King Hu's wuxia films of the 60s and 70s featured some great female action stars. The most famous are probably Cheng Pei-pei and Hsu Feng.

One of my favorite female action stars is Kara Hui, who became popular in the early 80s.

Yes, in the early 80s HK cinema changed a lot, not just HK action cinema but all of HK cinema. 1979 was the beginning of the Hong Kong New Wave. Some of the most important/influential directors of this time period were Ann Hui, Tsui Hark, Allen Fong, and Patrick Tam.

Just a few things to note:1) Embedding official Youtube videos [from TV networks like MangoTV] is perfectly acceptable…
According to Youtube's terms of service, hotpot.tv is NOT allowed to place ads on the same webpage as an embedded Youtube video, but it's ok to have ads on other parts of the website.

https://www.youtube.com/static?template=terms

4D:
You agree not to use the Service for any of the following commercial uses unless you obtain YouTube's prior written approval:
- the sale of advertising, sponsorships, or promotions on any page of an ad-enabled blog or website containing Content delivered via the Service, unless other material not obtained from YouTube appears on the same page and is of sufficient value to be the basis for such sales.

4E:
Prohibited commercial uses do not include:
- showing YouTube videos through the Embeddable Player on an ad-enabled blog or website, subject to the advertising restrictions set forth above in Section 4.D

"HotPot is not earning a penny from them [and they have no ads at the moment]."

They don't make money from video ads, but what about ads on the hotpot.tv website? Is it legal to embed a Youtube video on a webpage with ads, and make money from it? On the website it says "no ads for one week", so I assume there will be ads soon.

We'll look into it! If anyone has other drama requests, you can submit them here: https://help.hotpot.tv/hc/en-us/articles/360025236011-How-do-I-request-a-series-on-Hotpot-TV-…
Is it possible to request more than one drama? I just requested a drama. Then I tried to request a second drama and it says "You've already responded. You can only fill out this form once."

Romance of our Parents used to be on Netflix, but they removed it before I had a chance to watch it. It would be great if you could add it. It's one of the highest rated C-dramas on Douban.

This is good news, but I have a few questions:

For the videos that are not from Youtube, would it be possible to enable shortcut keys for the video player? For example, spacebar to pause, or left/right to go backward or forward 5 seconds.

Are you planning to add more older C-dramas? I'm interested in watching some classics, but nearly all of the dramas in the catalog are recent.

Do you make your own subs? There are several C-dramas I want to watch that haven't been subbed yet, and I'm wondering if it's possible for them to be added.

Thank you for those sugestions I was definitely am going to do Kurosawa, considering Bruce Lee, Sonny Chiba, Jaa…
Setsuko Hara is the most popular classic Japanese actress, thanks to her many collaborations with Ozu (and she also worked with Kurosawa and Naruse).

If you're looking for more HK actors/actresses, I suggest Tony Leung, Chow Yun-Fat, Maggie Cheung, and Leslie Cheung. All of them are very popular and they were in a lot of good movies in the 80s and 90s (I can post a list of favorites for each of them, if you're interested).

If you plan to write about Jackie Chan, I recommend the Youtube video "Jackie Chan - How to Do Action Comedy". It does a good job of explaining his style and why his movies are so good.

Nice article.

Here are my top 10 favorite Toshiro Mifune movies, for anyone who's interested, including a few non-Kurosawa movies.
High and Low
Throne of Blood
Seven Samurai
The Bad Sleep Well
The Sword of Doom
The Life of Oharu
Red Beard
Samurai Rebellion
Rashomon
Sanjuro

If you're looking for more legendary Japanese actors to write articles about, I suggest Tatsuya Nakadai, Takashi Shimura, Setsuko Hara, Hideko Takamine, and Kyoko Kagawa. Nakadai has a very impressive filmography because he worked with many different great directors (Kurosawa, Kobayashi, Naruse, Teshigahara, Okamoto, Gosha).

those were the ones I added to my ptw as well as one cut ill get to them eventually : )
I just watched One Cut of the Dead, and I highly recommend it (especially if you like horror comedies).

Some parts reminded me of "Why Don't You Play In Hell?", so people who like this movie might want to watch that one as well.

