Same here, I love how the show portrays Asuka's goals~ She doesn't see herself as giving up anything to become a housewife; for her, it's a fulfilling role she aspires to, thanks to the example her mother set for her. She wants to marry for love and raise children in the manner she was raised, and that's something I can respect. Housewives are often viewed as dependant, uneducated, and unaccomplished--sometimes even lazy (wanting a "life of leisure" versus a career), so this take on it is pretty refreshing! And most importantly, Asuka has people around her who respect her and her views, even if they want different things for themselves.

@Ceki
I agree that being dependant on one spouse for income is a risk, and certainly something I wouldn't personally feel comfortable doing if I were to marry in future. Asuka is a character who is clearly educated and successful at her job but it is still a risk; we can even say that planning to abandon her accomplishments to become a housewife is fanciful of her. (If Asuka's views remain unchanged at the end of the series, I do hope she goes into marriage with some money saved up as a safety net lol~) And for women who choose to be a housewife only to end up divorced, entering or re-entering the workforce after a certain age can be difficult since there is a lot of age discrimination in Japan, especially towards women.
Even so, we can't say that absolutely every woman who wants to become a housewife "can only end up hurt later on," as you claim. Obviously some such marriages end in divorce and unhappiness (I have seen it too) but not all of them do. And for some, it's worth the risk. I believe it's possible for one to have both marriage and career and still provide a caring home for children, given the right circumstances--but for some, this is a challenge. Also bear in mind that in Japan, it's still very common for married men to leave most or all of the cooking and housework to their wives, even in cases where the wife works full-time (ridiculous, I know!)... Considering that, it's understandable that some women in Japan give up their careers when they become wives and mothers.
Yes, Japanese society has seen a lot of change in its attitude towards married women in the workplace but there is still a long way to go. For instance, some employers still demote women or put pressure on them to quit their job when they ask for maternity leave. Many women in Japan put off marriage and children so they can focus on their careers and continue working without that pressure. This is one of the major reasons the birth rate in Japan has been in decline. :/
I respect your opinion, Ceki, and you don't have to like or agree with the goals of the lead character in this drama but I hope you can see that choosing to be a housewife and/or a stay-at-home-mother is not a case of "the wrong choice" versus "the right choice." By that logic, if a woman happily lives out her days after becoming a housewife and stay-at-home-mother, wouldn't that make her choice the "right" one? ;) I agree that the lifestyle choice involves more risk but it's impossible to say that all women who aim to be housewives are doomed to be unhappy and divorced.

Well said! :)
I have the same opinion regarding Asuka's dream. Although it's not necessarily something I would wish for myself, I think it's a woman's (or a man's) prerogative to be a stay-at-home spouse and/or parent, and I really like that this story has been exploring differing views regarding marriage and married life~ Even if I can't personally relate to the female lead's goals, I still feel like I can understand and respect her point of view because the show has done a good job of delving into her thought process and reasoning. I guess it also helps that I have a close friend who is a very happy stay-at-home-mother and wife, so I've seen how it can be a very fulfilling lifestyle for someone. ;)
Ultimately, I feel like this series is about growth and mutual understanding in a relationship... Asuka and Ryu respect one another despite their opposing views on marriage, and I think they have a lot to learn from one another. They have such great chemistry too! I'm curious to see how their views will evolve~
I loved the cinematography in this! Really beautiful costumes as well. I've previously seen 3 different adaptations of this story, and this one was also enjoyable but not quite as satisfying as I had hoped.
Towards the end, we see how Miss Mo was affected by Fan's death but I was also waiting to see that moment of utter humiliation and powerlessness that I remember her counterparts experiencing at the end of both the 1988 film, and even Cruel Intentions (as silly as the latter was lol!)... it's satisfying to see the mastermind publicly shamed, knowing that karma finally came around to bite her in the ass. Instead, this version allows Miss Mo the luxury of breaking down in private... so it seems as though she could continue her manipulating and scheming without consequences after she gets over her private grief.
I haven't read the book so maybe this ending is more true to the source material...? I just find it little bit disappointing; I prefer versions of this story where the character has her reputation and façade ruined (it's only what she deserves, after what she's done...)
Great article!! I relate so much, especially to #1 haha~ I can do without the latest expensive gadgets but if there's some real-world secret to affording a spacious apartment and a bottomless fashionista wardrobe on a tight budget, I'd love for dramaland to let us in on it.
I am already in love with this place really and I have so much energy to do that The prob is my english is not…
I agree, I don't think your level of English will hold you back~ You express yourself quite well! Any small errors can be tweaked by an editor. If you want to write articles, I hope you go for it! :)
Wow, this drama! Both the story and characters were tragic and beautiful... and I can't quite put into words how affecting the acting was. This one will stay with me for a long time. Definitely worth watching!!
I hope we'll soon see a proper trailer for this! I'm so impatient to preview scenes from the movie. (the current "trailer" is more like a fake out lol)
JJBA is one of my top favorite manga series ever, with the Diamond is Unbreakable part being my 2nd favorite part…
Totally agreed! Btw if Diamond is Unbreakable is your second favourite, which part is your #1? I know the anime better than the manga (although I did skip ahead and read Vento Aureo, which I thought was awesome!) and I find it hard to choose an ultimate favourite part~ ^^;;
Super fun!! I loved the pop culture references and nods to other films like Premium Rush, Kill Bill, and Kung…
I could be mistaken but I think it may have been her voice for the English (and sparse Korean) parts of the script! I'm not familiar enough with her voice to say for sure.... But if that is actually the case then the dubbed portions are impressively seamless!
anyone know drama like that? about student-teacher, with dark story?
Although I'm not the one who requested, thanks for the recommendation of Lipstick!! I really enjoyed this drama so I'll check out Lipstick too (if I can find it)~ The premise sounds good, plus it doesn't hurt that it stars a young Hirosue Ryoko. A Secret Love Affair was also a great one in this type of genre, so I second that recommendation! I watched Majo no Jouken a very long time ago but I found the first 1/3 much more enjoyable than the latter portion... still, it does indeed fit the description of a student-teacher romance.
this drama is not my cup of tea but i watched this trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFr7xT8wV24 and it…
Wow that looks a lot more interesting than the preview currently on MDL. And I'm glad to see that my hunch of the male lead being a merman was accurate! I'm not sure I'll like the pace or the length of the show but you're so right that the trailer makes it look worth a try. Thanks for sharing~
I am not a prude but when you feel like you have to close the screen or move to another side of the living room…
This is a late night series and many Jdramas that air in this time slot (after midnight) tend to be mature and risqué--often with sexual themes and partial or suggested nudity. Considering that, the boob grabs etc. in this series aren't unusual or new hehe~ ;)
Did anyone else get a Prison Break feel from the first few minutes? :3 This drama so far is great. Check it out…
Honestly, I can't stop watching this either haha~ I love Ji Sung so, even though I know he's going to break my heart in this, I'm probably going to watch it every week it airs too hehe ;D Not sure about Voice, though...! I'll probably go back to that after it's completed.
Han Ji Hoon~! His tears always get to me. The same goes for Joon Yeong but I feel it even more with Ji Hoon for…
Exactly! There's so much depth to everyone's respective back story, and that must be why it hits us harder in those dramatic scenes... great story and acting!
