess is something poetic and beautiful.
People keep talking about this being a manga adaptation so I read a few chapters and wow, all I have to say is both the Thai and Japanese drama versions improved on the original story a lot. I really dislike Adachi in the manga. I've had problems with New's portrayal but now I'm wondering if it's because he's trying to stick close to the manga character who is not appealing at all. Credit to the writers of the Japanese version and to Akaso Eiji for making that character adorable and sweet.

I've watched every drama version of HYD and my faves are the og Taiwan 2001 (Jerry Yan was so good as Daoming Si) and F4 Thailand which blew up and subverted all the tropes.
Also, it's perfectly legit for people to compare adaptations of the same source material. I've seen at least 8 adaptations of Jane Eyre as well. It's fun to compare what's been done better by who.

Comedy shows that are adapted from mangas tend to have that acting style. I saw a manga adaptation recently that wasn't a BL starring the actor who played Kurosawa in Cherry Magic and he played it very over the top. But Old Fashion Cupcake, which is a BL manga adaptation, keeps things relatively low key so it depends on the production.
It's very pretty but lifeless, there's no real plot or conflict and it's an extremely idealized view of this community. I'm with Sumire's father, I wouldn't want my minor daughter doing this either. There's no way she wouldn't be sexually harassed by the clients. I've been treating it as very pretty wallpaper as I do other things. The dishes do look amazing though and I can actually find a lot of them at local restaurants so I'm going to go out and eat the drama.
I haven't finished this drama yet but it deserves a much higher rating. the women are interestingly complex and the actors are all strong. I like the journey that the male lead is taking and how his view of the women around him changes. ETA: completed, really enjoyed it, still think this deserves a much higher rating. I think the ambiguous ending probably had a lot to do with why this drama isn't more popular but I thought it was appropriate for the story.

The Thai version of Hana Yori Dango is the best. Really, truly. They took the story, localized it to Thailand and turned it into a critique of toxic capitalism and violence. If you haven't seen it you should.

They used the same third party broker to handle the rights as they did for F4 Thailand so they had no reason to think that the company would screw up the deal. There's going to be plenty of lawsuits coming out of this.
