I rewatched the two episodes of today, and I had a funny thought about the fight scene between HY and HRF, I felt…
novel same...she meant to do it to show others she's toying with him and he's at her mercy. everyone assume HY is at a disadvantage b/c she's just a girl and a newbie...compare to the skill battle experience HRF. they were thinking HRF will just be a gentleman and let HY down 'gently'. HY's goal is to show everyone he's the one that should be pity on.

Didn't "General" Faux-heng grow up sickly? Wasn't that why he was stuck in a temple and his sister learned…
per novel: HRF is sickly and weak as a child. doctors don't think he will survive to adulthood. the he family being greedy and not wanting to let go the marquis title, switched HRF and HY out at a young age. HRF was sent to the farm estate under HY's title and the family pretty much announced to society or make it known HY is the sickly child.

the He family didn't think it would be complicated and intend to raise HY as a guy throughout her life. when HY ran off to join the army and became a general, HRF got over his sickness and actually survived.

the He family decided to switch them back when HY returns from battle to see the king. that's when they switch back. at court, the real HRF took off his mask.
prior to marrying off HY, HY taught HRF fighting and swordsmanship skills. HRF also need to like/dislike what HY likes when she was the fake HRF as to not give their switch away.

to avoid suspicion, HRF killed off all the generals/comrades that fought besides HY. without the people who fought and know HY during army time, there won't be any comparison of before and after the switch back.

in the novel, they were at the temple. the chancellor gave HRF some kind of life saving medicine to improve his health.

the novel has more details of their coverage and switch back.

XJ in novel is more forward. he's actually the romantic one compare to HY.

they adapted that from the novel. In the novel in order to hide her swordplay she predominantly wields the whip…
man, that's one of the climax of the novel! the duel between HRF and HY was pretty awesome!!! HY's redemption and how she played him like a monkey for all to see. it's a pity to be excluded in the drama adaption.

Novel is more detail but it has some humor to it. You appreciate the plight of the 2 main leads.

Novel waaaaaaay better than drama. Drama changed plot and axed out some characters to fit the 36 episodes.

that's so adorable! Since the scene regarding the 2nd lead complaining about the generals marrying causing a power…
That’s not the novel version at all. CZ only professed his love for HY After he got power/side with the crown prince in place of the chancellor. The drama version is putting a different spin on this plot.

I’m torn about Chu. Is he truly a villain… or just a lost soul shaped by a life without proper guidance? There’s…
the drama didn't explore CZ's background and upbringing

he's just a lost soul brought up in a cold reality.
- father met his mother in small town, promise to marry her before he left to go back to the capital. mother left her family in search of her lover. ended up getting scam/sold to a brothel.
- born out of wedlock/poverty
- born/raised by a mother who ended up in a brothel
- abused, beaten, blame by his crazy mother of their dire state
- mother killed off when Chu family send for him.
- hated by the dad's wife/lady of the Chu manor
- mistreated, abused by the lady of the manor
- only preferred by his dad b/c he is handsome looking/resembles him out of all his sons
- had no choice to but suck up to the chancellor (as a young child of 10-11) and convince him to take in as student so he could be free of his adopted mother's torture/attempted killings
- chancellor groom him to be his successor b/c his daughter is enamored w/ CZ. if the daughter have a change of heart, CZ is replaceable in a heartbeat. however, the daughter is super spoiled, entitled, jealousy rage and basically a rotten person inside. CZ have no choice but to accept her.

he does everything to just survive. he was just on the losing side of the political fight between chancellor and XJ.

Is this true in your home, with your family? What plot do you think should be followed: action, martial arts,…
that's exactly the novel! lol...but drama adaption sometimes sacrifice that that for the sake of entertainment.

if you don't read the novel, you will be less critical of the drama adaption and could enjoy it more haha.

the double was a major bad adaption for sure....a lot does not make sense and the villain princess was given too much screen time and attention. they made her plight on a empathetic level when she was just a super entitled spoiled brat homewrecker b/c of her status.
the other one that was bad was the legend of anle. both of the novels are very good in the character development, story arcs, plots and ending.

Actually that's all subjective matters. Personally, I found that many Cdramas keep staying great from beginning…
ML's family, background and what happened was explained. he was the youngest 6 kids. older brother, 2 sisters, 2 brothers and then him.
all the father and brothers (killed in battle defending the city gates) were killed , beheaded and hung at the entrance gate to the city. the mom and sisters hung themselves to avoid being assaulted/taken alive. he mistakenly survived bc he fainted and was hidden in a closet. it was in his father's study room, he witnessed the murder/death/beheading of his father by his uncle in law. uncle in law set fire to the study and left. he fainted due to the fumes. he was only saved b/c rain came and put out the fire. he woke up to the fate of his family and city ruins. his cousin died (head/body hung at the city gates) in his place b/c they switch clothing and since they look the same, everyone thought he was the last Huo male that was killed, ending that family line.
so b/c of his experience and what he witness, he can't let go the revenge he plotted from the beginning to the massacre of the whole ling family.

for the FL, it's about her growth and how far she came after their engagement was broken off. she went from being illiterate/crude to a refine court lady. she was the demoted queen's most trusted confident and runs her manor. she earned the respect of all the servants from the manor. when she left home to stay w/ the demoted queen, she never came home in the next 5 years.

ML came back after 5 years exile from the border...and when he saw her, he changed his mind about letting her have her peace and marriage. at the time, she was engaged to 2ML. he went into sabotage mode to break off her engagement and then begged for a second chance.

2ML's view on love/marriage was also explained in the novel. he has his own story arc of his family and his aspirations toward the last 1/2 of the novel.

there are minor changes and plot exchanges from novel to drama, but it was still a good adaption. the ending of it was just sort of stupid to me.
