I never read the novel, but I thoroughly enjoyed this, and it is one of our entire family's top 3 historical dramas. We rewatch it every year.
I watched this when it was on Netflix, and it introduced me to Chinese historical dramas; none have surpassed it so far.
The only thing I have is that it's lengthy, and none of them were fillers.

The previous kingdom's emperor's consort was heavily pregnant during the rebellion, and around the same time, the general Gu's wife, Qiu Ming Ying, was also pregnant. Qiu Ming Ying gave birth to twin boys, and the emperor's consort gave birth to a baby girl, who is our Female Lead.

Everyone knew that the emperor's wife was expecting, and most of the royal family members were killed as well. Some of the loyalists of the kingdom wanted to preserve the bloodline and wanted to save the baby. The new emperor's rebels were looking to kill the newborn baby of the fallen kingdom emperor. Their assumption was that it was a baby boy. Qiu Ming Ying husband, who is one of the generals of the fallen kingdom, switches the baby girl with his own newborn son and runs away with his own son. He was creating a distraction and an illusion that he was running away with the emperor's kid.

By this time, the new emperor had already taken the throne and was actively looking for the newborn baby as the baby was a threat. So he sent his son, including our ML, Ning Yi, to find the baby. Ning Yi and his brothers encountered General Gu holding the baby in his hand, and Ning Yi convinced Gu to surrender with the baby. But Ning Yi brother shot Gu, and Gu fell off the cliff while holding the baby. Everyone assumed that the previous emperor's baby fell off the cliff and died along with Gu. Initially I was little upset that she never mentioned her husband. But thinking back I also would have said the same thing. Her answer was practical. Her daughter and her parents had no one to rely on except her. But for JinQi, he has big family to lean on when things go wrong.

Even though I love my husband to death, when I got sick severely once, all I was thinking was that I should pull through for the sake of my kids.

So her reply really moved me and was so realistic.

She never apologized but she realized her daughter-in-law is up to no good and never took her words seriously and learned to respect Xu Lan Xiang decisions.

That was one of my favorite part. It flowed seamlessly.
