The marriage decree is opening up old wounds for Lanxiang. The former emperor was the reason why her marriage with Jinqi was severed back then, all because her grandfather stood firmly on his virtue, a choice that sadly led to the tragic demise of her entire family. Fast forward to now, and the new emperor actually holds both of them in high regard. Jinqi for saving his life, and Lanxiang for exposing the Duke’s daughter, for abusing her power.
After everything Lanxiang provides an offering for her family after they hear the news about the emperor’s passing. The scholar reassures her not to worry about her parents and encourages her to get married and have children of her own. Then, immediately following that scene, we transition straight into the official marriage decree. An engagement that was once severed by political strife is now favored and blessed by the new emperor himself.
I completely understand Lanxiang’s deep frustration. Her autonomy is being completely stripped away when all she ever truly wanted was her freedom and to live a happy life with her adoptive parents. So this entire time Jinqi was plotting to get that marriage decree. He knew both families would have never approved. It just seems like no matter which way Lanxiang turns, she simply cannot escape the reality of the Lin family being tied to her destiny.
At least his siblings/cousins support him. He mostly punished too for not being filial , he was setting a dangerous…
They probably never seen him this genuinely happy before considering how his first marriage failed & he tried to make it work .. looking at his prospective he has always had to “listen to grandfather” for the first time he’s leading with his heart

Since they had an exchange of that cup (an indirect kiss) and she was drunk. She kinda gave him a look as if she noticed how handsome he was up close but then she caught herself & looked over at the maids. So you know what I think she does feel a little bit of something but is in her head about it like “nah there’s no way he’s interested… he’s just being kind because I helped the Lin family” this buzz
I noticed at the end of Ep. 22 that Jinqi’s tone of voice completely changed now that Lanxiang had been kidnapped. It’s the way he interrogates that servant guy for a description of the kidnapper. He’s been so soft-spoken and gentle around his future wife, but that dark, intimidating side is coming right back out now that she’s in danger. The sudden switch in his demeanor the second she’s out of his sight is so intense and kinda scary.
Because of all the yearning romance lately, as a viewer I almost forgot that Jinqi is normally a scary, battle-hardened general. He does not play about Lanxiang AT ALL. He will find her even if it means that he’ll go to the ends of the earth to bring her back safely. When mind you … all of these unfortunate events keep happening to this poor girl because he’s so deeply in love with her. Everyone else around them can clearly see how he feels about her, but she is still completely oblivious to it.
