Let me remind you before, so theres will be a breakup/separate moments and scenes wheres the ML got push away and FL refuse him in the novel theres will be 3/4 attempt of the ML to persuade FL to stay by his side with him but because their sect is enemy for decades FL is from righteous sect and ML is the leader of the Demon sect, FL has to push him away and she afraid her hometown luoying valley accused of colluding with the Demon sect and FL elders from the righteous sect and her parents not allowed her to have relationship with the ML but don't worry our ML is a tough guy and loverboy who's only love FL and wanted to married FL, he is obsessive and possessive towards her and he prefer be killed by the FL if FL feel annoyed by him, he keep pursuing her until the end (lucikly FL is not ruthless like him). So in the future the ML begin pursuing her and not let her end up with another man until he got her in the end. (That's from the novel).

It's okay if you feels that way this is all because of the fast paced and many cut scenes from the drama that's why turn out a little different and to fast for the dynamic for the main leads relationship. In the novel he's already fallen first for her when she help him and rescue him from the bullies and cares for him and gives him what he needs and after that many events happens that not shown in the drama and being cut, and then theres a scene wheres same like in the novel when he's getting stab by the FL to let him calm for his madness, so basically she is his ray of lights in his miserable and dark life and the one that make ML feels emotions. He already wanted to protect her and help her matters in chap 25-42 in the novel. His feeling is genuine but because of the director purposely misguide us to think that he's only using her and then fall afterward, but you can see his real feelings in episodes 9 in the drama. The FL already suspect him in the early episodes but turns out all of that suspected is turn out false. His love towards her is sincere and he has his own way to attract, pursue, and get her by his side. He's not just a manipulator for his purpose and goals only, he's using his scheming act and cunning moves to get her by his side and to get her only for him too haha he is really lovesick man.

Yeah he fell in love first because FL cares and protect him and gives him what he needs when he's still recovery from the poison when he still in the qingque sect (righteous sect) that's why he begin to feel emotions and FL became his ray of lights in his darkness and miserable life it's like slow burn romance at first chapter, this chapter begin to see he cares for the FL in chap 5-12 in novel he begin to rely and wanted to stick with the FL all along. And begin to jealous and cares and help FL with her matters in chap 25-42

Don't worry she will help ML and help him accomplish his goals like he did to her, and theres iconic episodes from the trailer when the ML almost being cripple by FL elders and she saves him from them.

Theres many cut scenes and different and modification of the story because the history and story about the righteous sect and demon sect not entirely specific explanation in the dramas and many history being cut and not shown, But the iconic and ML goals and his sincere love towards FL is still in the line like in the novel he's still a loser in love and downbad for her. If i can calculate this into number maybe it's 65/70% percent still in the line for the plot of the story, for the romance the similarities is 90%. Nice theory guyss, can i give you a spoiler ? in the novel the man who traveled together with Ping Shu is Mu Zhengyang the twin of Mu Zhengming and you guys right because of Zhengyang greediness and ambitions to claim his goals he doing extreme act that caused him betrayed Ping Shu that's why their love story is tragic, eventhough he died in the hands of Ping shu and realize what have he done to her too latee and end up death
