I think the stomach cancer was prob more a cause of the stress she was dealing with at work and they sort of hinted to it with the flashback of her ex and their first meeting bc she was drinking so much coffee on its own which isn’t good. probably she was so focused on surviving pressures and doing well she was neglecting her body which turned into something more serious over time

agree the mom group confuses me as to why they’ve stayed friends all this time. seems like they’re constantly at odds and no real chemistry - it almost feels like they’re friends just for the sake of it not bc they have a real bond or history

Lol of course! one of them will probably need to take a bullet or make some grave sacrifice somehow for the others’ happiness at some point too … they’ll break up just before the series ends even though they don’t want to…maybe their parents will come between them. only for them to come together in the end realizing they can’t be without each other after all. then he or she will probably suddenly need to go to Switzerland for a few years due to some incredible career move/opportunity that’s impossible to pass up of course. it will be hard, but they’ll both choose to live out their dreams happily and then reunite with a long awaited hug …que credits.

great comment! I also found it a relief that they didn’t avoid each other or become too awkward after the confession. the expiration date scene was pretty adorable.

I think it’s nice that they bring the dads perspectives forward so much instead of just the mom group too.

I do find the mom group kind of puzzling though - they all seem to be so at odds with each other and different I wonder how they stayed friends for so long. They haven’t done much to explain their friendship other than they were schoolmates. It seems like there would need to be more than just that to keep them so tight for so long. The surprise bday party scene was really cute though.

I really struggle with the FL mom and her violence. I don’t understand why she’s allowed to just physically assault everyone and explode - or how that’s funny. It feels like domestic violence. And the entire neighborhood knows about it and is okay with it? It’s not just a smack or two here and there - she seriously just assaults and explodes her anger fully on her husband, children, anyone else as she sees fit … and I don’t understand why that’s okay. I feel like she needs to be reported to the police or something, seriously.

The ex fiancé feels really out of place, I agree. hopefully they will resolve and place a little more closure there without dragging it out to much longer between them.

theres a scene in one of the previews where the whole family is sitting down together and the FL mom says something to the effect of ‘we’re a family that shares the harsh, sad moments’ so I feel like you’re right the family is going to be clued in soon and have their moment to reconcile.

I also feel like there is more to the story with the ML parents, that is something I wish they had pulled a tiny bit more closure into this episode but hopefully that will start to arc more next week.

well I guess next week we can expect that her evil twin will suddenly appear bc this is def a soap opera

I wish the second leads would get a little more and I wish that they would resolve some of the parent/family issues if they’re going to give them so much screen time, it feels like there’s a lot of useless filler

Thb, I actually like the family dynamic and complexity of it. I don’t expect only slapstick or heart fluttering moments but the way that things have been going so far it’s much more of a soap opera to me than a romcom. There are plenty of romcoms out there that delve into complex family issues that still balance the fun and humor well. This is more drama and angst than humor and that’s been the case pretty consistently for a few episodes now. That’s all I’m saying, to me it simply doesn’t fit the genre. I have no problem with the subject matter or even the slow pace and nuance.

they’re not stupid at all. the writing is stupid bc they aren’t arcing at all and we’re halfway through the show.

the FL mom needs a serious slap in the face with her selfish pride, and ML parents need to attempt one single conversation.

everyone is having the same fights every episode like a broken record — there’s not even a hint of resolve or growth for the family dynamics yet. It’s fine to be realistic but they should be building to something at least.

This isn’t a melo drama or a family drama so that’s why people are upset. It doesn’t fit the genre of what people expect and why they watch romcoms.

honestly if the writing for the family growth was a little better I’d say it is great too, I think the relatable and realistic family struggles are a good element — it just has to be written appropriately to actually come across and fit the genre. I feel like the writing could be better to do the family storyline real justice without turning it into a melo family drama.

Instead this writing makes me feel like I could just turn off the tv and go through the pain and frustration of observing real life with zero resolve. It’s no worse than being frustrated by observing fictional characters do the same exact thing without any resolve or hint of growth.

Part of why I watch comedies and light upbeat tv shows is to escape real life drama - or at the very least to watch fictional characters resolve things in ways we all secretly hope to be able to resolve things in real life. If I wanted to be strung out with unresolved family drama that’s the genre I would go and watch … or like I said, just wouldn’t watch tv at all.

Time will tell if this gets better or worse with family dynamics but so far I am not impressed.

Case and point, the FLs mom needs to be taken to task HARD. But she’s just free to say and and act however she wants. NO consequences or regard for anyone else and zero … ZERO shame. 8 episodes in and she hasn’t apologized once. She hasn’t even expressed regret for her attitude at all.

that to me is poor writing. It’s true to life but to me it’s frustrating enough to watch people run over their loved ones and get away with murder without consequences in real life. if I go to watch a rom com I’m hoping to watch something that makes me laugh and lightens the mood and if there is a little bit of hard or tender subject for it to get worked through and resolved in a more idealistic fashion.

If this is about helping people see real family dynamics and all the important hard lessons and experiences within that only … that is a different genre. If this is about people observing the humerous side of family dynamics and how we easily get frustrated and miscommunicate but all is well we’re just human and we laugh and resolve our differences well … this is the right genre.

So far I am not seeing the humor. It’s just a lot of pain. That is not what some of us signed up for when we were looking for a lighthearted show to watch. Sure a little sadness and making it relatable is fine and even important, but it shouldn’t be the main consuming theme and it def shouldn’t be stretched out indefinitely … unless it’s a melodrama.

It’s stupid because the writing of it doesn’t fit the genre so far. It’s also not giving any hints of improvement, though only time will tell.

I actually calculated it out and the mains had around 34 minutes of screen time in episode 8 — and that’s me being pretty generous … including 8+ minutes of the family fight about her pursuing her dream and 10+ minutes of the ex visiting the ML office and her hospital visit at the end, etc.

everything else was the parents/family repeating their same old conflicts like a broken record, the exes, and only 10 minutes of the second leads (the only saving grace of this show so far, imo)

I completely forgot about that scene, and I remember now that it really puzzled me bc they really seemed to make a point of it and everything but it never tied into anything else afterwards so I forgot about it

she holds the record for secrets in this show by far I don’t really get her either

at 8 eps it’s not particularly encouraging, so I’m not as enthusiastic about this show as I started, but will keep watching to see how it all pans out and ends. maybe it’ll turn around for the better.

the only happy characters rn are the second leads - everyone else is in drama land with all the ongoing angst and the heartbreak

I don’t mind a little melo or angst in a romcom but for 4 episodes straight on repeat with hardly any legit arcs … seriously.
