Frankly speaking (as someone who supports DW) he is relatively new to acting and is visibly unsure of what expressions to make in the big emotional scenes and a bit awkward sometimes unlike say, Zhang Wanyi. The editing isn't great but there are many times in the earlier scenes where he is kinda blankfaced as a default like when he sees dead Xiaoyao hanging in the air and you want more expressiveness? Dengwei's previous dramas like TTEOTM and Meet the Dragon all had the blankfaced issue so he is really still improving.

I personally think he needs to pick roles that are likeable villains or bad boys to stand out more and give his acting more pizzazz, because if he picks standard ML roles he will be criticised as bland and unanimated. He is good at intimate emo closeup scenes like kiss or crying scenes (he is a decent crier) and doesn't suit playing bland good guys (Xiaolin was overlooked in TTEOTM) or animated expressive MLs like Dylan Wang. In a way he reminds me of Gongjun? Like they have the same "issues" in acting and can be awkward but their visuals hardcarry. Dengwei also curiously looks like a mixed badboy version of Liu Xueyi (very good actor, great clear voice, Yangzi's rumored bf) and Xiaozhan who are both better actors so he needs to find his niche since competition is very heavy in C-ent and good scripts and directors will prefer to cast better options.

Idol drama actors are not really nominated for serious drama awards like the Flying Apsaras, Golden Eagle, Magnolia Awards. Why cant people like you see that Xiangliu himself didn't want to be with Xiaoyao because his army comes first? Xiangliu's biggest problem is that he never expressed his love. It's the same in the book. Blame the character's reticence if you want. Also in the show he tells Xiaoyao to drop everything and leave with him, she says "If you drop everything sure" and he smiles and doesn't agree. What justice do you want? A bad ending for Xiaoyao where she dies with Xiangliu?

Xiangliu's love for Xiaoyao was GREAT but he NEVER expressed it and push XY away to let her misunderstand him time and again because he knew he couldn't give her a home or happy ending. In the drama they even showed Xiangliu had more boundaries (I don't like this! He fed her blood from his tongue in the book😭) and respected Xiaoyao more because he was a demon and didn't want to force Xiaoyao to like him after she becomes female.

IMO Xiangliu saves Xiaoyao not out of love but because Xiaoyao's blood saved him many times, he is a demon and beast but he respects the concept of reciprocity and brotherhood.

Xiangliu also knew that Xiaoyao loved Jing most because her heart ached when Jing was injured or in a coma, and he felt it due to the voodoo bug. That's why he helps YaoJing be together. Letting the one he loves be with who she loves most is very bighearted of Xiangliu and shows him as the most humane character more than CangXuan. That's the point, the demon is most humane.

This is the problem in a lot of Tong Hua novels, her novels love to "abuse" the FL by putting them through torture and heartbreak for drama when it's clear she was living her best life as a carefree single doctor . She is a romance author that has oldtimey sensibilities like Chiung Yao and a lot of women are into that kind of dramatic trope.
