All the positive comments make me tempted to start this even though it hasn't finished airing yet. I'm psyched since everyone says the story, direction, production and acting are all great so far. Even though I don't want to be stuck in suspense waiting for episodes to drop, I may just have to give in. Plus, Dai in perfect form with chopped locks? Yes please!
can someone explain to me why these short length shows are a thing? and why they dont make it like regular shows?
Short length vertically filmed dramas are easily digestible drama content on-the-go, as they are filmed vertically for viewing on a phone or mobile device. They are filmed in shorter length format for watching in short episodes or stints, but you can also often find them compiled into one full length drama on YouTube/Dailymotion. Many YT or Dailymotion channels take all of the 2-5 minute episodes of a drama and compile them into one larger file, making it more like watching a 2-3 hour long movie.
This style of drama filming has created a new market for highly addictive, binge-worthy content aimed at mobile device users on-the-go. This is the perfect format for drama viewers who want to quickly get immersed in a story without the commitment of watching longer format media. It has also produced opportunities for some excellent, lesser-known actors to gain experience which may aid them in breaking through into the mainstream acting scene.
That said, many of the most popular vertically filmed actors actually have a devoted fanbase and have already been able to branch out into some regular format shorter dramas. Personally, I think that some of the vertically filmed short drama actors have both the appearance and acting skills worthy of being in more mainstream short/long drama content. A few of them may even surpass some of the current mainstream actors in both looks and ability, but that's just my humble opinion. I hope this helps!
The recommendations from @mk002 were on the mark. I absolutely loved The Love of a Fool; both the acting and script were superb! His recent Spring Fever was also well-acted and filmed beautifully, but I'll give a slight warning that those two dramas don't have the happiest of endings. Captive Love from the Mob Boss (a.k.a. Shan Hun Hou Wo Cheng Le Da Lao De Zhang Zhong Zhi Wu) was my first introduction Ma Xiao Yu, and while a bit over-the-top, his obsession with the FL was intense and the story ended well. Hunting Love and Ephemeral Paradise were both enjoyable, and they rated about the same in my book as far as story. You can find the links to watch by searching the Chinese titles on YouTube or the drama names on Dailymotion. There's also a couple of Ma Xiao Yu drama playlists on YouTube. Additionally, other users will often post the viewing links in the comments section on the individual drama pages. Enjoy!
Yaaaaaaas. Another DGZ drama so soon. The trailer looks awesome; I can't wait! Just please, please, please let the story be more coherent than Destiny Switch...
Wow, this was another well-written and well-acted short from MXY. Seriously, these vertical shorts keep getting…
The ending reminded me a lot of "The Love of a Fool." ML really was a total simp for the FL and it cost him his life, just like in "The Love of a Fool." The difference was that in that drama, he gave up his own sense of self/personality in order to stay with the FL. In this one, it would appear that he actually sacrificed himself for love. It's a pity the FL didn't treat him better from the start because he'd clearly had a hard life for which she was partly responsible. He definitely fell for the wrong person at the wrong time and it ended in tragedy. My heart completely broke for his character. Such a good watch though, and once again a fantastic job by MXY!
Wow, this was another well-written and well-acted short from MXY. Seriously, these vertical shorts keep getting better and/or he's been offered some good scripts lately. The acting was superb, the emotions powerful and bittersweet, and the drama flowed very well without feeling choppy. The only problem I had with this one was the ending.
LOL, I couldn't agree more. I mean, of course I had to check it out for DGZ, but seriously? What in holy heck…
Good to see you too! ☺️ I didn't know this one was dropping so soon and I was very excited to watch it because it looked like something different. It seemed like it might be a departure from Dai's previous works which I thought might be a nice change of pace. But like you said, there wasn't much to redeem this drama. At best it could be described as utterly incoherent. That said, a positive might be that Dai has been willing to tackle some unique projects, expanding his scope beyond the romance genre. However, I do sincerely hope that for someone of his caliber that he is presented with much better scripts in the future if he stays within the short drama format. Alternately, I wish he would be offered some decent longer projects because we all know that he would really shine. ✨He's so capable and talented, it's a tragedy to see his ability muddled by something like this silly mess! 🤪
Thank you so much for posting the link! Snatching it now to watch later in case they take it down. Regardless of the ending, I still can't wait. Ma Xiao Yu always delivers!
Another drama is dropping so soon! We're all getting spoiled with the quick turnover of short/vertical dramas. I really hope that excellent actors like Ma Xiao Yu get their break if they want it into longer formats. However, I can't say I'm disappointed that we get to see these awesome actors so frequently!

LOL, I couldn't agree more. I mean, of course I had to check it out for DGZ, but seriously? What in holy heck WAS this? I guess the rogue hair strand turned into an unruly top-tail that somehow sucked all the sense and sanity out of the script leaving nothing behind but a topsy-turvy mess. Nope, just nope!
The ML is on fire in this drama and his personality is something else! Talk about a FLIRT. It was amazing just how he much he was willing to debase himself while pursuing the FL. Whenever he was on screen, you just couldn't look away. Oh, and what a playful, seductive grin he has. This was my first Liang Si Wei drama, and it won't be my last!
