It's set in a small town. After they switch bodies, they try to adjust to life as the opposite gender. Both actors give a convincing performance, and I think the movie does a good job of portraying what life is like as a teenager.
It was directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi. He's most famous for the surreal horror movie House (1977), but he also directed several great coming-of-age movies about teenagers, often containing supernatural elements, for example The Little Girl Who Conquered Time (1983), Lonelyheart (1985), and Chizuko's Younger Sister (1991).
I'm planning to watch Autumn's Concerto and Mars. Autumn's Concerto was made by the same director as On Children, and I liked On Children, so I hope Autumn's Concerto will be just as good.
Are you going to write a follow-up article about dramas released between 1994 and 2003?
Hi I just saw you posted your interest in writing an article about the history of Chinese dramas[MDL Writers]…
Thanks. I'll start writing it soon. I'd prefer to be listed as the main author, but I guess I'll do what you said, if it takes them more than a few months to fix it.
Yes, it's too bad indeed I cannot put older dramas/movies before 2010 or below 8.0 rating. I had to put a limit…
It's tempting, but most of my favorites are movies that I watched a long time ago, which makes it hard to write about them (and I don't really like to rewatch movies).
Most of my favorite crime movies were made before 2010. It's too bad they couldn't be included in this article.
High and Low (1963, Japan) - The best police procedural movie ever made. Directed by Akira Kurosawa. I also recommend 2 other Kurosawa movies, The Bad Sleep Well (1960, Japan) and Stray Dogs (1949, Japan). The Killer (1989, Hong Kong) - The best of the heroic bloodshed genre. Infernal Affairs (2002, Hong Kong) - Probably the best movie about undercover agents. A Brighter Summer Day (1991, Taiwan) - The best Taiwanese movie.
My watched and PTW list are exactly the same size - 43 dramas watched, 43 dramas PTW. The same is true for anime - 89 TV series watched, 89 TV series PTW. They're not always exactly the same size, but they're usually close.
I'm careful about what I add to my PTW list. I only add dramas that I think I have a high probability of liking (based on rating, synopsis, trailer, etc). Occasionally I remove a drama, if I no longer think I'll like it. I'll probably watch most of the dramas on my current PTW list, but I don't think my PTW list will ever be empty, because I keep adding more dramas to it.
This seems a type of cancer that's alarmingly common in ROK - why?Praying for her full recovery🙏
I just googled it. Korea has a very high rate of thyroid cancer, because since 1999 they've had widespread screening for thyroid cancer. The actual rate of thyroid cancer probably isn't much higher than other countries.
I'm not sure about dramas, but there are a lot of anime about ghost/spirit hunting. One of my favorites is Mononoke (but the style is completely different from Ghostbusters, so maybe it's not what you're looking for).
Thanks for the article. I've only seen one of his dramas (Tokyo Love Story), but I'm planning to watch a few more in the future.
Sakamoto Yuji seems to be more popular on Douban than MDL. His dramas have very high Douban ratings. Mother: 9.4 Tokyo Love Story: 9.4 Quartet: 9.1 The Best Divorce: 8.9 A Restaurant with Many Problems: 8.8 Still, Life Goes On: 8.7
I'm not sure about dramas, but there are some Asian western movies.
Japan: Sukiyaki Western Django (2007), Trigun (1998 series and 2010 movie), Broken Down Film (1985) Tampopo (1985) called itself a "ramen western" but it doesn't really have much in common with westerns.
Korea: The Good, the Bad, the Weird (2008), The Warrior's Way (2010)
China: Let the Bullets Fly (2010)
Thailand: Tears of the Black Tiger (2000)
Soviet Union: They had an entire genre of westerns called "osterns". There are too many to list, but the most famous one is probably White Sun of the Desert (1969).
Thank you for this article, I really enjoyed reading it. While Douban's rating has its flaws, to me it is always…
I don't agree that MDL users are more generous with "entertaining" dramas. They just have a different idea of what makes a drama entertaining. If the writing and acting are bad, the drama won't be enjoyable, so Douban users give it a low rating. On the other hand, some MDL users will enjoy any drama with good-looking actors, no matter how bad the writing is.
Journey to the West (1986) is one of the most entertaining dramas that I've seen, with great writing and acting, and Douban users gave it a 9.6. It should've been #2 in the top 10, so I'm not sure why it got left out.

I haven't heard of Sissi before. Which of the 2 versions do you like more?
There are some serious Austrian movies that are well-known abroad, for example several of Michael Haneke's films, and also Toni Erdmann (a German-Austrian co-production).
Dream of the Red Chamber is rated 9.7 as well.Dream of the Red Chamber has been subbed into English, but unfortunately…
The first one only has 9 ratings, so the rating will probably jump from 7.9 to 8.1. The one with 16 ratings will probably jump from 8.4 to 8.5. I'm not sure how often the average rating is updated, but I guess we'll know by tomorrow.

Did you forget to rate Dream of the Red Chamber? I just checked your profile but I don't see it on there. If people give it high ratings, it'll gain more exposure on MDL.
It seems to me some of the difference would just come from being immersed in the country and learning all about…
"I know the most popular drama from my country abroad is the kitschiest, hallmark-level retelling of historic events." If you don't mind me asking, what's the most popular drama from your country?
I think you're correct, the average MDL user is probably younger than the average Douban user, which is probably why youth and high school dramas are more popular on MDL.

I Are You, You Am Me (1982)
It's a coming-of-age comedy about 2 high school students, a boy and a girl, who swap bodies.

Word of Honor has a much higher rating (8.6), but not high enough for the top 10.

It has 2 MDL pages, so I guess they need to be merged.