I may look into Manji when i get back around to Romance..Next month is fantasy (no time travel) Trying to make…
Here are some of my favorite fantasy movies, excluding time travel, super heroes, and kaiju (and also excluding animation).

Hong Kong:

A Chinese Ghost Story (1987)
One of the main characters is a ghost. It also has spirits and demons.

Eagle Shooting Heroes (1993)
Parody of The Legend of the Condor Heroes. Like many wuxia, various characters have supernatural fighting skills. There are also boots that allow you to fly, and monsters (not giant monsters, so it's not kaiju).

Green Snake (1993)
Spirits and monks, with various magical powers.

A Chinese Odyssey parts 1 & 2 (1995)
Loosely based on Journey to the West. There's a little time travel, but even without the time travel, it's still very much a fantasy movie, so it should be eligible.

Japan:

Ugetsu (1953)
Kwaidan (1964)
Kuroneko (1968)
These three movies all feature ghosts.

Pastoral: To Die in the Country (1974)
I'm not sure if you consider surrealism a type of fantasy, but if you do, then I recommend this one.

House (1977)
A girl and her classmates visit her aunt's house. Lots of supernatural stuff happens.

Here are a few more fantasy movies that I like, but not enough to call them favorites:
Mr. Vampire (1985, Hong Kong)
Rouge (1988, Hong Kong)
After Life (1998, Japan)
Be with You (2004)
Pee Mak (2013, Thailand)

I also recommend the drama, Journey to the West (1986, China).

Fantasy is one of my favorite genres. Should I post fantasy recommendations here, or is there another thread where I should post them?

I liked HIStory 2: Right or Wrong as much as the next person (probably more, since some found the teacher/student…
I finished Long Vacation yesterday, and it's one of the best romance dramas that I've seen.
Old_Anime_Lady Mar 3, 2019
Two of my favorite HK romance movies are missing, In the Mood for Love (2000) and An Autumn’s Tale (1987).

I also want to recommend one of my favorite Japanese romance movies, Manji (1964).

1. Yes, most C-dramas are long, but there are some popular C-dramas in the 20-25 episode range, for example:

School:
A Love So Beautiful (23 episodes)
When We Were Young (24 episodes)
With You (24 episodes)

Historical:
Wu Xin: The Monster Killer (20 episodes)
Princess Pearl (24 episodes)
Journey to the West (1986) (25 episodes)

Other:
Medical Examiner Dr. Qin (20 episodes)
Candle in the Tomb (21 episodes)
Tientsin Mystic (24 episodes)

2. Wuxia stories are about martial artists. They often have superhuman fighting skills (e.g. flying). The stories often have themes of chivalry, and it's common for the villain to be a corrupt official. Wuxia stories are usually (but not always) set in the past.

If you don't want to commit to a long wuxia drama, you can start with movies. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) is a good place to start.

Wuxia is considered a genre because it's popular. Anything popular enough can become a genre. For example, Japan has the samurai genre.

3. If it's a popular drama, there's usually a list of characters (either on Wikipedia or on a blog), so if you forget who someone is, you can look it up.

I'm not sure if I've seen any love triangle dramas, but I've seen some good love triangle movies. I think France makes the best love triangle movies. I recommend Conte d'été (1996), L'ami de mon amie (1987), La maman et la putain (1973), and Jules et Jim (1962).

Was kinda disappointed with Koreeda's last two films - The Third Murder (bored me to death) & Our Little Sister…
You may be happy to know that Burning did well in the critic polls. Film Comment voted it 2nd best film of the year. Sight & Sound voted it 3rd best of the year. IndieWire voted it 3rd best of the year.

Title The Queen's Classroom Spoiler
I've watched 4 episodes, and so far, Maya is a horrible teacher and a horrible person. She claims to be "strict"…
Yes, the tutor is a horrible person too, but I think he's a more interesting horrible person. The way he manipulates people is more believable than Maya, and more entertaining. Maya just annoyed me every time she spoke. The tutor in Kazoku Game goes back and forth between good and evil, and it's always hard to tell what his intentions are. Even when he's evil, he does it in a thought-provoking way.

I felt like The Queen's Classroom was trying to get me to think that Maya was a good teacher, and it felt purposely dishonest. Kazoku Game is more neutral.
