When I look away from the forced hints of romance that don't fit here at all, I wonder if everything is okay with the sci-fi genre itself in this drama. If we remove the crime from the detective story, it will fall apart, if we remove the love from the romance, it will also stop working, but if you remove all the sci-fi elements from this drama, it will remain almost untouched. From this point of view, it is an action series disguised as sci-fi. The protagonist has not protected his mother, so he tries to track down her killer and protect the woman with her face. This could easily be a gangster movie. The creators told us that the story would be about time travel, so they armed the antagonists with effective weapons, then added an alternative world so that YTY would not be the mother of the hero and so that the plot would be spiced up by occasional murder. I don't see more reasons for science fiction. The science fiction genre is always based on the strictly set rules of the created world, and once these rules are given, they are not subject to the author's will, but he must follow them. I wouldn't be surprised if the people from Alice started waving with their wands and saying spells in the next episode. People from the future go to our world to kill, but there is no indication that the authors are trying to make any statement about the future person. All characters are one-dimensional and the creators do not try to touch on any social or ethical issues about time travel and crimes in another universe. It's just an action drama quite similar to Vagabond.
Religion, Before Judaism, Christianity, Islam and so on. Incest was actually common in some ancient cultures.…
Your question is very complex and I'm not sure if I can answer it, I know the origin of taboo rather than their development, because it involves many more variables. One thing is for sure, there are three types of incest - the first type is the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren, parents and children and between siblings. The second is the relationship between parallel cousins (with same surname) and the third type is the relationship between more distant relatives, aunt and nephew, uncle and niece, and between cousins (with different surname). The first type is always criminal and socially unacceptable for minors (in some countries in Europe, South America, Asia), on other hand it is acceptable, if both lovers are adults and agree with the relationship, then society and the law accepts their relationship. We owe this to the human rights movement. Crime is an act that harms others or society; in this aspect, voluntary incest has been too severely punished. The second type, the incest of cousins of the same surname was forbidden in most cultures. This is due to the difference between the lineage and the family, the members of the lineage have the same name and if the daughter marries, she becomes a member of another lineage, even though she still belongs to the original family. The priority is for the lineage to grow, these marriages were not practical. Now this type of relationship is legal in many countries. The third type has been allowed and often implemented in almost every culture in the past, even some cultures required these relationships (if a husband dies, his brother must marry sister-in-law). The most popular was the marriage between cousins (with different surnames), in the history of E. A. Poe, Albert Einstein, but also Charles Darvin married a cousin. It was not until the 19th and 20th centuries, when the Eugenics wanted to breed perfect, healthy people, did it become apparent that these marriages could be biologically problematic. Therefore, they were banned in Europe and America, the ban was spread with the help of the church. People have always respected the church's decision, and soon began to condemn this type of incest between cousins, even though it is legally permitted in some countries today. In reality, this type of relationship is banned only in few countries, for example in China, South Korea and some US states. In the case of more distant relatives, marriages are allowed almost everywhere. As a result, I would not say that incest is negatively perceived only in Europe and America, the first type is rejected everywhere, other two types have been blacklisted in Europe and America precisely because of the exaggerated ideas about consequences of incest, which should affect children. Until the discovery of genetics, the whole world recognized and preferred these marriages. Because Europe and America had the best school systems, people became more familiar with information, other areas received information more slowly, or only country leaders learned about it, and ordinary people did not accept bans on these marriages because they did not understand the meaning.
