that's so adorable! Since the scene regarding the 2nd lead complaining about the generals marrying causing a power…
That’s not the novel version at all. CZ only professed his love for HY After he got power/side with the crown prince in place of the chancellor. The drama version is putting a different spin on this plot.
I’m torn about Chu. Is he truly a villain… or just a lost soul shaped by a life without proper guidance? There’s…
the drama didn't explore CZ's background and upbringing
he's just a lost soul brought up in a cold reality. - father met his mother in small town, promise to marry her before he left to go back to the capital. mother left her family in search of her lover. ended up getting scam/sold to a brothel. - born out of wedlock/poverty - born/raised by a mother who ended up in a brothel - abused, beaten, blame by his crazy mother of their dire state - mother killed off when Chu family send for him. - hated by the dad's wife/lady of the Chu manor - mistreated, abused by the lady of the manor - only preferred by his dad b/c he is handsome looking/resembles him out of all his sons - had no choice to but suck up to the chancellor (as a young child of 10-11) and convince him to take in as student so he could be free of his adopted mother's torture/attempted killings - chancellor groom him to be his successor b/c his daughter is enamored w/ CZ. if the daughter have a change of heart, CZ is replaceable in a heartbeat. however, the daughter is super spoiled, entitled, jealousy rage and basically a rotten person inside. CZ have no choice but to accept her.
he does everything to just survive. he was just on the losing side of the political fight between chancellor and XJ.
Actually that's all subjective matters. Personally, I found that many Cdramas keep staying great from beginning…
if you don't read the novel, you will be less critical of the drama adaption and could enjoy it more haha.
the double was a major bad adaption for sure....a lot does not make sense and the villain princess was given too much screen time and attention. they made her plight on a empathetic level when she was just a super entitled spoiled brat homewrecker b/c of her status. the other one that was bad was the legend of anle. both of the novels are very good in the character development, story arcs, plots and ending.

ML's family, background and what happened was explained. he was the youngest 6 kids. older brother, 2 sisters, 2 brothers and then him. all the father and brothers (killed in battle defending the city gates) were killed , beheaded and hung at the entrance gate to the city. the mom and sisters hung themselves to avoid being assaulted/taken alive. he mistakenly survived bc he fainted and was hidden in a closet. it was in his father's study room, he witnessed the murder/death/beheading of his father by his uncle in law. uncle in law set fire to the study and left. he fainted due to the fumes. he was only saved b/c rain came and put out the fire. he woke up to the fate of his family and city ruins. his cousin died (head/body hung at the city gates) in his place b/c they switch clothing and since they look the same, everyone thought he was the last Huo male that was killed, ending that family line. so b/c of his experience and what he witness, he can't let go the revenge he plotted from the beginning to the massacre of the whole ling family.
for the FL, it's about her growth and how far she came after their engagement was broken off. she went from being illiterate/crude to a refine court lady. she was the demoted queen's most trusted confident and runs her manor. she earned the respect of all the servants from the manor. when she left home to stay w/ the demoted queen, she never came home in the next 5 years.
ML came back after 5 years exile from the border...and when he saw her, he changed his mind about letting her have her peace and marriage. at the time, she was engaged to 2ML. he went into sabotage mode to break off her engagement and then begged for a second chance.
2ML's view on love/marriage was also explained in the novel. he has his own story arc of his family and his aspirations toward the last 1/2 of the novel.
there are minor changes and plot exchanges from novel to drama, but it was still a good adaption. the ending of it was just sort of stupid to me.
Didn’t she also fake her handwriting in the same scene? I feel like she purposefully was bad at it so he wouldn’t…
yeah, the novel ties the both of them with her first and second life. first life, there's a lot of thing she thought was what it was...but it turns out there was more than meet the eye. in the second life, she found out all the things XJ did for her, which makes her love him even more.
HY was grateful for XJ in her first life, but fell in love w/ him in her second life.
Didn’t she also fake her handwriting in the same scene? I feel like she purposefully was bad at it so he wouldn’t…
her handwriting is decent, and she change certain strokes to not give her away she has a literate education.
she was raised as a 'man' all her life and don't cook or make things...so for her to make the sugar candy basket goes against logic. candy making like that requires training and skills - something she simply don't have. i guess the drama wants to make it that way to make it more memorable or meaningful to their interaction.

the ending was too disney theme haha. the family being there is not part of the novel. it was only her twin brother that was with her. there was a lot that was cut off from the novel. her tang sister and her husband are weaklings/scholars so them being there does not make sense. charging through the village riding a horse and killing the enemies? ummm...ok hahaha... FL was pretty bad ass handling her own matters against Luo QiTong.
per novel, they didn't get married but both was committed to each other. they did made up and got back together. FL was happy with her independence and ML is happy for her and do whatever she wants.
i was soooooo rooting for ML b/c he deserves love after all that he went through.
That's exactly what I've been thinking. And Ying Xiang does so much for him.Poor Ying Xiang
YingXiang was saved from being sold into a brothel by CZ when she was a young girl of 10-12. Her background reminded his upbringing at the brothel with his mother, which is why he saved her. CZ paid for her contract and took her in as a maid/servant and that's all there is to their relationship. She is super loyal and true to CZ. she is pretty much his caretaker and listen/do as told. she is not expressive in emotions b/c it's taboo for servant/master. her role is to serve, not fall in love or make CZ fall in love w/ her. you could say her love is unconditional when it comes to CZ. She is beautiful and know she could charm her way with men to get what she wants. However, the only men immune to her is XJ and CZ. She was utterly frustrated when she tried to seduce/flirt with HY (training camp ground) and was met with failure. YX is not a fighter, bodyguard or skill in swords/martial art in the novel.
YX was given away to the Crown Prince as his bed servant. CZ didn't wanted to, but he was set up by his dad's wife to give her away. YingXiang went willingly and became a spy for CZ.
When Crown Prince found out, he basically tortured her, disfigure her beauty, broken her spirit. By the time the tides has turn and CZ was able to rescue YX, she was reduced to an 'ugly' person (scar stretching diagonally across her face and was laced with medicine to leave a permanent scar). i forgot if she killed herself or aske CZ to kill her off b/c she can't live with an ugly face like that.
it was only after seeing YX like that CZ was regretful. CZ realized too late of YX's effect on him.
if you understand mandarin, you could read long w/ the audio book on youtube. it's one of the best audio book by far that i come across for this novel.
She can’t even paint a bird, but she can make a flower basket out of syrup? The drama writers really didn’t…
the drama is so inconsistent lol
embroidery is a sketch that is more realistic/artsy. Only the super educated could do these sketches. so embroidery matches brush paintings. it makes sense that HY's horse looks like a kindergarten sketch haha.
Didn’t she also fake her handwriting in the same scene? I feel like she purposefully was bad at it so he wouldn’t…
novel: XJ doesn't wear his emotions on his face/expressive...which is why HY is not confident or even have the slightest idea that XJ likes her.
XJ likes HY but doesn't fight or force it. He originally thought HY likes CZ and if that's the case, he will not force it. Their presence bothers him but he doesn't show it. His wingman, Lin XuangHe (drama combo with Cheng LiSu) is the one who kept pushing him to make a move or risk losing out on her. Once he realized he's the moon HY was referring to, he was more proactive...went straight to requesting for marriage lol.
