I don't find it rush cause it was like the main character is narrating the story....she was just telling their battle in those 3 years it was like she was reading it straight from her diary. I even imagine it done in a movie. I was not biased towards matduoka if i was then i will give the acting department a 10 But I find the acting of the cast natural most of the time and over the top sometimes. The strong point of this drama to me is the story itself, I didn't watch any drama that tackles this situation but I will definitely check those 2 dramas you mentioned. Lastly the music one of the most inspirational music I ever heard and they inserts that at the right moment of the drama.
When I think about it....the setting, the perseverance of the characters, that less cliche father daughter conflict, that epic music, the effect it leaves in me. I still think it is 9.5.
But its good thing that we have different opinion we can't always agree most of the time lol.

This film proves that yakusho koji is the greatest japanese actor alive today. In the film he always wrecks his car, he is the "master car crasher" a brilliant representation of what kind of m*ther**ckr he is....he loves to wreck things his family, other family and his own life. I just cant get the idea of junichi winning best actors in recently japan version of oscars and beating him I dont know if those judges are blind or what. Dont get me wrong junichi portrays his character perfectly and definitely deserved to be nominated but this performance by koji yakuho is one of the best performance is saw in my years of watching movies.
Great performance by youngsters too like komatsu, hashimoto, nikaido, hiroya shimizu, morikawa and takasugi. Im excited to see hiroya shimizu and aoi morikawa in the future those too will become important actors in the future imo. Shimizu is like the younger version of moriyama mirai not becuase how they resemble each other but how similar their acting style is.
I hate that im wrong in my comment below....Satoshi and odagiri are not a detectvie tandem in the show, i hate it that my idea betrayed me LOL. But I love them both here they are both crazy individuals I even understand why they both agree to this role even just a supporting role.
I also love the acting of yoriko's mother here, you can tell the difference with her character during the flashback and during her scenes with yoriko in the flashback she looks like a real person.
