Great drama!! I was hooked from the first episode, I must give a shout out to the fighting scenes, they have been the best I have watched! And the acting is amazing too.

Chinese dramas have stolen my heart ever since I realised what I was looking away from western dramas was starting…
Chinese dramas have stolen my heart too!! They have this kind of charm, specially the costume dramas

I’m glad I’m not the only one going through a kdrama slump!! I tried to watch a few of the dramas you mention in the article but I drop them or force myself to finished them even though I wasn’t enjoying them, and then I went back to Chinese dramas.
As you my first drama was my lovely Kim Sam soon but I go back to 2010, I really like the old kdramas such as goong, coffee prince, lovers, etc; that is why I understand your point about missing the good kisses happy ending without so much drama, but I hope I can like again kdrama since they were my first before introducing me to Jdramas, cdrama and tdrama

I wasn’t expecting so much from this drama but I was wrong. I really liked the writing, ost and cinematography. I can tell they invested a lot in this but everything was great. The acting was also good, I cried so much the last episodes my eyes are all sore but I give this 10/10

Park Eun Bin and all the cast did a great job! The cinematography was also great, unfortunately, there was one point I just wanted to finish the drama maybe I wasn’t in the mood to truly enjoy it.

It’s been a while since I gave a drama 10/10 (I didn’t even give that to my favorites ones) it’s just that this drama is a proof that low budget can be a great drama if directors, writers and all the staff try their best.
This is a well written serie, The director did a great job to show us and make us understand everything with the most simples ways, the characters are well written (yes, Since I met Ning Yi from the rise of phoenixes and Mei Chang Su from NIF I love smart characters) and all the characters were smart, I loved the relationship between both leads (they were so natural ;.; ) and everything was great.
I highly recommend this if you are searching for a great drama!!

I really wanted to like this but I give up after 22 eps… the characters are really interesting and the actors do a great job however the writing is just… bad.

I started off watching kdramas and dipped into cdramas and a sprinkle of jdramas, taiwan dramas and thai dramas…
I feel you! lately I've been watching cdramas because I feel they offer something kdramas don't and to be honest I cannot see myself watching a kdrama very soon

Title Story of Yanxi Palace Spoiler
Wait I have to talk more about this:The scene in the finale episode where Yingluo explains that she won the Emperor's…
When Yingluo told Xia the one to say it first loses I was able to see actually how Yingluo has matured through the years. When she talked about love with the first empress she said love was about letting know the other person about her efforts and if the other person did 50% she should do 30% (and we can see that reflected in her relationship with Fuca when she was young). However with the Emperor she is always trying to win his heart, now she is not doing less than the other person but trying hard and she won't tell her feelings but showed it with actions following what the first Empress did and that's how both women were able to win the emperor's heart except for the fault the empress had to always follow the rules, Yingluo won't make the same mistake.
As for your point, I wouldn't consider it as tricking the emperor heart but she is keeping that spark (if you remember the emperor was moved when his women always did something different from their usual self), so Yingluo knows how his heart works and she wants to be loved in a special way because as they way I see it Yingluo loves to receive attention and care; so I actually find it as a good thing all her efforts. That is how it works in a relationship, keeping the spark and doing little things for the other person.

Title The Rise of Phoenixes Spoiler
I just finished this and Ning Yi is just *chefs kiss* (Chen Kun did an amazing job, such a great actor). Ning…
Spoiler: I kind of accept the ending, I can see Ning Yi being a great emperor and doing so much for his people. About ZhiWei... sigh, poor girl she just wants to love her man but till the end everyone blame her, she also blamed herself but they do not see all the people who pointed them were the ones to cause so much pain and the leads were the ones to pay the price while all they wanted to do was to live a normal life with their loved ones.
And about the emperor, I didn't hate him but he was not a good person either, he didn't mean it since he loves all his children, but he was responsible for all the suffering his kids went through! I could see all the princes only wanted their father's love.

I just finished this and Ning Yi is just *chefs kiss* (Chen Kun did an amazing job, such a great actor). Ning Yi is pridefull, evil, cunning, smart, dramatic and resents the ones who have hurt him or the ones he loved but did he born that way? No, the situation he went through made him like that and there is still love and compassion inside him. I think he is just better than all the characters, he lost everyone he loved but still cared for the people, suffered so much and almost everyone turned their back to him at least once while he remained loyal, I meann, Ning Yi is just an wonderful and well written character. I'm sorry I just felt Ning Yi (Chen Kun) deserves to be praised.
About the other characters and actors, they did a great performance (Nini was amazing!!!! but all of them were actually), the soundtrack, cinematography, the costume and everything was great. However in the last episodes writers added weird things that didnt make sense but I supposed they wanted to add drama, anyway, after ep 20 I was able to get into the story after struggling in the first eps.
I would also like to mention the chemestry between the leads, it was so crazy!!!!! they didn't have a proper kiss however what they had is just enough for me (that scene where Ning Yi just rubs his face to ZhiWei??????????? that sounded so weird lol) but there was so much chemistry I was overwhelmed, they loved each other like crazy, they were best friends and enemies; people kept telling them they were wrong to love each other but they still did and never hide it, sigh... Ning Yi you deserve so much ;;
