You should definitely watch LP to understand better. There are many small details about the story except flashbacks.
Yes it is sad ending but mostly Fugui’s story and some characters are related with LP. Not watching doesn’t lose anything but watching it makes this drama more meaningful and enjoyable.
In ep 2 , Bamboo Pavilion by River Huai that Fugui asked Qing Tong to weave is the place Huaizhu (his mom) and Hongye meet. 😭
In ep 3 , Fugui loves watching the sunset just like his parents.Omg he is really their kid😭
After I watched LP , this drama is more meaningful to me. I liked the Hongye and Fugui’s portrayals of characters till now. I hope they don’t change this.

Poor Fugui doesn’t know how his father loved his mother and still only love her. He has no clue about that this “soldier” project is actually his mom ‘s plan. He has no idea about his mom’s evil relatives. Hongye chose to be a bad father not to ruin Fugui’s love for his mom. Watching these two really breaks my heart 💔😭
Hongye thinks that he was weak before and all of his friends died because of this weakness. He feels guilty. He doesn’t want that his son does the same mistake. Cuz he knows how it feels losing loved ones. He thinks a son’s love for his father will be burden to son and he sacrifices his love for his son to make him stronger.
I don’t approve his method but he has some points while Black Fox is still there to destroy them. Father and son are both in pain but I can’t blame anyone for this. 😭
Side note : Hongye is the same Hongye. He keeps all his pain and his tragic memories to himself not to burden to his loved ones like he did before. He hurts others but he hurts himself the most.

Last people Hongye cared about are not alive now although no matter what he did. What is he supposed to do while he has a curse of losing?
Plus , it is not only about a family.It is about all realms’ future. Even Fugui’s mom sacrificed herself for it. What was Hongye going to do ? I know Fugui needs his father but Hongye’s sister and even his own father died for this aim. What was he supposed to think ?
Side note : To understand how Hongye is like as a father , you can check his scenes with his sister. It is not about revenge , hate or sth else. It was a choice and he chose it.

In human realm , there is an alliance that all strong families are part of and these people claim that they try to protect humans but that is a big lie 😂
Wanquan Hongye is also part of this group but he also knows that these people are useless so he creates a mask group from younger generation like him. This group tries to stop the conflict between human and demon realm.HongYe meets with Dongfang Huaizhu in one of the cases. Huaizhu sees him with his mask , doesn’t know his identity. They fall in love at first sight and promise to meet again on 7th day of 7th month in a pavilion. They meet , talk and walk together. They plan another date in the same place but before their date, they meet again. This time Huaizhu is there to kill HongYe without knowing his identity because of her friend’s benefit. They fight, talk etc. They have good moments but at the end of the day , Huaizhu doesn’t kill him but doesn’t trust him either. She even doesn’t want to see his face because of a tragedy.
Later , Hongye decides to explain his identity although Huaizhu doesn’t want to see him. He goes their planned date with his mask , explains his identity but Huaizhu disappoints, says that she doesn’t want see him again and leaves.
Later, Hongye wakes a demon up because of Black Fox and this demon wants to use Huaizhu as a vessel for his lover and kidnaps her to the future. Hongye learns and follows her. Demon turns Huaizhu into an evil thing. She doesn’t remember anything or anyone else. In future , Hongye also learns that all masked members die tragically including him and doesn’t exist in future. Only one person is alive.

Mmm not exactly. There is clan of spider demons. (Sorry I forgot their name.) Nangong family from Yiqi alliance kill them at the beginning. It is just my guess but Qing Tong is from this clan not a fox. Black Fox takes her powers from a hatred tree and she is not related with other clans including Qing Tong’s.
To sum up ,there are good demons and good people in the drama.There are also bad demons and bad people too. Qing Tong and Fugui belong to first group while Black Fox and Nangong family belong to second group.