Religion, Before Judaism, Christianity, Islam and so on. Incest was actually common in some ancient cultures.…
Banning incest is a sensible decision that ensures that humanity does not become extinct. You say that people are probably afraid that children with disabilities will be born to them from incest, this theory exists but is not very well accepted. Why? There was a cannibalistic tribe of Fore people in New Guinea, where its members ate the brains of their dead members until 1960s. Probably as early as 1910, kuru disease (an incurable brain-destroying disease leading to death, incubation is 10 to 50 years) appeared among them. Tribal members blamed black magic for their death, and if Western science did not help them, even more of them would die. Children born from incest can be completely healthy, especially if the parents are not carriers of a genetic disease. It would probably take several generations for problems to start appearing, and if we look at the reaction of the Fore people, then the incestuous families would probably blame the witches rather than genetics. "Weak" incest is present in every society, especially in the villages, there is almost no one who is not blood-related to everyone. I will also mention the issue of parallel and cross cousins. When we talk about incest, we mean relationships that involve only parallel cousins (marriage between the children of two brothers). It is not incest in the true sense of the word when the children of a brother and sister are married - when the future spouses have different surnames. Then they are cross cousins, whose marriages have been frequently used in history (especially by the nobility) until problems with heredity were discovered. I much prefer the sociological rather than the genetic / biological interpretation of the incest taboo. In the traditional community, the man was the ruler of the family and the woman was the mother and ... a prestigious commodity to exchange between families. Marriage has always ensured relationships between families, the growth of their wealth and power. Now imagine that there are five sons in the family and an extremely beautiful sister, if incest were allowed, everyone would be killed or would not benefit from a sister's marriage with brother. Such a family would logically become weaker and smaller and eventually disappear. The only exception is royal families, especially if kings feel that something divine is circulating in their blood what they do not want to lose, then they marry their close relatives. So why does society feel that incest is taboo? First of all, we want the family to provide us with safety and support, we do not want to destroy the family with conflicts. Secondly, there is a theory that a person has a built-in brake for incest in the brain, which is observed in children who were raised together in childhood, they are not sexually attracted to each other. Thirdly, I'm not sure which countries you come from, but at least one of your friend may have been a victim of sexual abuse by an older sibling or another family member. If incest were accepted by society, it would be much more difficult to prove that the relationship between the family members was against the will of one of them. The issue of taboo is very complex, as Meres rightly pointed out. What is taboo is determined by those who have power (most often men), but there are often understandable reasons for its emergence (menstruation taboo - some tribes forbade women from leaving the room at the time of menstruation, on the one hand it looks like abuse, but on the other hand there were not many ways how to effectively catch blood and this solution then makes some sense). So for me, the incest taboo makes sense.
Kdrama Sungkyunkwan Scandal is a plagiarized version of the Cdrama The Butterfly Lovers- A Classic Chinese folk…
I would not talk about plagiarism between Butterfly lovers and k-drama Sungkyunkwan Scandal, because it's more case of intertextuality (references and inteconnection between two similar texts), plagiarism is an exact and non-inventive copy of previous work.
Does anyone know if the statistics at the start of the first episode are real? Curious if they are or not, intriguing
I'm not sure, if their numbers are true, I suppose, that their statistics are little bit simplified for purpose of dramatisation, but... Japan is country traditional with low level of divorces and with only few solutions for victim of domestic violence. There are very abusing relationships of employer to emloyees too, so homicides/murders between family members, friends or colleagues could be quite high.
I'm sure, that these statistics depend on time, global problems, culture and society of country and region, so every country has very unique statistic. There are too much variables (rate of murders calculated per 100,000 inhabitants in country; number of cold cases; equipment of police; severe vs. moderate punisments; available legal ways to get, what potential murderer wants, even without murder; number of terroristic crimes and hate-crimes against people of another beliefs or race too).
You can look on statistics of FBI or you can look for statistics of youre own country (ministry of interior's or police's website should give you answer).
I must be the only one that thought about episode 13 as a disappointment. I mean, I agree that was 10/10 acting…
I get what you mean, yes, it's not the best crime drama, because murderer is quite visible from beginning. Yes, I was suspecting psychiater or bedridden sister at first too... But try to look at this in another way... this alternative closure of cases doesn't fit to message of drama. What wanted writer to say? Abusing crashs children, it makes them ill adults. EH was strange from begining, he was child-like man, old director took his future from him. The demaged life meant for him nothing, the death meant for him the punishment for sinner just as the liberation for sufferer. Evil produces evil. So making murderer of EH is very logical ending of this case. Writer doesn't want to suprise you, she wants to shake you - look, who's greater sinner? Murderer, abuser or society, where law doesn't protect defensless ones?
I Understand what both of you are saying but you guys are missing the point. It literally has NOTHING to do with…
Firstly, she can say something new in next episode, her speech was cliffhanger.
