You Jung is a treat so far. I’m still on episode 1. But seeing her all sprightly with an effortless flowy performance while she moves from scene to scene with that charm of a rugged street smart gal keeps a smile on my face as I watch this show.
She’s so young still. I haven’t enjoyed her recent performances but I understand why she made those script choices. So yeah so far so good.
I like the production quality. I understand that AI is heavily used. But still I don’t think it dissuades one from watching this show.
I wish time was not wasted on the concubine and her side quests, the lady of the tobacco business (concubine’s mom). I mean a lot of precious time was wasted where it could’ve been spent on the machinations of Yejin’s character.
And then there is Chang Wook. He does it right. He nails the feel of his character. I wish he had more to deal with. But he still does it just right. So yeah I’ll give it a 7. It’s a good one. But not a re-watch type good.
I finally was able to finish this rather short one (8 episodes only - which totally is up my alley).
Now before I say the good stuff I wanna say the stuff that needs to be said. It is underwhelming AF!!!! the source material gives you so much, yet every iteration that comes out of Korea that sees Dangerous Liasons as its inpspiration just misses the damn thing. It’s not just about sex. It’s not just about a love triangle, or yearning or forbidden love. More than that it’s about jealousy, desire and a Machiavellian urge to be seen as the one in control.
Yejin’s character could have been much better written. Could have more to it. I think she was given far less to work with. And that’s why she comes across as a tepid accessory. The only time I was reminded that Yejin is a seasoned, decorated actress was in the last episode. Sad to see such an actor either reach for such a safe project or be given one. Who knows who decided that her character will have no meat on its bones.
Nana’s character is supposed to be this nubile, ingenue. The center of desire for the male antagonist. She reminds him of innocent days. Of purity of intentions. Nana is not a believable casting for this role. And that lip filler was like a …it was visual torture. Her performance was inconsistent in its believability. Sometimes I bought it. Sometimes it looked feigned. But she did give us good moments in episode 8. (Continued in part 2)
I finally got around to resuming my watch of this show. I’m still not finished but … I have to say this. No matter how dull and banal this whole show has proven to be (I’m on episode 6) nothing can take away from the nuance and subtleties Ji Chang Wook has captured of his character in the silent (non dialogue) moments of the show. The colors of his yearning, sleaze, machinations appear on his face as lightly and fade just as smoothly like clouds. His performance so far is beautiful. A little OTT only when it has to be. But mostly in those moments of solitude or in moments when he’s 1:1 with a screen partner, his restraint and dilemma is sublime to watch. 🤌🏻

He is not doing it for his own gain. He has a family to look after. He has to keep the little influence he has gained to protect his family. His brother was a criminal, he had to meet his end. Better him than someone else mauling his brother in the game of thrones. He has to live with the burden of his choices that became his fate because of his brother. He never chose it. He regretted involving his brother in that accident that happened. Kitae saw that his younger brother still carried that burden from that ill fated day when he asked him for his help to cover up a crime. I think that was the last time Kihyun stepped a toe out of line. Until now.
The series had a completely realistic ending, but the character Gi-hyeon still remained ambiguous to me. Why was…
He was the most morally clear one in my opinion. He made a choice for his family. Everytime he made a choice and lived with it. He saw his brother do a drug deal 9 years ago and chose to look away. He stuck to it. He chose to not support his brother’s agenda and stuck with it. He was given the option to protect his sister and niece, their only chance to survive as a family. He made the hard choice and stuck with it. His pain and suffering in the last scene with his brother is sooooo obvious. He didn’t take out his firearm and point it at Kitae first. At first Kitae held him at gunpoint. When he realised it’s his brother he put down his gun. And then Kihyun took out his gun from his holster. It was almost as if he waited for his older brotjer to pull the trigger. As if he preferred dying by his hand while fulfilling the orders. But when Kitae point his gun away he knew he had only once choice. Survival as a family. Let’s not forget, Kihyun didn’t do it for himself. He did it for his sister and niece who he will now have to take care of like a daughter. He did it for them. And he will suffer internally for them now. Cos the burden of his decision is his alone to carry.
Heheehehe your 12 year old sensibilities. Adorable 😘 you’re easily tickled. Growing a thicker skin helps. But minding your business helps even better. Imposing your low IQ on people online can get you into a stiff spot. Learn not to think that the internet is your kiddie playground. Like you did here. Cos not everyone is gonna take it. Someone is gonna show you the can. Someone who cares a lot.

In any case, there areNGOs as well like NAACP and ACLU you can get in touch with. But legal frameworks apply. Investigative reporters are all corrupt unless they are independent like the guys at drop site. So if you don’t have money and connections you’re screwed when it comes to IJs. I mean nowadays even the Guardian is corrupt and not truly independent. You need to work with truly independent journalists. Daily Beast is truly independent. But they have an agenda and they stick to it.
Trust me - when you are on location in a place where you don’t require that much brain power - you have time enough to straighten out some wankers. I’m a disciple of Fran Lebowitz. I don’t pick fights and grudges but I tend to the ones imposed upon me with care and attention. I’m thinking of locking time in my calendar to address your developmental needs. So don’t worry about me and my time and my availability. I’m making time now while being swamped. I’m gonna keep making time till your developmental needs are met. Well I’m overworked and living in a suitcase and have been away from my own home space for a while. I am in one of the most beautiful places on earth right now and in great company of people and professionals and creatives. So no, I am not lonely and/or needy. Nor do I lack interactions. I definitely don’t need it from a 12 year old low IQ Betelgeuser, you know. God forbid that one. You can take that offer in your peer group of unemployed wankers, love 😘 so thanks, but no thanks
