Not sure why romland99 deleted their post, reposted it and blocked me, but again, it makes very little sense to blame international drama fans here for a very obviously Korean backlash.
The hate is mainly from Korean netizens. Most of the viral tweets with 10-15k likes/quotes are in Korean, and the backlash after the MBC variety show appearance was also from Korean viewers. This wouldn't make headlines like this in Korea if it were primarily instigated by internationals.
Koreans are calling him "tofu face" and all sorts of foul things because he doesn't fit the specifically Korean beauty standards, which may actually be confounding to internationals. Apparently they also think actors like Ryu Jun-yeol and Choi Woo-shik are ugly, which is baffling to this international viewer. So I don't think the logic is there, and the Naver articles also support this.
its not always knetz... I see such comments from international fans too, lets be fair here
The viral tweets are all in Korean, and international fans generally don't watch the variety shows. So no, in this specific case it is definitely mostly knetz.
Seo Kang-jun! Can't wait for this. It'll get like 7.5 on here at best though because MDL people can't handle melodramas, especially not mature and realistic ones with a "toxic" plot like this one. 🤣
(You only need to look above to see how prescient this was 🫣)
I have never seen knetz as unhinged as they are about this ML, really gross. Just because he doesn't fit their idea of the beauty standard for a lead in a romance and he was "awkward" in a variety show.
People here are attacking Jung Hae In just because he kept following Kim Soo Hyun on IG??? What is this K-netz…
It's well-known that they have become close friends after meeting on the set of DP2, and as fellow 88 liners, to the point where they're playing golf together and the like.
You can think it's silly criticism, but you are wrong when you imply they're not actually friends.
Such a beautiful drama, stunning cinematography and VFX. The acting is also top notch. But I do agree with some other comments here that it sort of lacks an emotional hook for me, that which makes you care deeply about how things turn out. They definitely could've fleshed out our central duo more so that the emotional stakes felt higher. Gucheon's trauma and self-blame regarding his mother's death was underbaked and the decision to make him kind of aloof made caring about his fate harder.
I find this is often the case with genre dramas, whether action or thriller or horror. The writing seems more occupied with the set pieces, cool visuals and thrills, with less care given to character depth.
They could've easily did the series without replacing Bong Seok actor imo
How so? Either they would have to rewrite the script so his character is not in it (not easy) or they would've had to postpone filming to after his discharge and then renegotiate with every other cast memeber to find a new filming schedule that worked for everyone (not easy).
The industry has been pushing Kim Jae-won very hard, so I'm not surprised he won this despite his limited acting abilities. Hopefully in the future he can lean on something more than his goofy grin.
