I read somewhere this is the re-make of the korean drama "Giant" It does seems to have the same basic story line…
They mostly adapted it into a Shanghai in the Republican Era setting and context. The basic core of the characters, motives, plotlines are all here. I love Giant as well and I'm really liking this adaptation too.
Once again, this was amazing. The work you put in this, the amazing analysis, it could be a whole blog! Thank you. I genuinely believe this series of articles are among the best we have on mdl :)
The TV version has 43 episodes, while the DVD one has 40 (the one uploaded on youtube). I've submitted a change to 40 episodes but I'm posting this for anyone who might be confused.
It's heartbreaking, unsettling, revolting but it has so many beautiful and well written moments, you feel it was worth a watch. Not to be watched casually, but to reflect about each episode and each character. A gem.
If you're used to weekend dramas/makjang stuff this is pretty standard and easy to watch. I think the beginning and now the final episodes require a bit more of patience because the pacing is slower but it's not a total awful watch. Really does depend on how you feel about the genre, if you're into screaming ahjummas, jealous villains, long running plots.
Spoilers:
He dies during episode 19.
Hopefully they'll manage to pick it up so the subbing can be finished.
