I agree with you that they have a "mom/son" vibe but also a "lovers" vibe in a twisted way: Mal Ran is obviously…
Maybe it was just me, but I was pretty sure they slept together, probably more than once.
There's no way she sees Pil Joo as a son. She sees him as her son's protector who she is manipulating by giving him whatever he wants. She just doesn't know that what he wants isn't money, but her demise.
I think it even bothers her that her son considers Pil Joo a friend, because that makes him to important.
She supports Pil Joo, and "raised" him because he's valuable. She's his benefactor, but definitely not his mom. She acts as a caretaker, but it's clear that he has a role he has to play, and that's getting her kid into the power position, and fixing problems when they come up.
She's also attracted to him, and dependent on him, which makes her vulnerable. She's starting to need him more that he needs her. I think his game is letting her keep feeling like she's in control, and that he needs her, so that it's more dramatic when he takes it all away from her.
I actually delayed starting this one because I heard such negative feedback - about it looking cheap, and not being good. Then I saw positive feedback and decided to start it. Now, I can see how it's entertaining, and why folks are still watching, but those complaining had very valid points that I agree with.
We're not going to agree, but these boards aren't for just agreeing.
If I last until the end, this will be a fun one to review.
6 episodes in and I'm really reeled in, there's the antagonist who is clearly messed up in the head but why am…
I actually dropped Stranger, and was thinking of starting that again, or trying this. Stranger was recommended to me by so many, so I am definitely torn. How long would you say it takes to get into this one?
I almost did too. It depends on why you dropped it, but I think it gets a lot better.
I didn't like the couple or the premise initially, and thought the plot would be too annoying and boring to continue watching. I think the more it became about her and the boss getting to know each other (episode 3-4), the more I started to get into it. Now, by episode 5-6, I'm liking their chemistry more, and the story pace is picking up, even though I'm not completely sold on the "jugglers" premise yet.
If you like rom coms, I'd say give it another shot too. I think that part of the show has gotten much stronger.
No, I meant exactly what I said. The acting is bad, as in not believable, as in reading lines in a way that is self aware and almost making fun of itself. From Sharon's angry fits (with bad special efx), to Hae Ra's wide eyed stares, and the dialogue is also pretty bad. More so than in other kdramas where escapism is expected. This is no Charles Dickens... this a B Movie at best. It doesn't mean that they are unprofessional. They are doing their job, but even talented people give bad performances sometimes, or at least not good.
As for the plot. Simple things are not making sense to me. Are you really reacting that casually to someone who killed your parent in a fire? If you met a weird witchy lady years ago who dramatically changed your life would you just hug it out like she's an old classmate? Hae Ra wandered into Sharon's shop after an attempt to commit suicide, and thought it was a drug induced hallucination or dream, but now just picks up clothes there like there's nothing weird going on. It's also impossible for Sharon to have any kind of business in that neighborhood for that long without anyone really noticing she hasn't aged... at all. Who are her customers? Or was she just making clothes for no one hoping her ancient ex would show up eventually? It also bothered me that Baek Hee claimed to finally be aging, but looked exactly the same in her flashback.
The worst part for me is that, although I enjoy the couple, how is it that she just found out that what seems to be her first love, who disappeared years ago without a trace, is the man she's been living with, and her reaction is to run away because she doesn't believe a man could seriously like her because she has a poor complex? Huh? That's it? So far she basically has two expressions... defensive and surprised.
I also like the flashbacks to the past, but it's pretty lazy writing to have this woman basically tell their story in a lecture, like it's a memory, when she comments on parts she couldn't have possibly known about without a spy cam.
That's what I mean by camp. I'm not here to spoil it for folks who like it, but in my opinion this is bad. There are plenty of supernatural dramas that aren't this campy. This is like watching "Troll 2" or "Flowers in the attic" (which I love btw). I've seen much worse, but that doesn't make me think this is good. Entertaining is not the same as quality.
Also, acting is my field FYI, and I've seen a lot of dramas as well.
I like the modern story. But, the previous life story presents his wife as just evil because she got jealous that…
I think she's clearly a narcissistic sociopath from day one. Boon yi is liked by everyone, in spite of her class position, and that's not going to sit well with a narcissist. Everything has to be about Sharon, and when it's not, there's a problem. The sociopath part is that she also has no conscience. That's why she did the things she did without any guilt. She didn't want to kill herself because she felt guilt. She wanted to kill herself because she was alone, and humiliated.
I also agree that the circumstances are sketchy, which makes her character more sympathetic. No one would like their husband sleeping with another woman, even if that was tradition, which was her mentor's issue too. I don't like the implication that their jealousy is inherently evil either. It's a natural reaction. It's the actions they took, based on that jealousy, that are problematic. Stealing babies and setting couples on fire aren't your typical jealous reactions.
I don't personally like that her whole life, for centuries, has been about her being fixated on one dude. That's why narcissism is the only explanation I've got. She's still trying to get back the one thing she never really had. That's not about love, or jealousy. I'm sure the drama will imply that he's her one true love, but to me that makes no sense.
I think the acting, story, direction, basically everything... is pretty bad, but in a campy way, so it's still fun. I can't take any of it seriously at all. It's pretty over the top, as far as the story goes, in an absurd way. The characters actions and reactions are super exaggerated, sometimes laughable. Now, I'm caught up, so the plot makes more sense, but it's still preposterous. Even by KDrama standards.
So that's my idea of bad, but I still find it strangely enjoyable and want to keep watching.
despite the fame of "Introverted Boss" somehow it didn't work for me this has the same theme and I like it a lot…
I know there's an obvious comparison between the two dramas, but I feel like "Introverted Boss" is much darker than this drama is. I definitely struggled with that drama's early episodes, but I struggled more with this one because it's so basic I was initially bored. So far, it seems like I'll have the same experience with this drama, where it eventually wins me over.

Also, that's a whole lot of drama over one dang man. lol.
