HD owes everything to his foster father and he respects him. However, his character starts to evolve and influence by LeYan. It’s bc of his love for her that he started to be more of who he is. His foster father came through fo him elevating his status by adopting him into the family in the end. Their father/son relationship is pure and true.
This drama is not like Mulan. FL's aspirations to join the army is for herself, not for her father or the family. This is what makes her a bad ass character!
