All I care about in a romance drama is spice, fire, angst, passion, kilig. I don't care if a drama is "sweet" or not. Lots of people liked Hidden Love because it was "sweet" but not me. I liked it because it had FIRE in it. So all these reccs are ones that I rated really high because there is a strong element of passion in them, and yet are still well-written

My Fated Boy. Same kind of premise, only in that one it's the ML who is younger. I'm not recc'ing it just because it's age gap and childhood friends love.... it's a really good drama. It's spicy and sweet and well-written. The only thing is you have to be able to tolerate the FL in that one. I really liked her, but some people don't.
Added bonus: I'm like 50% sure that the last kiss scene in that one was a french kiss too, if anybody cares.
I love Richard Li, but this drama to me felt kind of empty. There were some good scenes in it, chemistry-wise. But this plot, just the basic premise, was too good for a mini-drama. Too much of the plot developments that should have been emotionally powerful just weren't, because not enough time and effort was spent fleshing out the story.. The OST was kind of nice. There was nothing bad about the styling and costumes. The colors of the aesthetic were too garish, but it wasn't that bad. I thought the FL was so-so.
A Tale of Love and Loyalty was so much worse in so many respects, but at least it was torrid, passionate, and evoked some emotion, with the actors putting more into their performances, and a plot that didn't bite off more than it could chew.
All in all this drama felt a little bit generic to me, even though it had a lot going for it. It would be nice to see the same plot and same ML, in a full-length drama with better writers and a better budget.
The romance is slow and not really the driving force of the drama. Also, the emperor *does* know what goes on,…
If he knows what's going on, why doesn't he hold that opera singer bitch's feet to the fire for trying to abort (aka murder) his own child. He really finds that shit too tiresome to deal with? They're literally killing eachother. That one chick hung herself. His pregnant woman almost miscarried. They're poisoning and beating eachother.
This guy is a TOTAL ass hole, either that or his EQ is rock bottom.
Then opera chick ingratiates herself to him, and he forgives her just like that. After trying to kill his child. He's supposed to honor his women, but he treats them worse than stable horses. He's an embarrassment as a man. How can he not know or care what's going on with his own loved ones in his own house. How can he rule a country if he can't even rule over his own home.
I think the way it ended alludes the conclusion that they were kind of doomed from the start. Hands of destiny…
This, totally. The FL is in allllllll this mess from ep 1, because she martyrs herself for no reason instead of just expressing her feelings or thoughts to ANYone. She is completely walled off from everyone.
I just cannot figure out why. Except that she must be addicted to the emotional pain.
These stories that rely on "misunderstanding" as the plot's engine are so tedious, because I'm the exact opposite of this kind of person. This misunderstanding is the worst kind, because she's a LIAR. She lies all the time and doesn't even flinch. Then she suffers for her own lies and puts everybody else through all this crap they didn't have to go through.
Her sister's "Last Wish" is so manipulative and underhanded, I would have had noooo problem being like "yeah, no". But this FL's EQ is rock bottom.
The way Ge Yang carries himself and his look has huuuuge David Bowie vibes. I'm not saying he looks just like David Bowie, although he does a bit, espeically in the eyes.... I just think his grace and refinement, his quiet intense charisma, and ability to slide effortlessly between humor and gravity, is very Bowie. He's so freakin hot in Supervisor Husband, wowwwww. I am an instant fan after that show, I'll watch whatever he's the lead in from here out.

This is so creative and awesome. It might seem on first glance like just any cheesy short-length c-drama, but it's a far cry better than most. The plot is re-used and at this point pretty cliche. So if you're going to do a writer-lands-in-her-own-novel drama, you better bring your a-game, and this does.
The FL is well cast. She's not the prettiest, the funniest, or the best onscreen kisser. But she's a well rounded actress doing a great job of holding the drama together with a good grasp of what kind of tone they wanted to strike in the final product. The ML is insanely gorgeous, has a very unique style all his own and really shines in this production. I am an instant fan. He's a good actor and will get better with experience. Supporting actors are well-cast and terrific.
So this drama is really good "camp". It's not easy to make a fun campy show that doesn't go down the drain and turn into something cheesy and cringe. But they did it. I really love the surfer-style electric guitar they use as BGM for ML's opening scenes, it's quite perfect. The screenplay is really great. It's not a masterpiece, but it's not trying to be. It's just trying to be a fun time, and that's what it is. Really fresh and light, funny and fun. Nothing overly ambitious.
