Just re-watched this for the 3rd or 4th time. The movie still doesn't get any better no matter how many times…
i didnt read the manga but i heard it happen in ... Volume 3 of the June Drama CD lol

This old Jdrama was adapted from the original novel that is currently at 54 volume. It makes me wonder about the…
During a free talk segment of the June audio drama, the author said she imagined herself as Morimura - this makes me wonder if the rape scene and its repercussions are a way to process some trauma on her part.

Also, her statement reminds me that the target audience of Japanese BL novels (at least during Fujimi era) are typically (straight) women. BL was not originally meant for LGBT+ folks, though I see some trying to claim Yoneda's work (Saezuru).

And, when Morimura's voice actor (Okiayu Ryoutaro) asked her how she came out with Tonoin's monologue since she only saw herself as Morimura, she came up with what I think is a very Japanese answer: Tonoin-gokko (translation: By playing pretend I am Tonoin).
On Fujimi Orchestra Aug 4, 2025
Of course there is the rape and right at the beginning too, this is a BL serial novel started in the 1990s (and amazingly it is still on going). I decided to give the live action a try because I enjoyed the CD (audio) drama so much. There are a total of 14 volumes and this live action actually only covers Volume 1.

I think this live action is just a missed opportunity and a bunch of what-ifs. What if they had cast someone who can actually act for Morimura's role? What if they wrote the lines to better reflect Morimura's trauma and Tono'in's regret?

The only good things about this live action are the extras (Kinoshita Houka playing the yutaka-clad double-bassist , the clarinet guy and Ishida the cafe proprietor).

Tono'in's actor is only so-so but with such an awful actor such as Takasaki beside him his acting skills seem better than they really are. I am just amazed that Takasaki is still acting today. He is just worse than awful. It's like watching a gold fish masquerading as a human.

Is there bromance?
no, despite inukai playing the support character here

Boring and I stopped caring about the characters by episode 6. I only watched until the end in appreciation of the me 10 years ago who made the effort to download it from bittorrent. (I still wonder why I downloaded this though. I am not a fan of any of the younger actors and the story is not really my type after all. I am glad 2 of the 3 main actors/actresses are not active anymore.)

Gave it one star for Miura Tomokazu,

I could not find season 1 so I started with season 2. The premise did not sound convincing but I was hooked by the humor within the first 15 minutes. I guess you would know whether you will like it or not within the first half of the first episode, so I say it's worth giving a try at least.

If I have to describe it in one sentence: detective (Sherlock like MC but much more likeable) and police procedural set in Tokugawa era.
On A Restaurant with Many Problems May 3, 2025
This drama addresses an important issue (sexual harassment and how Japanese society "deals" with it, e.g. blame the victim). However, I can't stand the 2 characters that are supposed to be foils of each other: the Todai virgin and the flirt. I wonder if it's because I see the younger version of myself in both of them. Also, like what another commenter wrote, Tanaka's character is a bit unreal.

At least, one thing I can agree with many others, Chika is great!

Finally, I had to look again to make sure I did not misread this part: Fuji TV made this drama. lol the irony.

I watched the Yamapi version and I must say that I enjoy Hirano's acting much much more - he reminded me of another talented actor, Ichihara Hayato. It also helps that I was never a fangirl of Yamapi and his non-existing acting skills lol

And this is weird, Yamamoto Koji being in the 2022 version when the actress he stalked into marrying him was in the 2006 version....

I gave it a 9.5/10, don't be fooled by the rating, I have a feeling many J-Dramas are review-bombed for nefarious…
it does not matter to those like me who only watch J-Dramas because of time and interest, but from looking at the ratings of K-Dramas, all you need to do is adjust by adding 1 star to the J-Drama. An 8 star J drama is equivalent to a 9 star K drama, etc. In my field of work it is called calibration.

Bushido: Way of Bullshit

https://www.tofugu.com/japan/bushido/

Sorry, I just cant take this seriously. I was hoping they would reveal that the Bushido thing is a lie, and they never did.

I managed to finish this because of Sasaki Kuronosuke. I thought it was bad enough that I had to put up with Nanao AND that Hirose, but Nanao actually turned out to be tolerable. That Hirose plays the usual shouty brat. I will blacklist anything she has significant screen time in from now on.....
On Like a Dragon: Yakuza Feb 10, 2025
it has Japanese speaking actors (most of the time). the setting is the Japanese underworld, based on a Japanese video game.

but, as someone who has watched Japanese drama since 1990-something, sorry, this is not Japanese drama.

this farce (and most of the stuff from Amazon or Netflix) is Hollywood, an white boy's idea of how Japanese drama should look or sound like.

You know how old people tremble for no reason? He had that! BUT I feel your post may explain some of my discomfort…
I dont see him as attractive but on a whim I googled his younger pictures. He was really a looker back then (to me). Guess he is one of the unfortunate Japanese men who look their age (or older)

annoying FL.... I continued to watch only thanks to the supporting actors such as Nagayama Kento and Matsushige Yutaka....

I continued watching because of the three good looking policemen (Aoki, Hira, Koyanagi) and also in the twisted hope that the FL's father would turn out to be more rotten than he appeared to be. One out of two ain't bad. (And lol can I say again I really envy the FL for being surrounded by hunks at work)

I am lifelong J-drama fan (from my teens to my fifties, still going strong) who flirted with K-drama for a while (early 2000s, I think). I no longer watch K-drama, but still watch at least one episode of a J-drama in the spare hour I have every evening.

And yes, rom-com (unless it is BL with high production quality like Ossan's Love) are just not my cup of tea, whatever the language they are in or which country they are from. There is something about hetero relationships (no matter how untypical) that does not sit well with me.

My fav genres are historical (Taiga), crime/thriller and job doramas. I listen to BL CD Drama and read the novels but I find most japanese life action BL Drama simply cringe worthy.
On Cafe Funiculi Funicula May 27, 2024
nice story, but the actor playing the FL ruined it for me. I can't stand her acting, which would have perfect had she been playing a... cat. What's that slow blinking for? I find it so annoying.