I’m not sure about gender aspects… Some people say, that women have weakness for bad boys and men have weakness for bad girls in stories, I don’t know, how many procentage of population would agree with this statement. But I suppose, that our problém lies somewere else. Which „bad“ attribute of person is acceptable? We are mostly glorifying arrogant, selfish and proud men… but we don’t like weak cowards… Is first group lesser bad then second? I would like to say, that the most famous evil persons wasn’t cowards, but arrogant and proud people in the history (remember „superior“ nations in second world war). But yes, Soo Jung is the most evil character in show. Why? She represents real evil of postmodern society – she’s commutable employee in egocentric society, where everyone wants to live quiet comfortable life with his/her family, so she’s bystander of wrongoing and sinner. Is she doing bad thing in her own perspective? No, she believes – I have never hurt anyone, who did not hurt me first. She’s not written as likable character, she’s coward, selfish, egocentric woman. And, most importadly, she’s victim! She was hurt by people, so she has victim-like thinking now – I’m victim of Bok Soo and whole society, I was great student, but now I’m unappreciated, I can do bad things, because I have to save my career and my family. Her perspective is moraly grey, but acceptable by part of modern society, because we are doing something similar everytime, when we ignore homeless people on street, when we see teasing and pestering and we do nothing with that situation. I suppose, that problem with Soo Jung we have because it’s not drama-like person, she's similar to our enemies, colleges, frends, family members or to us. But selfish coward can be reformed. Moreover, she doesn’t know true, so she thinks, that she has right make "morally grey" decision. The true is going to shake with her world and she‘ll start to change.
I think that this typ of character is quite refresingly realistic and exciting with premise of grow in the future.
Moreover, correction of bad character traits is favourite story theme more than six hundered years, so I don't see any problem with any unlikable FL/ML until his/her catharsis.
Can you recommend some of the japanese adaptations?
Engsub: Oriento Kyuko Satsujin Jiken (2015) Soshite Daremo Inakunatta (2017) Kuroido Goroshi (2018) 4.50 from Paddington (2018) The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side (2018)
Agatha Christie is queen of murder mystery and detective fiction, not thrillers! Why did they choose such overused, uninventive plots for main story? You never know, who done it, until closure in Christie's books, but there was everything transparent. Moreover, there were only few suspicious people in every case and sometimes original murders from books didn't fit into this story, they were so unnecessery. Best part is first half of drama. Japanese adaptations are much better then this series.
That was great, entertaining, meaningful and thought provoking. Yes, it's fantasy/sci-fi thriller, but very realistic allegory of fight against unequality in societies and social (educational) systems too.
this looks so good! btw, are there any other thai drama that are similar to this style. because from what i've…
Maybe Dead Time Stories (2015)? It's horror drama with very movie-like quality of camera, costumes etc., I'm not lover of horrors, so I can't say, if it was good story, but quite interesting.
Hmm, I'm not sure if I want to watch it. I feel uncomfortable watching dramas about the appearance, it's easy…
It's JTBC's show, this broadcast station is famous for their non-shallow (sometimes critic) dramas. You'll find there critical view on objectification of woman by men. I suppose, that there will be messege: You can be ugly or beautiful, but you're pushover or object of men's desires, another words, you're victim in the end. You'll find, that you don't have to change your look, but you have to change your attitude to yourself, you have to get self-esteem to get out of vicious circle.
This is such unique drama, it's feminist, but not black and white so far. Third episode confronts various values and perspectives in context of woman's/man's sexual harassment, but you found out in the end, that such quite simple case is dilemmatic, it's "sexual harassment is bad" vs. "penalty for male perpeator is penalty for his family". Even thought our case is resolved, this problem in more abstract form remains unresolved in society... It's refresh to see male lead with sarcastic worldview and female lead, which is maybe too much idealistic, but she's not incompetent - it's such relieve, I found out, that quite large number of FL in professional dramas are terrible incompetent.
I think, this lakorn is inspired by great american young adult epistolary novel from 1912 - Daddy-Long-Legs written…
I read Daddy-Long-Legs, but I understand your point of view. I wrote my comment after watching 2 or 3 episodes, so yes, there is reallty little similarity now, though I think, that thai novel writer knew this american book.
Yelling and violence, rape, very ill jealousy. Really does viewer believe, that after marriage would be everything…
I watched this series because of my anthropology essay about romantization of rape. I don't like this genre (slap – kiss?), so I didn't enjoy it.
