I don't know why I was never drawn to this drama (sometimes our minds work in strange ways) notwithstanding the fact that Yamapi is in it (and I am a big fan) and it got such good ratings (including yours which is particularly important for me). I can't even promise myself I will watch it in the future, however...never say never. Your review has certainly sparked a little more curiosity in me so thanks for writing it. ;)
Hi, the subs for Episode 2 are totally out of sync. in most of the streaming sites I am using currently. Does anyone know of a site where they are shown correctly? Thanks for your help. <3
Thanks for this article. I have to say that I started my long drama watching adventure (now ongoing for 3 years) thanks to Jdramas. For about a year I stuck only to Jdramas without wanting to try watching any other Asian drama as I was pretty satisfied with watching all the oldies and some currently airing ones until one day I decided to try watching a Kdrama out of curiosity and there was no turning back.
Now and again I still watch some Jdramas and I agree with what you wrote about their very distinctive traits which make them unique and outstanding. However lately I have watched less Jdramas as I am not so interested in their genres which are mostly thriller/detective, medical or school topics. I am only enjoying their Asadoras which have original and interesting story lines.
This drama was really awesome from start to finish. I thought the story was extremely interesting and very well written and acted by all the cast. Every incident was full of suspense and it was always impossible to know how it would end until the very last minute. The final two episodes were particularly daunting but epic at the same time. It was one of the rare times that I strangely didn't hate the villain even though he committed many crimes but could somehow understand his motives whilst not approving his actions. I will miss the Negotiation Team very much indeed. This is another brilliant drama of 2016.
I thought this drama was unique and very original mostly because of its plot and the way it was developed. In fact although it was unrealistic, the writers managed to make it believable and fun. The comedy here was really brilliant especially in the first half of the drama and on the whole it was a pleasant and relaxing watch. I had never seen Rain before and I appreciated his acting skills here as well as those of Oh Yeon So and will keep an eye out for their future projects.
There are many contrasting opinions about this drama which is probably due to the fact that it got a lot of hype. I personally enjoyed it very much as I never watch a drama with high expectations especially plot-wise.
The aspects that I enjoyed most here were the great relationships amongst all the different groups of people, the wonderful settings in Greece, the great OST and of course the romance. Yes there was also a lot of eye candy here but in my case it was not the only reason why I enjoyed it so much as this would not be enough to keep me interested for 16 episodes.
I also personally thought that the key point of this drama was well represented which involved the difficulties/dangers of being soldiers/doctors in war influenced areas and how relationships can be greatly affected by these difficulties. I felt worry, pain, sadness, warmth, happiness and delight whilst watching it which is more than enough that I can get from a drama.
This was another amazing drama for me. The feature that I appreciated most was the fact that the female lead pursued a medical career whilst facing so many hardships mostly because she was a woman and being therefore very discriminated at that time.
The romance part of this drama was also very poetic as it was about a deep, respectful and impossible love which was represented extremely well by the two leads who many times could show their feelings simply through the expressions on their faces and eyes.
There was also a lot of the typical scheming here however it didn't ruin the beauty and originality of this story for me. I will probably watch this again in the future as it was really charming.
Thanks for this interesting article. I also love classical music in dramas and of the ones you listed I have seen Tomorrow's Cantabile, Secret Love Affair and Beethoven Virus. Out of these my favourite is definitely Beethoven Virus as I found the story original even if a little similar to the Japanese Nodame Cantabile which is the very best drama about classical music of all times in my opinion.
What an enjoyable article, thanks for writing it. Yes I also prefer the good main leads versus the arrogant and self centred main leads. All the ones you mentioned here definitely deserve to be in this list (I admit I haven't seen Pinocchio and In Time with You but the main leads sound just as adorable). My favourite one was Dr. Lee of D-Day simply because he litterally even forgot to eat or drink in order to save people and risked his life a few times therefore was truly heroic to my eyes.
This is another fantastic saeguk which I absolutely enjoyed until the very end. I have to say that I am biased towards science and astronomy therefore I found it particularly fascinating as I had no idea that Korea had such an amazing past in scientific studies.
The story starts a little slow and it is hard to get past the first introductory episodes but after that it really takes off and it is absolutely fascinating to follow the very contrasted and difficult life of this talented scientist.
I had never seen Song Il Gook before and I thought he was absolutely flawless in his main role so I will keep an eye out for his other projects. This drama is highly recommended to saeguk/science lovers like myself.
Thanks for writing this article as I am always bothered by these stereotypes myself. As much as I love Korea and Korean dramas personally I think I would have a really hard time in living there myself if all these stereotypes were true also in real life (I am assuming there is always an exaggeration in fiction writing). Another stereotype I find in Asian dramas in general is the age issue...apparently already when in their 30ies, in Korea for example, women are addressed as Ahjummas, meaning old ladies... really? Wow...
Hi what a fun article, thanks for writing it. My all time favourite kiss remains the famous one in Coffe Prince, but I agree that also all the others listed here are great and warm kisses.
What an amazing saeguk!! I agree with everyone who said that this is one of the best saeguks of recent years (the last 10 I gave to a saeguk was to Secret Door of 2014). Everything here was perfect, the writing, the acting, the settings and the OST. It was also very informative for me for what concerns this particular time period of Korean history. I highly recommend it also to those who don't regularly watch saeguks.
The reason why I decided to watch this drama was because it had many of the cast of Nirvana in Fire. I have to say that I wasn't disappointed infact I enjoyed this more. The main reason is that I enjoyed and appreciated the plot from start to finish whereas with Nirvana I only enjoyed the second half.
There were some really clever moments also in this drama, maybe not as sophisticated as in Nirvana but still very enjoyable nonetheless.
I really appreciated the relationships within the Ming family and my favourite character was by far Ming Lou who was witty, clever and very ironic most of the time and also the most complicated character of the whole drama.
I had already noticed and appreciated Jin Dong in Nirvana but his character there was shown only in a few episodes whereas in this drama he was totally stealing the scene.
On the whole I never got bored and it was a very pleasant watch for me. :)
I only missed The Lover out of all of these. I enjoyed all of the others but my all time favourite remains Coffee Prince which I never get tired of rewatching. :)
When I started watching this drama I had high expectations as I am a big fan of both the main leads. Unfortunately after the first few episodes it became quite obvious to me that this would be a typical romcom with too many clichès.
I could see the attempt to deal with a new subject like divorcees starting a new life but the end result was nothing to write home about.
Also the friendship ties between the four friends was very likely a quotation from Sex and the City but again it lacked the quirkiness and uniqueness of the original four ladies.
By the end the story really started dragging with nothing going on except pushing and pulling of the lead couple. I will give it a 6 only because it had some funny parts at the beginning.
