It's because the majority of asian drama viewers are women and women tend to be way more critical of other women than they are of men without even realizing it. It's really unfortunate that some amazingly well written, realistic, flawed female characters get so much hate due to this.
I feel like a lot of material was cut. The drama had a good story, characters. and foundation, but so many things were rushed or not shown that the only conclusion I have is that it must have had to reduce the amount of episodes. It's one of the few c dramas I think was too short.
On a side note: I want a Chen Mo/Hua Hua drama. Adorable idiots in love.
Okay so I did enjoy this drama and I liked the female lead...BUT she is always fidgeting! I didn't pay any mind to it for the first ten or so episodes but when I noticed it, it was like that episode of How I Met Your Mother with the glass shattering. I couldn't un-see it. She was always touching her mouth, nose, hair, or doing something else with her hands. It bothered the hell out of me lol.

I went to recommend something and then I looked at your list and realized you've seen most of the great ones! Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace and Queen for Seven Days are both really good (nowhere near Ming Lan level though lol) historical dramas I don't think you've seen yet.
The only drama I've seen that actually somewhat reminded me of Ming Lan was Battle of Changsha. It's set during the Republican era in China so it's totally different in that aspect, but it has the large family dynamic, great writing, and high production quality that comes with being a Daylight drama like Ming Lan is.

Zheng Ye Cheng's a really great actor. I think he won't disappoint.
I don't think he really showed his range in that one. He did way better in An Oriental Odyssey and Royal Nirvana imo. I'm also just not a fan of repeat pairings, so I'm glad it's not Li Hong Yi. But everyone is entitled to their different opinions. :)
Does the romance ever pick up and how is it? I'm 7 episodes in there's been virtually nothing other than the FL gazing at him and the ML clutching that pouch she made. I wouldn't care about the romance being subtle if the story were better, but it's just not interesting to me.

You do realize you gave Search:WWW a 10 when the age gap in that show is 13 years, the same as the one in this show. You also gave a bunch of similar dramas high scores when they all have large age gaps as well. You seem to only think it's disgusting and creepy when the man is older.
It's a chinese drama. I think the kissing scenes are more frequent and explicit than most other c-dramas I watched.
Everyone always raves about the kisses in TEL and when I watched it, the kisses were just as mediocre as in every other c drama. Sure there are more of them, but the passion is still lacking.
