I think the thing with this being 36 episodes though is that they couldn't introduce so many characters. other dramas like The Untamed have 50 episodes and a Heck of a lot more characters (so many that I struggled to keep them straight lol). This drama is relatively simple in comparison

That's the entire point. Historical China did not allow women to enlist in the army so the only way she could was to disguise as a man. Same thing as Mulan. They could only reveal themselves to be women and fight for women's rights when they won. Later FL in this drama also fights in her own female identity.
