I’d say ep 12 is when the ML starts developing a little crush on her.
The ML definitely fell for the FL earlier on.. I think around ep 9 the time she received the red invitation from the scholar is when he started to develop a small crush on her. It's the way he looks at her and smiles when she's around is what gives it away.

Some viewers may say that this cdrama is “dragging out” maybe because we aren’t getting enough romance with the leads. But I think it’ll all be worth the wait. So far the plot of this drama is phenomenal. A slow burn with romantic leads are the best in my opinion. And plus considering the times they were in .. it would’ve been so scandalous if we seen romance before Xu Lanxiang is even a free woman. She’s literally just trying to survive & make sure that her parents can live happily. Any wrong move can cost her to lose her life or end up sold off somewhere. A lil romance is the last thing on her mind.. she doesn’t even notice that Lin Jinqi has his eyes set on her because her brilliance captivated him. That’s what makes this cdrama intriguing because it’s different from what I’m used to watching. We’re just in episodes 12-13 & I think he already fell in love with Xu Lanxiang.
