This was an awesome performance by Lusi, but I'm not feelin it with the ML/FL pairing. I don't sense any chemistry and there's something about the way they styled his hair, or idk what. Plot development and pacing are standard cookie-cutter c-drama. They bait you in with the promise of spice and romance, but it's first-half-romance, second-half-plot with not a lot of crossover.
It was funny, fairly light, and Lusi was SO CUTE. This is coming from someone who dropped tiger and rose because I couldn't stand Lusi in it. So I don't have a Lusi bias, but she was really good in this show. I like the acting of many of the minor characters too. FL's dad was great.
I give it a 7. Not enough romance in the romance for my tastes. Not enough chemistry, not enough spicy moments in the back half of the drama. Plot was okay at first, but last 8 episodes were just a complete chore to finish. And towards the end there's some ML on FL female strangulation. Again with this stuff... why do the chinese think it's EVER okay to grab a female by the throat?
What makes it worth watching is the laughs. Lots of good laughs, at least in the first 2 thirds or so. Also, many scenes with rainstorms, and it was so beautiful and gave the drama a lot of atmosphere.

When you're talking about the national psyche and the culture, 90's isn't that long ago in the collective memory. Attitudes of a culture change slowly. Many of their collective cultural attitudes about food and eating stem from these hardships they've been through in relatively recent times, generationally speaking. Which is ehy I give the example of sawdust soup. My gramma experienced hunger in the 1930's and her attitudes about food were passed down as a result to the next 2 generations of kids. Now our attitudes about food are different because times have changed, but when you are raised in this way, there are certain habits or views about food that you don't easily let go of. Like throwing away food. No one raised by my gramma or her kids has an easy time throwing away food, because that's how we were raised. My son has no such problem, he's three generations separate from her. An example of how it can sometimes take nearly 100 years for a family's attitudes to change over time.

8. Christianity is trendy and hip over there the same way in america it's cool and hip and trendy to be a Buddhist. It's just so exotic. I think the way skoreans "do" christianity is equal parts horrifying, hilarious, and cool.
